From the ‘Jazz in the time of Corona Virus’ newsletter;

#8 Jazz in the time of the Corona Virus;

This week saw amazing performances from the home of Tom Ollendorff, Tom Riviere, Andre Lisle and Will Barry, plus a #VortexReplay from the incredible Aaron Parks + Q and A, all of which you can still watch for one more day only on our YouTube and Facebook channels.

Coming up, we are very excited to share a replay from JZ Replacement featuring Tim Lefebvre, always a firm favourite at the club, tomorrow evening (23rd May) at 8pm, and then next week we have replays from Tori Freestone (Tuesday 26th May) and John Law (Thursday 28th May) so make sure to tune in. More info below.

If you’re able, please do continue to donate and support the club! For every gig, just donating the price of a beer or drink using the links for each gig will help support us through this time and will mean we can keep bringing you the best in jazz and improvised music. There’s lots more exciting gigs coming up, including live performances from bassist John Pope, replay gigs from Jeff Williams, Jean Toussaint and much much more!

VORTEX ONLINE SEMINAR #5
“Don’t forget the punter”
In the changing environment, the position of the audience is vital - their changing status and more. How do they feel about how they are beginning to engage with the musicians? Are they looking further afield than before? How do they feel about paying/donating? What will they be looking for when venues reopen?
Join our Zoom Meeting this Wednesday, everyone’s welcome!

This week we say a sad farewell to a towering figure in the UK jazz scene. John Cumming provided the necessary the scaffolding for the careers of many successful UK and international musicians as well as being a good friend to many of them. He was the visionary who founded Serious Production with John Ellson, launched what became the London Jazz Festival in 1996 and was awarded an OBE for Services to Jazz in 2014.
If you’d like to give money to a special ring-fenced funding pot for musicians struggling in light of Covid-19 and in honour of John, you can do so at http://www.helpmusicians.org.uk/johncumming.
