‘Portrait in Evans’
Bill Evans’ timeless compositions reimagined with new lyrics and a unique sound
San Francisco’s rising star vocalist Noa Levy joins UK Parliamentary Award-winning pianist Paul Edis and his Trio for a beautiful exploration of the original music by the legendary Bill Evans. Their new album ‘Portrait In Evans’, released on CD and Digital on 20 March 2026 by Dot Time Records, features Bill Evans’ timeless compositions with lyrics – some written by Paul and Noa, and some given new interpretations. The album reimagines ‘Very Early’, ‘Waltz For Debby’ and ‘Blue in Green’ – as well as less-known compositions – with beautiful arrangements and a unique sound. This tribute places the human voice at the centre, and allows Evans’ harmonic language to carry stories of love, loss, parenthood, and emotional vulnerability. Both Noa Levy and Paul Edis are artists shaped by Evans’ emotional honesty, lyricism, and uncompromising musical sensitivity.
Noa Levy said,
“There’s an emotional openness in Bill’s compositions that feels incredibly human. Writing lyrics wasn’t about changing them – it was about stepping inside them.” Paul Edis added, “We chose tunes composed by Bill at different stages in his musical and personal life. In doing so, we’ve tried to ‘paint a portrait’ of ‘Bill Evans the artist’. The title nods to Portrait in Jazz, but it’s also about perspective and, inevitably, a portrait of ourselves through the way we hear his compositions.”
Currently lighting up the San Francisco Bay Area jazz scene, Noa Levy captivates audiences with a swinging, authentic sound that JAZZIT Magazine calls “at the same time classic and contemporary”. Winner of the Sheila Jordan Award for her Voice & Bass Album Debut (with Japanese bass player Shimpei Ogawa), Noa’s performances at prestigious venues like SFJAZZ and The Fillmore showcase her “expertly rendered selections” (NYC Jazz Record) and draw inspiration from her heroines Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae.
Paul Edis stands as one of the UK’s leading creative musicians, earning prestigious recognition including Best Album at the 2023 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. His performances alongside jazz luminaries like Jon Faddis and Tim Garland showcase his versatility, while his original compositions demonstrate his passionate commitment to melody and creative innovation within both jazz and classical traditions. Described by Jazz Journal as “a major voice in British jazz”, Paul brings depth and sophistication to every performance.
The project is anchored by a world-class trio featuring bassist Adam King and drummer Joel Barford whose empathetic interplay reflects the conversational approach Evans himself pioneered. The album also features two-time BBC Jazz Musician of the Year Winner, Alan Barnes, as guest on bass clarinet, clarinet and saxophone.

Recorded at Red Gables, London, and produced by Noa Levy and Paul Edis, ‘Portrait In Evans’ honours Evans’ legacy while infusing it with an intimate perspective and contemporary relevance. Evans’ music is treated as already lyrical – the emotional narratives embedded within his melodies and voicings are teased out, fused with original lyrics and carefully chosen texts. The result is an album that feels both reverent and intimate: unmistakably Bill Evans, yet unmistakably personal.
