Hello all you connoisseurs of culture and lovers of live music – greetings from the 606 in Chelsea, known for presenting the best jazz, soul, Latin, groove, R&B & blues musicians in the UK bar none.
This mail provides details about the Club’s upcoming shows from Monday 19th to Saturday 31st August.

Sunday 1st: a new project led by Memphis, Tennessee-born singer/pianist Charlie Wood and pianist Robin Aspland (George Coleman, Georgie Fame, Kenny Wheeler)
Thursday 5th: British/Irish singer-songwriter Ayala, compared to artists like Nancy Sinatra and Amy Winehouse, launches her new album ’The Crossing’
Thursday 19th: Australian vocalist Ingrid James & her quartet featuring renowned pianist/arranger Pete Churchill (Mark Murphy, London Vocal Project) launch their new album ‘Search for Peace’
Monday 23rd: Highly regarded steel pan player Mark Cherrie (Edwin Starr, Jimmy Ruffin, Gary Barlow) launches his new record, ‘Any Anxious Colour’ ft. special guests, Dave O’Higgins-sax & Fergus Gerrand-percussion

A virtuoso on the chromatic harmonica Adam Glasser’s playing is eloquent, subtle and constantly inventive. Renowned as a leading exponent of South African township jazz, he released two critically acclaimed albums on US Sunnyside Records, ‘Free at First’ (Winner SA Music Awards Best Jazz Album 2010) and ‘Mzansi’ (Best Jazz Album nominee 2012). Across a rich career spanning over four decades Adam includes performances with Dudu Pukwana, Hugh Masekela, Sting, the Eurythmics, Incognito & Joe Zawinul. Adam’s latest quartet features guitar virtuoso Ant Law (a ‘gamechanger’, Guardian), Andy Hamill-bass and Corrie Dick-drums. Special stuff.

Tue 20th 8:00pm DJANGADA FT. SAM WATTS
Named after a fishing boat found in Bahia in the north-east of Brazil, the home of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, the piano trio Djangada take this classic sound as a starting point and brings it into the 21st century. Adding a funkier take to the traditional Brazilian rhythms the sound is inspired by the jazz trio aesthetic but at the same time retaining the energetic party atmosphere of the original style. The end result is a mix of Afro-Brazilian grooves, funky basslines and a strong improvisational flair, making the band’s shows exciting and entertaining. The three members, Sam Watts-piano, Matheus Nova-bass & Marcinho Pereira-drums are all established performers in their own right, with performances at the likes of the Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, Ronnie Scott’s and the Montreal, London, Paris, Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals on impressive CVs.

Mark Lockheart is a multi-award-winning tenor sax player who first made his name working with seminal band Loose Tubes. Co-founder of the universally regarded “The Perfect Houseplants” Mark has toured and recorded with Django Bates, Mark Anthony Turnage and Seb Rochford’s highly acclaimed Polar Bear. His album “Ellington In Anticipation” was the MOJO Album of the Year and he was named Jazz FM’s “Instrumentalist of the Year 2016”. And if all that wasn’t enough he is also a highly respected educator, writer and arranger. Tonight he is appearing with his quartet featuring the impressive pianist Alcyona Mick.

In an extensive and highly respected career London-based Lily Dior is recognized as one of Australia’s foremost vocalists. Tonight’s performance will be a mix of classic jazz standards and the groovier, funkier side of her repertoire, all performed with the powerful and charismatic vocals that are Lily’s trademark. Her stellar band tonight features the robust, melodic, playing of 606 favourite Dave Lewis-sax.

Beverley Skeete’s career in the music industry is the stuff that dreams are made of. A first call singer for numerous high-profile artists including Robbie Williams, Tina Turner and Elton John she was also a pivotal member of ex-Rolling Stones’ bassist Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings. Her talent and versatility have put her in a class that few can equal. Also featuring Special Guest vocalist Kevin Leo.

Bruce Adams has been a stalwart of the UK jazz scene for almost 50 years. Performing with the likes of Harry Sweets Edison, Buddy Tate, Al Cohn and Benny Waters he is widely regarded as one of the finest mainstream cornet/trumpet players in Europe. The recipient of more than 30 British Jazz Awards and twice named BBC Jazz Musician of the Year, virtuosic sax and clarinet player Alan Barnes has collaborated with the likes of Michel Legrand, Jamie Cullum & Van Morrison. A remarkable front line with their swinging band.

A highly regarded, award-winning singer, songwriter and pianist, Frances Madden has played to full houses at leading jazz venues and festivals around her native Australia, as well as supporting artists such as Dionne Warwick &Grammy-Award winner Gregory Porter. Now based in London, she’s working on a new album with Grammy-winning producer/engineer Cameron Craig (Adele). With her unique take on selected American Songbook classics along with her impressive originals this is an exciting and sophisticated artist who truly delivers.

Mon 26th 8:00pm CARNIVAL NIGHT! SHIREEN FRANCIS’ ‘CARIBBEAN ISLAND PROJECT’
In honour of this Carnival weekend tonight we are featuring 606 favourite The Caribbean Island Project, an exciting group put together and fronted by the multi-talented singer Shireen Francis. Integrating jazz harmonies with the Afro-Caribbean/Brazilian rhythms of Reggae, Calypso and Samba, the band create an unusual but highly accessible musical hybrid. Featuring Dominic Grant-guitar and Mark Cherrie-steel pan this is a great way to spend Bank Holiday Carnival Monday!

Her brilliant compositions, relaxed tempo and melodic approach provide a fresh insight into modern jazz. After the critical acclaim given to the trio’s brilliant project “Alexander Scriabin’s Ragtime Band” (Mojo’s Jazz CD of the Year), their latest record ‘Pachyderm’, which they are showcasing tonight, marks a return to the group’s original compositions. The trio, also featuring Oli Hayhurst-bass and Tom Hooper-drums, will feature a selection from the new record together with some brand-new original compositions, choros from Brazil and one or two golden oldies. David is a world class talent with a playful sense of humour, which makes all his shows both intriguing and fun!

An outstanding singer, Rebecca Poole (AKA Purdy) simply oozes charisma, which combined with her sultry style and surefooted vocal delivery makes her truly impressive. Her album “Diamond in the Dust” affirmed her as a significant solo artist and was followed by a tour supporting Jools Holland, performances at Wembley Stadium, The Royal Albert Hall and the TV series ‘The Crown’! This show features music from her latest album, ‘Dreamer’s Ball’, which displays Rebecca’s strengths as a vocalist and composer with her songs already receiving airplay on Jazz FM, Smooth Jazz & BBC Introducing.

Born and raised in Brixton, singer and harmonica player Errol Linton got his first break 30 years ago when heard by a BBC producer busking and has been steadily building his reputation as a world-class blues talent ever since. He was nominated for ‘Best Blues Act’in the 2019 Jazz FM Awards, featured alongside Big Bill Broonzy in BBC 2’s ‘Two Generations of the Blues’ and championed by radio presenters John Peel, Robert Elms, Paul Jones, & Cerys Matthews. Accompanied by his quintet this is home grown blues at its best.

Join award-winning vocalist Louise Balkwill for an evening of hidden gems from The Great American Songbook, original vocalese and burning scat. The 2022 winner of the Riga Jazz Stage international jazz voice competition, Louise has been hailed as amongst the UK’s finest vocal improvisers. She will be performing songs from her debut album “First Class”, as well as her celebrated original vocalese. With their undeniable synergy the group breathes new life into repertoire from the golden age of jazz and beyond.
