Old-time, Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Ragtime, Folk, Americana… there’s something for everyone!

Hello music lovers!
We’ve got some great shows coming up over the next couple of weeks… starting with a packed programme this weekend!

Tomorrow night (Fri 17th May), we have SWAMPCANDY on tour from the U.S.A. This band came highly recommended to us via some music loving friends, so we’re trusting them that it’s going to be a great night - they certainly sound intriguing! Swampcandy describe themselves as playing pig drinkin’, whiskey eatin’, foot clapping’, hand stompin’, American music, fermented in primitive blues, pre war folk sounds, field hollers, gypsy jazz, and ragtime, steeped in influences from Robert Johnson to Radiohead. Their sound is distilled in a boiler of mercurial energy that swirls with tempo changes and dynamic peaks and valleys, holding the ear and refusing to let go. Can’t wait!!

The following night (Sat 18th), we have THE JAKE LEG JUG BAND who will be bringing authentic sounds of 1920’s and 30’s America – Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Ragtime – with their own twist. Songs of murder, betrayal, gambling, liquor and redemption. Signed to one of the UK’s most prestigious Jazz labels ‘Lake Records’ they record their albums as part of the ‘Vintage Recording Project’ essentially recording all live around ribbon microphones, as it would have been back in the 1930’s. We’re really looking forward to having them back!

Madison VioletThe following night (Sun 19th May), we will be at one of our home’s away from home - The Old Queen’s Head in Islington, presenting a very special Canadian act - Juno-nominated singer-songwriting duo, MADISON VIOLET. After 20 years together and many many miles, they have just released their latest album “Everything’s Shifting”, a heartfelt examination of how memory can splinter a heart, how loss shapes perspective and how sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you can’t have love without regret. Tonight, they will be playing songs old and new, in what promises to be an unmissable show.

Some upcoming highlights from the rest of the month include… Award winning and versatile Colombian guitarist/singer CAMILO MENJURA who returns to Green Note with his new solo project: “Loop Explorations” (Tues 21st May), where influences from the choral world, circle singing and Latin American folk are combined to create a unique soundscape; A Green Note debut from the acclaimed UK duo, TREVOR MOSS & HANNAH-LOU (Weds 22nd May) who have received rave reviews… “Moss‘s burbling guitar is reminiscent of Michael Chapman, Hannah-Lou’s cut-crystal voice like a modern Sandy Denny, but woven into the traditional structure are songs very much rooted in the present rather than the past.” Mojo; The welcome return of banjoman CURTIS ELLER & HIS AMERICAN CIRCUS (Thurs 30th May) who never fail to entertain; A fusion of Indian and Celtic music from INDROTRANCELTIC (Mon 27th May; and a Green Note debut from THE OLD TIME RAGS (Fri 31st May) who perform good time, blues, folk, roots and jazz with a vaudevillian flair featuring one man band Laurence Marshall and percussive dancer Phoebe Douthwaite - can’t wait!

On Sun 26th May, we have another Green Note debut, this one from LISA MARINI who will be playing her beautifully crafted songs, infectious guitar picking and a defiant voice performed with some of London’s best young jazz players - a delicious hybrid of Folk, roots and jazz. We’re also excited to welcome back legendary Texas singer-songwriter TISH HINOJOSA (Weds 28th May). Her blend of folk, country, Latino, and pop has an undeniable far reaching appeal, garnering her accolades such as a White House concert at the invitation of President and Mrs. Clinton and teaming up with artists such as Joan Baez, Booker T. Jones, Flaco Jimenez, Pete Seeger, and Dwight Yoakam. With seventeen albums to her name, Tish’s distinct sound has gained her much critical acclaim, and she’s now touring in support of her latest release - West.

All this and lots LOTS more…. as always, with music 7 nights/week, and often more than one show per night, this is just a selection of what we have coming up! For the full listings please check out OUR WEBSITE, or pick up a programme next time you’re passing, as there’s far too much to mention here!

Hope to see you at one of our shows very soon!

Lots of love,

Immy & Risa xx
