We have received the following information regarding this event;
Internationally-renowned Dartington International Summer School & Festival has released the course programme for its 70th Anniversary Summer School and Festival, curated by the pianist Joanna MacGregor OBE.
The programme includes some fantastic Jazz highlights.
MacGregor has invited prominent names from the classical music world, and luminaries from other genres, from jazz to folk, and the wider arts, in an outstanding four-week programme of masterclasses, workshops and performance.
Jazz highlights include an exciting collaboration between pianist Huw Warren (One of the UK’s truly independent spirits, The Guardian), poet Alice Oswald and composer and improviser Steve Wishart. The magnificent Barzilian master percussionist Adriano Adewale and 14-string guitarist Luiz Morais lead classes in Latin rhythm and song. Joanna MacGregor also runs a class based on ragtime, and jazz rhythms infiltrating classical music, inspired by Scott Joplin’s centenary.
Trumpeter and bandleader Byron Wallen leads this year’s Open Jazz Ensemble, which will create a piece based on the rhythms of the Harlem Renaissance. Wallen will be supported by a variety of band jazz tutors, including Mark Lockhart, Eric Vloeimans, Martin France and Steve Lodder, who will also be leading a variety of instrument-specific workshops, such as Mark Lockhart’s saxophone sessions and Steve Lodder’s percussion practice.
Dartington Hall is a Grade 1 listed country estate located in Totnes, Devon built in the 14th century and boasts beautiful interiors and grounds. Professor Joanna MacGregor OBE is Artistic Director of the Summer School & Festival and is a British concert pianist, conductor and composer.
