June Highlights - part 1

Hello Green Note community,

Hope you’re all doing well…

Summer is upon us and we’re thrilled to bring you an unforgettable June filled with musical delights!

UPCOMING HIGHLIGHTS…

We have a global selection this month including a Green Note debut from one of the only artists in the world to write & compose new songs in the endangered Ladino language.
NANI VAZANA captures the spirit of the ancient, matriarchal language and culture, passed down from her Portuguese-Moroccan grandmother, and propels it into the 21st century with socially pertinent lyrics, celebrating migration, gender and female empowerment (Sun 16th June). Four of the world’s leading exponents in Yiddish instrumental and vocal music come together for an afternoon of songs, stories and culture on Saturday (8th June). Hailing from the UK, Latvia, USA and Tatarstan, this motley band of Yiddishists bring voices, violin, clarinets and piano to make a varied and exciting collaborative programme of VOICES FROM THE EAST.

THE SPARROWS OF PARIS are back this Friday (7th June) to transport you in time and space to Paris of the beginning of the 20th century with a repertoire of vintage french chansons (Edith Piaf, Fréhel, Mistinguett, Arletty) and jazz-musette of the period. Also on Friday night, Green Note favourites DUNAJSKA KAPELYE are back with their irresistible mix of authentic Balkan and Gypsy folk, Hot club jazz, Klezmer and Tango. We also look forward to welcoming back flamenco dancer extrordinaire LOURDES FERNANDEZ this month with accompaniment from her top class band of musicians (Weds 12th June).

Fans of Americana also have some treats in store. Australia via Nashville’s TORIA RICHINGS makes her UK debut this month (Sun 9th June). Toria has made a name for herself in Nashville - selling out at the infamous Bluebird café was definitely a highlight! Toria’s music is a rich blend of folk and Americana and her evocative lyrics captivate audiences and critics alike, earning her a dedicated following in America. Originally from Bedford but also now Nashville based, soulful Americana singer-songwriter DANNI NICHOLLS is back this month for a rare UK tour (Weds 5th June). Touring songs from her upcoming fourth studio album and a new country covers album, catch Danni while you can! We’re also very excited to welcome back the one and only CARA LUFT (Tues 11th June)! To mark her long career and her 50th birthday, Cara (The Small Glories, The Wailin’ Jennys) is launching “50 for 50” — fifty curated shows that will see her travel across Canada, the US and Europe. Join her for a one-of-a-kind unique performance full of musical surprises!

GREEN NOTE HITS THE ROAD

We only have two shows this month as part of our Green Note hits the Road series, but both are highly recommended!

This Thursday we look forward to welcoming back one of our favourite discoveries of the last few years. BURR ISLAND (Thurs 6th June @ St Pancras Old Church) are an Alternative Indie Folk duo whose close harmonies and introspective lyrics take you on an intimate, melodic journey in search of meaning and value. With “shades of Simon & Garfunkel”, the West Country pair are certainly ones to watch!

Also back this month is the incredible Australian sister duo CHARM OF FINCHES (Thurs 20th June @ The Lexington) whose seamless blood harmonies traverse melancholy and wonder in equal measure. We first discovered this outstanding duo during our ‘Virtually Green Note’ live streams and were totally blown away! Luckily they’ve managed to make it over to the UK a few times since and we can’t wait to welcome them back!
