Emma Fisk and Jim Birkett “Homage to Venuti and Lang”
Sunday afternoon 7 January @Inkwell 1.30pm start £9/7 (NUS £5)
Emma Fisk (violin) and James Birkett (guitar)
A real treat for lovers of classic jazz The names of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli are familiar to many as pioneers of string-based swing jazz but less universally known are the names Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang, the Italian-American duo who played hot violin and guitar jazz in the 1920s and 30s until cut short by Lang’s untimely death in 1933. Joe Venuti has been referred to as ‘the father of jazz violin and was a leader in the development of jazz violin techniques and style, while his musical partner Eddie Lang is widely regarded as the first jazz guitar virtuoso.
Bringing together their shared knowledge of early jazz styles and improvisation, Emma Fisk and James Birkett present an entertaining, virtuosic and informative programme of music associated with and inspired by the first great jazz violin and guitar partnership. Tickets are available on the door at Inkwell of online - book yours here https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/FEEHGL

Pianist and sax player Piero Tucci has appeared many times at Seven Arts. He has persuaded a stunning group of talented Canadian musicians that he has worked with on and off for 30 years to come over to the UK.  Anthony Michelli (drums) and Mike Filice (tenor sax) are both part of a wonderful quartet, alongside one of this country’s most talented bass players, Pete Turner. Mike Filice has played with the likes of Bill Stewart, Kenny Werner, and recorded with John Ballantyne, as well as accompanying the likes of Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross. Anthony Michelli has worked with Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann, Nikki Iles, Jerry Bergonzi and many others all. We are happy to host their very first concert in the UK at Seven Arts with their music originally recorded in New York. Expect some swinging, energetic and energetic contemporary jazz. Trish Clowes’ My Iris
Thursday evening 18 January @Seven Arts Doors 7.30pm £16/14 (NUS £5)
Trish Clowes saxophone, Chris Montague guitar, Ross Stanley keyboards, Tim Giles drums
Saxophonist Trish Clowes returns to Leeds with her new group, My Iris, drawing inspiration from the concept of an iris opening. Her band explore a kaleidoscopic range of sounds and emotions.
Well-known and acclaimed for her orchestral arrangements and work with string quartets, Clowes now explores smaller scale arrangements with equal confidence, her gifts for melody, form, improvisation and leadership coming further into the foreground. Clowes’ intricate compositions juxtapose startling melodies and ethereal whispers with gnarly lines and earthy grooves.
Trish Clowes is a former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist and has recorded four albums for London-based jazz label Basho Records. Her other activities include curating her own Emulsion series of cross-genre music festivals and performing with pianist Gareth Williams in the Glow Quartet. Trish has also worked extensively with larger ensembles, incorporating orchestras on her earlier albums ‘Tangent’ (2010) and ‘Pocket Compass’ (2014), and a string quartet on ‘and in the night-time she is there’ (2012).  In December 2015, Trish won a BASCA British Composer Award for ‘The Fox, The Parakeet and The Chestnut’, her work for the BBC Concert Orchestra.
My Iris features the talents of Chris Montague guitar, Ross Stanley keyboards and Tim Giles on drums. Dave Gelly, jazz critic for The Observer, wrote that ‘with just four players, the variety of tone colour is quite remarkable and the playing…is impeccable’. Past appearances include Gateshead International Jazz Festival, EFG London Jazz Festival and broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and Radio Bremen (Germany).
“Critics’ praise for My Iris ‘Clowes’s emphasis on composition, and the reserved evenness of her delivery often get her a “chamber-jazz” label, but the Englishwoman’s quirky songwriter’s ear, subtly sleepy tenor sax sound and bright intensity on soprano are anything but cerebral.’ **** John Fordham, The Guardian ‘
‘What’s going on in this band equates to some kind of magic’ –Sandy Brown Jazz
