Joe Stilgoe, Christmas Album and UK tour dates, November & December 2019.

Saturday, November 02, 2019

We have received the following press release;

Joe Stilgoe’s Christmas Album

Internationally acclaimed singer, pianist and songwriter Joe Stilgoe is set to release a classic Christmas album this Winter, complete with star-studded line up, big band songs, Christmas choirs and fireside yuletide lullabies.

Joe is joined by a host of special guests for a feast of Christmas classics, including Grammy nominated saxophonist Amy Dickson on ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’, the Canterbury Cathedral Girls Choir on
‘Rest in Peace’, iconic Jazz musician and son of Roy- Ben Castle on ‘Little White Berry’ and legendary comedian and actor Rob Brydon on ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’.

Joe introduces two original songs to the festive collection - sure to become seasonal favourites for years to come. Up-tempo festive party tune ‘The Night Before’ showcases Stilgoe’s versatile vocals and outstanding collection of musicians, whilst the powerful festive ballad ‘December Lights’ conjures the magical Christmas spirit.

Son of songwriter and TV personality Richard Stilgoe and opera singer Annabel Hunt, Joe has become a true modern-day entertainer, known globally as a performer of wit, style and a level of musicianship which has seen him recognised as one of the best singer-pianists in the world. Regular star of BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night and his own shows as presenter and performer, Joe has worked with some of the finest orchestras and bands in the world and regularly appears at renowned jazz club Ronnie Scotts.

Joe has been hosting Christmas specials at the Lyric Hammersmith with celebrity guests and musicians for many years and his Radio 2 show ‘Joe Stilgoe - Christmas At The Movies’ was the most popular show aired on
Christmas Day 2018.

Joe says: “I’ve wanted to make a Christmas album ever since I became a musician, and probably even before that. Christmas was always my favourite time of year, and though my beliefs have changed over the years and I don’t consider getting a Spiderman costume the pinnacle of my life anymore, I still look forward to it with the same excitement as I did when I was 5 years old. I love how people change at Christmas time- it’s a time for thinking about others and for generosity of time and energy, and this is reflected in the rising of spirits and the desire to share time with friends and family. This, from ‘A Christmas Carol’, sums it up perfectly.

“I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round—apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.”

Christmas brings with it a regular nod to the past, which suits the kind of music I love and love to perform. People want to swing, to jive, to sing together, to wallow in brass and strings, in well-crafted songs which are
unashamedly nostalgic, but also in something that feels relevant and celebratory of the time we live in. After years of Christmas shows featuring guests from the worlds of comedy, music, theatre and film, I’ve brought in
some pals for this record who are all brilliant and wonderful in unique ways, and hopefully we’ve made an album that feels like the perfect festive party - happy, romantic, fun, funny, wistful and full to the brim with the
spirit of Christmas.”
