Jez Matthews of Jazz at The Lescar writes;
I just wanted to let you know that we’ve got some real gigs in the diary, 3 at a secret garden location near The Lescar and 1 at a new venue for us Theatre Deli.
I’m excited that its a contrasting set of bands as always, and hopefully we’ll be expanding this list with gigs at some other venues including back at The Lescar, subject to forthcoming announcements from the government about lockdown rules. We can’t wait to be back there, and we can’t wait to hear the music and see people again at our various events.

Sat 12th June: Charlotte Keeffe Quartet
Charlotte Keeffe is one of the UK’s finest and most adventurous improvising musicians, a trumpet/ flugelhorn player with a wonderful expressive range, full of creative fire and imagination. Her quartet features guitarist Moss Freed (Let Spin), bass player Ashley John Long (John Law), and Ben Handysides on drums. With a sellout performance at Lancaster Jazz Festival in 2019, and a live recording from London’s Jazz in the Round that has been played on radio stations across the UK and internationally, they’ve just released a new album on Sheffield-based label Discus Music, called ‘Right Here, Right Now’. Expansive and exciting new music!
Sat 10th July: Deschanel Gordon Trio
Winner of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2020, Deschanel Gordon is a wonderful pianist making waves on the UK jazz scene, having worked with the likes of Mark Kavuma, Cassie Kinoshi’s SEED Ensemble and US-born singer Judi Jackson, as well as performing at venues across London and at festivals in Europe and the USA. We’re delighted to welcome him to Sheffield with a fantastic trio featuring Will Sach (bass) and Will Cleasby (drums). Fresh and vital contemporary jazz from a true emerging star.

Sun 18th July: Abbie Finn Trio
A vibrant and energising presence on the Newcastle jazz scene, along with appearances at Wigan, Middlesbrough and Durham Jazz Festivals, drummer Abbie Finn’s latest trio album is an utter treat of swinging contemporary jazz, with Harry Keeble on tenor sax, and Paul Grainger on double bass. With music that is assertive and controlled, yet very much alive, this is a new trio that looks sure to make an impact.

Mon 16th August: balo + Power Out DOUBLE BILL
A double bill featuring two very contrasting and innovative approaches to improvised music, both from musicians based in Sheffield, striking out in new and different directions.
balo are Manon McCoy (harp) and Will Shaw (drums). Their music is thoughtful, atmospheric, delicately balanced and interactive, mixing improvisation and composition with an approach and instrumentation that is wholly original.
Power Out is Sarah Heneghan, a drummer who’s music extends the drum kit to include drum machines and bassline sequencers to create an immersive mix of danceable grooves, loops and textures. She’s performed at Manchester Jazz Festival, No Bounds Festival, and Sage Gateshead’s Sage Sessions.
