Brilliant pianist Gwilym Simcock leads this tribute to the works associated with the short-lived but highly influential American bassist Jaco Pastorius. Featuring the incredible electric bass of Laurence Cottle and the percussion and drums of rising star Josh Savage!

Writing in the Guardian, John Fordham summed it up: ‘Much of Pastorius’s music has been interpreted by big ensembles and by Weather Report, but Simcock achieved considerable breadth with just the trio. Simcock’s ingenious arrangements allowed the piano not only to evoke the textures of bigger lineups on tunes such as the Joni Mitchell/Pastorius collaboration Jericho, Liberty City, Young and Fine, Elegant People (from Weather Report’s Black Market album) Young and Fine, Bright Size Life (from the 1975 Pat Metheny debut album that also revealed Pastorius to a wider world). Simcock’s account of Mitchell’s Jericho almost stole the set, however, in its softly rocking melancholy, poignant harmonies and patiently spacey basslines. The gig cherished Pastorius’s lyricism, when many celebrations of him concentrate on virtuosic hyper-funk’.

There comes a point in the career of every artist where they face a choice. Continue refining a sound that already works or take a risk and step somewhere unfamiliar. On her new release, Love Now, Pay Later, Jo Harrop chooses the latter, and the result is one of the most surprising and rewarding albums of her career.

For listeners who have followed Harrop through Weathering The Storm, The Heart Wants, When Winter Turns to Spring, and the acclaimed The Path Of A Tear, this album may initially feel like a departure. The jazz, blues and late-night intimacy that have become her trademarks remain firmly intact, but producer Chris Seefried has gently nudged the music towards a warmer, more soulful landscape. Northern Soul, vintage R&B and classic singer-songwriter influences sit comfortably alongside the jazz sensibilities that have always defined Harrop’s work.

The inspiration may have begun with the spirit of Dusty In Memphis, but this is no exercise in nostalgia. Instead, Harrop creates a sound that feels timeless rather than retro.

Full Biography

Jo Harrop is one of those rare singers whose voice seems less concerned with impressing an audience than connecting with it. In an age where so much music competes for attention, Harrop’s greatest strength lies in her ability to draw listeners closer, inviting them into songs that feel deeply personal yet somehow universal.

Blending jazz, soul, blues, folk and Americana influences, she has developed a style that is entirely her own. There is a warmth and honesty to her music that feels increasingly rare, whether she is interpreting a standard, delivering a heartfelt ballad or performing one of her own beautifully crafted songs. Every lyric feels lived in. Every phrase feels considered. Nothing is wasted.

Born in the North East of England and now based in London, Harrop’s path to recognition was anything but conventional. Having spent years honing her craft away from the spotlight, wider recognition arrived when Iggy Pop discovered her music following the release of Weathering The Storm. Struck by what he heard, he championed her on BBC Radio 6 Music, describing her as “a very fine jazz singer” before later calling her “a superb and unimaginably good vocalist.” For many listeners it was their first introduction to an artist whose talent had long deserved wider attention.

Since then, Harrop has quietly built one of the most respected catalogues in contemporary British jazz. Her recordings include Weathering The Storm, The Heart Wants, When Winter Turns To Spring with pianist Paul Edis, and The Path Of A Tear, recorded at the legendary Village Studios in Los Angeles and produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Klein.

The albums reveal an artist constantly searching for emotional truth rather than easy answers. Love, loss, hope, regret and resilience all run through her work, delivered with a sincerity that never feels forced. When Winter Turns To Spring was recognised with Album of the Year at the 2023 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, while The Path Of A Tear attracted widespread international acclaim, earning a host of four- and five-star reviews and further cementing her reputation as both a singer and songwriter of remarkable depth.

Live performance remains at the heart of everything Harrop does. Whether performing in the intimate surroundings of a jazz club or standing before thousands in a concert hall, she possesses the rare ability to make every listener feel as though she is singing directly to them. That gift was recognised in 2025 when Gregory Porter personally selected her to support his thirteen-date UK tour, including four sold-out nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Her career has since taken her to many of the world’s most respected stages, including Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, the 606 Club, PizzaExpress Live, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center in New York, SFJAZZ, Newcastle City Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Manchester Arena and The Glasshouse in Gateshead.

Critics have frequently praised the emotional depth of her performances. All About Jazz highlighted her ability to convey a remarkable range of moods effortlessly and naturally, while audiences continue to be drawn to the unmistakable humanity that runs through everything she sings.

Student support set beforehand and jam session follows.

50 years of Birmingham Jazz will be celebrated on Thursday 8 October in a special evening at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire that recognises the impact the organisation has had on the city’s now thriving jazz scene.

The centrepiece is the premiere of a specially-commissioned suite of music played by the Birmingham Jazz Orchestra. Each of the five movements has been written by one of the city’s leading current composers, inspired by the musical influences from Birmingham Jazz’s five decades.

Birmingham composers Ed Puddick, Alicia Gardener-Trejo, Jonathan Silk, Dave Sear and Alex Astbury each contribute a movement with influences spanning the jazz-rock era of the 1970s, through the maturing compositional style of writers like Kenny Wheeler in the 1990s, to a uniquely contemporary finale that takes inspiration from all five decades.

A support set in the Conservatoire’s Eastside Jazz Club by RBC musicians, led by The Zeb Murphy Quartet sets the scene, and a jam session welcomes all following the main performance.

Over the past fifty years, music charity Birmingham Jazz has built a distinctive live programme that promotes and creates opportunities for musical innovation and artistic achievement. The programme has brought together international and national artists, while giving local musicians and students a platform to write, perform and develop live work that might otherwise not have been possible.

Legendary names including Ronnie Scott, Jan Garbarek, Humphrey Lyttelton, Mike Gibbs, Stan Tracey and Abdullah Ibrahim are just some of the many high profile artists to perform live under the Birmingham Jazz banner over the years.

Phil Rose, Birmingham Jazz, said, “I’m so proud to promote jazz by local, national and international musicians that the people of Birmingham would not otherwise have been able to see in the city. We have also created over the last five decades an inclusive programme full of different musicians from all parts of the UK. Our members and volunteers still give us time and money to deliver a programme of sheer excellence.”

Josh Bailey is a highly talented young jazz pianist based in Birmingham who has rapidly made a name for himself in the West Midlands music scene. Described as a “Hall Green wonderkid,” he is currently undertaking a jazz degree course at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He is also an alumni of B:music’s talent development programme B:and Together and also the Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire jazz course where he studied with tutors Ben Muirhead and Mike Williams.

In his trio is 3rd year jazz bassist Casper Hamilton and graduate drummer Dom Holyoake. The trio have worked together for the past year and a half and have had opportunities to play in many different venues and events in Birmingham and West Midlands, including Digbeth Jazz, 1000 trades, Pan Pan, Upstairs at Cherry Reds, Birmingham Eastside jazz club, Wolverhampton Arts Centre, Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul Festival and also B:music’s Town Hall where they played the support set for American jazz trumpeter Benny Benack III and jazz at Lincoln centre. The trio will perform an unmissable mix of original compositions and jazz standards.

SIXTY YEARS ON THE ROAD…

Guitarist, vocalist, raconteur Dave Peabody began performing in the mid ‘60’s during the heyday of the great British blues boom… and has now been a gigging musician for over 60 years.

As a solo acoustic artist Dave is recognised as specialist in early country blues and he’s achieved the accolade of being voted “Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year” three times by the British Blues Connection and Blues In Britain Magazine.

Dave’s first group was the Honest John Three.
The band won the National Jug Band contest in 1966 (one of the judges was Jo Ann Kelly)

From 1967 to 1970 Dave moved from London to Plymouth, Devon to attend Plymouth College of Art. He soon formed the Pongo Flossy Goodtime Merger, a goodtime band that quickly became popular locally. With other members of the group, Dave organised the Sincerity Hall Folk and Blues Club which booked many of the scenes name folk acts (Ralph McTell, The Strawbs, etc.) and British blues musicians such as Jo Ann Kelly, Mike Cooper, alongside American bluesmen Arthur “Big Boy Crudup and Juke Boy Bonner.

On returning to London Dave formed Tight Like That.
They recorded an album (under an assumed name) for the French label Disques Vogue in 1971.
The following year they recorded their well thought of album Hokum for the Village Thing label. When Tight Like That wound up operations (around 1974) Dave, for the rest of the decade played as the duo Peabody & McNulty with the band’s tea-chest bass player Hugh McNulty. The pair performed all around the UK’s folk club scene as well making incursions into Europe, especially Belgium. When Hugh finally decided to retire his tea-chest bass, Dave began a long association with blues and boogie pianist Bob Hall. Dave has also gigged with pianists Diz Watson and Colin Earl, with the guitar players Gypsy Dave Smith and Steve Williams, and with the harmonica players
Rob Mason, Brendan Power and Alan Glen.

For 15 years (1996 – 2011) Dave fronted the electric King Earl Boogie Band as their vocalist and guitarist. The 5-piece band, whose other members also included Mungo Jerry pianist Colin Earl and original Status Quo drummer John Coghlan, played numerous festivals including Colne’s Great British R’n’B Festival and Havant’s Blues at The Fort.

Dave has appeared on over 50 albums including 11 albums under his own name, 4 with Bob Hall, and 2 with the King Earl Boogie Band. The album Some of These Days (released March 2019) is a joint collaboration with classically trained violinist Regina Mudrich, who is originally from East Germany. He’s performed at clubs and festivals in over 20 different countries (including the USA) making him one of the most experienced and seasoned British blues men performing today. Dave has forged connections with many American blues artists including Mississippi legend Honeyboy Edwards and Grammy award winning harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite, accompanying them on British and European tours. Over the years, Dave has played on stage with a host of other blues men including Sonny Terry, Memphis Slim, Louisiana Red, Big Joe Duskin, Big Boy Henry, Chicago Bob Nelson, Neal Pattman, Dave Van Ronk, John Hammond Jnr. and, most recently, Mark Hummel.

Come and join us for a concert celebrating collaboration and vibrant youth music in the South West of England!

Launched earlier this year by Superlocrian in partnership with Dorset Music Service and Devon Music Education Hub. Beyond the Hills & Valleys invited musicians aged 11-19 in full-time education to compose original music inspired by the natural world and the environment. The competition provides a high-level composing opportunity within a supportive educational environment, with the selected composers receiving professional mentoring, feedback and the opportunity to develop their music with Superlocrian, culminating in world premiere performances of their compositions by the ensemble in this concert.

18-year-old composer Freya Murray from Dorchester has been announced as the winner of Superlocrian’s Beyond the Hills & Valleys composing competition. Her composition, alongside works by three other selected young composters, will be premiered by chamber-jazz septet Superlocrian.

Murray takes first place ahead of Jacob Butler-Sereno, 19, from the University of Exeter; Elliot Mair, 18, from Devonport High School for Boys; and highly commended 16-year-old Lukas Makuta from Ivybridge Community College.

In addition, the concert will feature performances from young musicians from across Devon and Dorset, along with two more world premieres from acclaimed composers Laura Rossi and Iain Ballamy, along with some old favourites from Superlocrian’s critically acclaimed debut album.

Described as “one of Wales’s leading composers” by Wales Arts Review, Claire Victoria Roberts is a vocalist, violinist and composer taking traditional Welsh song in a new direction.

In collaboration with virtuosic strings, she performs folk songs and traditional music from both Wales and Argentina (where, in Patagonia, there is a Welsh-speaking community.) The music blends lush harmonies with vocal improvisation and lilting melodies.

Claire Victoria Roberts was born in West Wales, where she made a name for herself as a contemporary composer, before going on to study jazz singing in Spain. Last year, she performed at Llais Festival, The Crescent in Belfast, and Glasgow Jazz, as well as performing her unique arrangements of Welsh songs at the Barbican in London as part of Poesis for London Jazz Festival. She has previously sung at the Albert Hall for London jazz in 2024, and at Manchester Jazz Festival. As a composer, her music has been performed by BBC NOW and she has been commissioned by Oliver Coates, The Wigmore Hall, and the National Youth Choir. In 2021, she was awarded a PRS Foundation Composer Award, and in 2019, an RPS Composer Award.

In a beautiful St Hilda’s Church, in Crofton Park, guitarist/composer Branco Stoysin, life-long aficionado of Nikola Tesla, performs his epic new music/video movie project Aurora Tesla, that in the most lyrical, illuminating and concise way tells the story about Nikola Tesla, Serbian born genius of electricity. It’s a poignant and a sole tribute, marking 170 years since the birth of Nikola Tesla and 130 years since the birth of modern civilisation with the implementation of Nikola Tesla’s Polyphase Alternating Current System on The Niagara Falls in 1896. On this day, the 15th of November 1896, 130 years ago, the very first kilowatts of the electricity, derived from Nikola Tesla’s Electricity Power system that harnessed the Niagara Falls, were distributed from Niagara Falls Hydroelectric Power Plant, to 40 Km away the Buffalo state of New York, marking the birth of modern civilisation. Violinist and vocalist Dominic Ingham and pianist Jay Verma bring a fresh perspective to the classic violin-and-piano duo, performing a seamless blend of jazz, Scottish and Irish folk, and ‘modern-day lullabies’ (Jazz Mann).
Yorkshire-born violinist and vocalist Dominic Ingham is ‘fast establishing himself as one of the UK’s leading proponents of jazz violin’ (Jazzwise), following the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Role Models. The record presents a compelling suite of lucidly crafted, characterful pieces that showcase Dominic’s distinctive and highly personal style, deeply rooted in folk and classical traditions. He has toured extensively across the UK with his quartet, performing at renowned venues and festivals including Ronnie Scott’s, Love Supreme, the Royal Albert Hall, and the EFG London Jazz Festival. Recent collaborations include Emma Rawicz, Trish Clowes, and Elliot Galvin. In 2020, Dominic was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Award for Jazz Newcomer and was a finalist in the prestigious Zbigniew Seifert International Jazz Violin Competition. He currently teaches jazz violin at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Jay Verma is a distinguished pianist and composer based in London. ‘Guesde (pronounced “gesht”) are a North London jazz fusion band blending Indian classical music, jazz, and London sounds like drum & bass and grime into something raw and unique. At the centre of what Guesde does is experimentation - keeping the energy of rehearsal alive in performance, where things can shift, stretch, or fall apart completely, driving sounds through a live effects processing unit that takes sound in real time and mangles it into something new. Their live shows lean into performance art, featuring mirror masks made by artist Freddie Yauner. Their influences span the legacies of Shakti, King Crimson, Arthur Russell and Wayne Shorter, while also pulling from contemporary artists like Dijon, Wayne Krantz, and Tigran Hamasyan. They’ve been played on Maria Grapsa’s East of the Sun on One Jazz Radio and by Karl Bos on Soho Radio, and have performed at venues including MAP Studio Cafe, Hampstead Jazz Club, and The Elephant’s Head.

Danish-born Brighton resident Sara Oschlag has quietly established herself as is one of the UK’s premier jazz vocalists. She is a regular performer at leading jazz festivals and venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, Love Supreme Festival, Jazz at The Lincoln Center and Pizza Express, has sung at events all across Europe, and has built up a YouTube presence of over 12 million views. Equally at home in the role of band leader as she is as a much in-demand special guest, she has recently appeared as featured vocalist with the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, Pete Long’s Echoes of Ellington Big Band and Arnie Somogyi’s Scenes in The City Band, and duetted with US trumpet/vocal star Benny Benack III for Brighton Jazz Festival.

In 2024 Sara produced a new album, ‘YEAH!’. Released to widespread critical acclaim, it was chosen as ‘Album Of The Week’ on Danish Radio’s dedicated jazz channel, P8.

An exciting and inventive saxophonist, Art Themen has been an appealing presence on the British jazz circuit for over 60 years. A previous winner of the tenor sax category in the British Jazz Awards, recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians and shortlisted for the Jazz Instrumentalist of the year in the recent Parliamentary Jazz Awards, this living legend has famously combined his role as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with saxophone duties in the bands of Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey as well as recordings with Joe Cocker, Jack Bruce and even Bing Crosby. Described by THE OBSERVER as “One of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians”, he remains as brilliant and inimitable as ever. Themen’s organ trio features organist Pete Whittaker, formerly of The Nigel Price Organ Trio, and drummer George Double who has worked as sideman to Shirley Bassey and Jack Jones. midori jaeger is a cellist and songwriter originally from Japan. She headlines Stone Nest with an intimate and captivating performance to launch her new EP (Re)planted with a band.

(Re)planted and her previous EP (Un)planted draw upon a childhood spent across multiple continents and an adulthood geographically separated from family, exploring themes of displacement, belonging, heritage, and solace found in creative expression. Critically acclaimed Welsh keyboardist/composer Dave Jones and his newest band ‘Stratospheric’ play their own exciting brand of jazz-influenced progressive rock. The material is original Prog Rock, played by a line-up who are essentially jazz musicians that work in a broad range of musical styles.

‘Stratospheric’ has a great line-up (in fact more of a pool of musicians who share the gigs) including those musicians who were involved in recording at the very start of this project, alongside those who joined later for the first live performances in 2026. Between them all, their other work has seen them involved in performing/recording with e.g. Portishead, Jethro Tull, Toyah, Kasabian, Goldfrapp, and the late great rock and jazz session bassist Herbie Flowers.

Dave has composed a great deal of other music, both for his own jazz ensembles and for solo piano, and also for tv and film, having tracks used worldwide in productions for major networks, including e.g. The Big Bang Theory, news and current affairs programmes in Japan and Europe, and lifestyle programmes in the UK, alongside films including the Hollywood movie ‘Nuremberg’ (2026) with his piano piece ‘Paradise Found’.

We’re absolutely delighted to announce funding has been secured for Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music 2026 and gratefully acknowledge Arts Council England along with our partners and investors for their support. Tickets are now on sale.

More than 67 musicians will feature over 26 performances in 9 days across 7 of the region’s top music venues including Gosforth Civic Theatre, The Cluny, The Cumberland Arms, The Globe, The Lubberfiend, The Lit and Phil and Glasshouse International Centre for Music.

We’ve commissioned Manon McCoy and Emmy Lambert to create our festival interludes, Jon Bradley will make two performances at the historic Edith Adamson Carillon, and two great workshops lined up with Rachel Musson and Free The Aanimals.

It’s an absolutely fantastic programme with so many twists and turns, can’t wait to see you there!

As ever we feature an explosive mix of experimental and improvised music alongside some of the best contemporary jazz around.

Regular Portishead collaborators Get The Blessing are welcomed, this time with Radiohead regular Clive Deamer being replaced by Dave Smith, best known for his six years touring and recording with Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters. Sharing the bill will be the delectable art-pop sounds of Dilettante.

Adam Fairhall and Johnny Hunter bring their swinging tribute to Mary Lou Williams downstairs atthe legendary Cumberland Arms, and there’s a soft launch planned for the new album by John Pope Quintet, one of five releases coinciding with the festival through side hustle New Jazz and Improvised Music Recordings.

Internationally acclaimed Alex Hitchcock Quartet join us for a regular Sunday night jazz session at The Globe to close the festivals opening weekend.

Regular partners the South Asian GemArts organisation support us in promoting Arun Ghosh, Zoe Rahman, Urvashi and New Ways of Moving in the Counterworlds. Counterworlds also feature in the BBC Introducing From The Glasshouse programme with return visits from Helen Anahita Wilson and Juliana Day with Manon McCoy.

New to the festival this year is the DIY arts venue space Lubberfiend whose suggestion of the incredible Valentina Magaletti is to be complemented with the brand new duo of Steve Malley and Raymond MacDonald of Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra.

For our opening event at the festival’s spiritual home of the Lit and Phil, Alison Gill performs George Crumb’s Makrokosmos Book 1.

Andy Champion returns for one of his spellbinding double bass and electronics sets, joined by the compelling Zoë GIlby and Johnny Hunter voice and drums duo, having performed their first live dates in this pairing around the UK earlier this year.

Jeppe Zeeberg will be visiting us from Copenhagen to play one of his devastating solo piano shows, whilst accordionist Zbigniew Chojnacki will visit from Poland to play in an exclusive trio alongside Manon McCoy on harp and John Pope on double bass.

On Saturday we also see a rare outing from the Laura Cole driven Anemone Quartet, the night climaxes with the spiritual jazz sounds of Harper Trio, a rare Northern solo set from Alexander Hawkins, and closing with the powerhouse Olie Brice Quartet.

Our closing concert on Sunday afternoon will feature three acts who all feature in this years Jazz North artist development programme Ceitidh Mac, ATFK and Rivkala.

Baiana is the Brazilian influenced project fronted by charismatic vocalist Laura Doyle, who has been winning fans across the country with her unique blend Latin jazz fusion. Singing in both Portuguese and English, Laura evokes a vocal style reminiscent of the great romantic torch singers of the 40s and 50s and the Brazilian greats such as Elza Soares and Gal Costa, singing of lost love and broken hearts.
Described as “The band we are all obsessed about” by 6 Music DJ Deb Grant, Baiana were a hugely popular draw at Love Supreme and Ealing Jazz festival, opened for Brazilian mega star Gilberto Gil on his UK tour, were awarded “Album of the week” on Jazz FM as well as spending and unprecedented 25 weeks collectively on the station’s A-List with three of their breakthrough tracks.

We’re delighted to welcome back drummer, composer and proprietor of Brighton’s award-winning Verdict Jazz Club Tristan Banks, following his first appearance with us in April 2023 on the album launch tour for ‘View From Above’, released on Ubuntu Music.
Tristan draws on over 30 years of experience as a sideman for many grammy award winning and multi-platinum selling artists (Roy Ayers, Steve Winwood, Dave Valentin, David Gilmour, Beverley Knight, Hexagonal, Peter King, Lewis Taylor, Guy Barker, Marcos Valle, Liane Carroll, Mike Lindup, Terry Callier, Da Lata, Jim Mullen, Carleen Anderson and Mayra Andrade). Since he was last with us, he has toured globally with Steve Winwood and James Mason.
Mixing influences from jazz, Latin and fusion, the Tristan Banks Quartet features Latin-jazz piano sensation John Crawford and bassist Davide Mantovani. This will be Davide’s fourth appearance, having returned with Minas Project in January 2026 and the Neil Angilley Trio in September and will be making his fifth appearance with Baiana in November. This performance will also feature the UK’s premier jazz flautist Gareth Lockrane.

We’re really excited to welcome rising star trumpeter Klara Devlin back to The Marr’s Bar for what will be her third appearance, having made her Worcester debut with the Miranda Radford quartet in February 2025 and returning with the phenomenal 8-piece Ankora a year later. This time she brings her own quartet, featuring Chris Outhwaite (keys), Tom Sheen (bass) and Emmanuel Ampong (drums).
Klara was a 2024 BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist, currently studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music. She began playing trumpet at five and discovered jazz at eight. Her quartet, formed through Tomorrow’s Warriors, performs her original compositions and arrangements inspired by bebop, blues and free jazz. The Klara Devlin Quartet has appeared across numerous jazz venues and festivals, including The Jazz Café, Jazz In The Round, Pizza Express Soho, JazzLive at the Crypt and performances at the Brick Lane, We Out Here and Brecon Jazz festivals.

One of the U.K.’s finest jazz singers Beverley Beirne will be returning as part of York’s Theatre Royal Jazz Programme on Saturday 10th October.

Beverley has performed at leading clubs throughout the UK and Europe including Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Jazz Club, 606 Club, The Stables (Cleo Laine’s prestigious venue), Gregory’s in Rome and Venice Jazz Club, and headlined at Marsden Jazz Festival and Limerick Jazz Festival with her band of leading U.K. musicians.

Dream Dancer, Beverley’s latest album was in the long-list for The Grammy’s Best Jazz Vocal Album and received multiple 4* reviews. ‘Old Brazil’ from the album, written by saxophone legend Duncan Lamont originally as the theme to the 70s children’s programme Mr. Benn, was at #no2 in the Roots Charts in the states for several weeks. The album focuses on her original takes on songs of hope, passion, of living life to the full, of day dreaming, regret, love lost and love found and ultimately of dancing through the game and rhythm of life. The album was produced by Grammy-winning NY producer Jason Miles (Luther Vandross, Miles Davis, Sting).

The material contains some of the finest songs and song-writers in the jazz repertoire and beyond, such as the little known ‘Reaching For The Moon,’ by the great Irving Berlin featuring double bass and ‘Grandma’s Hands’ by Bill Withers, highlighting both Beverley’s comparison to Anita O’Day and Cleo Lane. True to form, Beverley also includes original interpretations such as David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance,’ and a crowd pleasing bluesy version of The Clash’s ‘Should stay or Should I go.’

Beverley will also include original songs from U.K. legend Duncan Lamont and a preview of some of Beverley’s own compositions due to be recorded next year for her fourth studio album.

Producer Jason Miles (Miles Davis, Luther Vandross, Sting) says, “Beverley has one of those voices that you can keep on listening to. I just don’t hear many jazz singers today like her.”

Full Biography

Abbie is a drummer from the North-East, who gained a 1st Class Degree in Jazz from Leeds Conservatoire and a Masters degree from Trinity Laban in London. Her current main projects are her Trio and the Finn-Keeble Group. She performs with a range of other bands, and is a regular drummer for artists visiting the area including Vasilis Xenopoulos, Andrea Vicari, Alan Barnes, Art Themen, Greg Abate and more. Abbie had a feature in Jazzwise, and was dubbed the ‘one to watch this month’ and a ‘crucial member of the thriving North-East scene.’ She has released four albums to date with her trio, who have been dubbed ‘Exceptional British Jazz’ by Chris Phillips of Jazz FM. Alongside jazz, Abbie performed live in 2018 in the Jamie Lloyd production of ‘Pinter Four: Moonlight/Night School’ as part of the prestigious Pinter at the Pinter season on London’s West End. “Abbie Finn’s impeccable drumming is vivifying” - Marissa Khaos_TheUpComing.

Harry, originally from East Sussex, is known for a strong tone and style, he cites a wide array of inspirations from Joe Henderson, to Coltrane, through to Chris Potter and Allan Holdsworth. He is the saxophonist for the Finn-Keeble Group, Abbie Finn Trio, Russ Morgan Quartet, Zoe Gilby Quintet, and has performed with some of the finest musicians in the UK and beyond, including Alan Barnes, Andrea Vicari, Art Themen, Greg Abate, and others. Harry was described as “A remarkably versatile and assured musician” by the Jazz Mann. He runs the Harry Keeble Quartet, who have their first full album in the works, after their highly successful E.P. ‘The Beacon’.

They are joined by highly regarded musicians Dean Stockdale and John Pope.
Dean continues to be in demand as a performer with his trio and quartet, and as pianist for touring jazz artists, accompanist for vocalists and as a teacher and session pianist. 2021 saw the release of his second trio album entitled ‘Promise the Moon’. His latest release ‘Celebrating Oscar’ features new quartet arrangements of Oscar Peterson’s rarely heard compositions and new arrangements.
John is an artist with a diverse and expansive creative practice, who currently composes and leads his own chordless jazz quintet, as well as being one third of garage-jazz trio Archipelago. He has performed and collaborated with artists including Roger Turner, Mick Beck, Rhodri Davies, Greg Spero, Field Music, Anton Hunter, Chris Biscoe, Joe McPhee, Laura Cole and many others.

Benn was active in the London Music Scene in the 1970’s and was a protégé of Ronnie Scott. He moved to L.A. California in 1980 where he is now based. He was recommended for Horace Silver’s band and recordings followed. Having skills as a multi-instrumentalist (tenor, alto, baritone sax, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet) he has carved a career in the L.A music scene. He has worked with a huge array of class A musicians from the LA Philharmonic Orchestra to Cab Calloway. However, his main passion is playing Tenor Sax in a quartet setting – and his approach is unique. Playing from the songbook of Blue Note and more contemporary jazz, his tone is extraordinarily beautiful, and his melodic ideas come from the heart. As someone said recently ‘It’s as though he’s talking to us and telling us a story through the saxophone!’
Benn is joined by Alex Hutton (piano), Simon Thorpe (bass) and Matt Home (drums).
Alex Hutton is an established pianist on the London Jazz scene. Over the past 10 years, he has worked with most of the leading figures including Jim Mullen, Pete King and more. He began playing piano at the age of five. After completing a BA Hons degree in American studies, he turned his focus fully to jazz piano – winning praise from the late Ronnie Scott.
Simon Thorpe has worked with many of the great UK and US names in jazz, recording and touring. Outside the jazz sphere he has played with artists as diverse as Amy Winehouse, Imelda Staunton, Alexander Armstrong, Mica Paris, Sean McGowan, Rick Astley and more. He writes the music arrangements for Mitch Winehouse’s 7-piece band and he has also been a composer. Simon has written music for theatre, jazz ensembles, BBC TV and BAFTA award winning short film Wedding Espresso.
Matt Home was born in West Yorkshire. He started playing drums at the age of eight. After taking private lessons, he enrolled on a course in Jazz and popular music, graduating in 1994. He soon began playing professionally in Leeds, before moving to London. Matt has played with many of the leading musicians in London, UK and Europe including Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen and more. He has played with many US artists and has played in clubs, theatres and jazz festivals.

The Songs Of Satchmo and Sinatra is an intimate, heartwarming celebration of two musical legends who shaped the golden age of jazz and swing : Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong.
Denny Ilett is a self-confessed ‘Sinatraphile’ who has performed his personal take on the music of Frank Sinatra at festivals and clubs across the UK, Europe, the US and Australia.
Enrico Tomasso is an acclaimed trumpeter and vocalist who was personally mentored by Louis Armstrong in the late 1960s. From the great man, Enrico learned lessons that he continues to bring to every performance.

Nick Tomalin formed his ‘Shades of Shearing’ Quintet in 2021 to celebrate the remarkable musical legacy of iconic British-born, blind-from-birth, jazz pianist George Shearing. The band features the same line-up as his classic quintet which captured the imagination of fans world-wide with hit recordings like ‘September in the Rain’, ‘Conception’ and ‘Lullaby of Birdland’.
As a Guildhall School of Music student in 1994, Nick enjoyed the thrilling opportunity to feature in a televised masterclass with George Shearing himself.
Nick has been working as a professional jazz pianist in London for nearly thirty years. His tasteful bebop-inspired piano style has made him a regular on the London scene and he’s worked with some of the biggest names in UK jazz including Jim Mullen, Mark Lockheart, Alan Barnes, Stan Sulzman among many others.

We start the new season with the fantastic Five-Way Split, featuring their 2026 album, “Modus Operandi”. The band has been playing together since 2020 and as is the case with jazz musicians, they have developed the understanding that makes a brilliant experience for us jazz fans. May 2024 was the last time at Progress and Trevor Bannister’s review of the gig ended; “The band launched into a blues. It was ‘All hands to the pumps’ as the excitement mounted for the grand finale – blistering solos, high speed exchanges, dramatic top notes … still the audience called ‘more!”. Nothing less is anticipated in 2026.
The new album contains original compositions from Rob Barron, Quentin Collins and Vasilis Xenopoulos alongside arrangements of tunes by Henry Mancini, Jimmy Van Heusen. Most compositions are of the rousing “hard bop” variety, if one has to use such terms. However, whatever term you use, a guaranteed night of great jazz is assured.
A final quote from The Jazzmann who attended the band’s London Jazz Festival gig in November 2025, when they played tunes from the yet to be released “Modus Operandi”.
“This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, the quality of the playing and the enthusiasm of the audience combining to create an unforgettable atmosphere”.

Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s near 40 year collaboration is one of the most consequential in the history of jazz music.

The two had an uncanny symbiosis that sometimes verged on telepathy. Normally, the shy Strayhorn worked tirelessly in the background while the debonair Ellington performed in the limelight for audiences worldwide.

While the pair had already coproduced innumerable master works prior to 1960’s Nutcracker Suite, the release of this album marked the first time that Strayhorn appeared on the cover of an Ellington album. He is center stage, seated next to the maestro and smiling serenely.

In retrospect, Strayhorn had come up with the idea for the project and had arranged much of the music so it made sense to have his name in bright lights on the cover. However, this is the first public suggestion that Ellington was not the sole architect of his works.

This album is another first for Ellington as it represents the first time he had re-orchestrated the work of a major classical composer. He and Strayhorn adapt Tchaikovsky’s themes perfectly into the Ellingtonian swing style. There are bombastic full band performances in “Peanut Briddle Brigade” contrasted with the sparse and mysterious “Sugar Rum Cherry” and “Chinoiserie”. It is such a work of genius that you might even end up preferring it to the original.

This evenings performance will also feature Smith’s original compositions and other rarities from Ellington and the big band canon.

This time we’ll be gathering for an early evening Sunday concert, beginning around 4:30pm and concluding before 9:30pm. A little later than our usual matinees, but still allowing plenty of time to ease gently into the working week ahead.

There’s something rather special about Sunday evenings. The weekend begins to slow, the pace softens, and there’s an opportunity to pause before the demands of Monday arrive. It feels like the perfect setting for the music we have planned.

I’m particularly excited about this one and delighted to finally share the details with newsletter subscribers before the public announcement tomorrow.

Originally from Japan and now based in London, cellist, singer and composer midori jaeger brings her (Re)planted EP Launch to Shrewsbury with her full band.

Drawing on influences from jazz, folk, contemporary classical music and electronics, midori creates immersive and deeply personal songs exploring themes of identity, belonging and place.

Her new double EP, (Re)planted, reflects on a childhood spent across multiple continents and the challenge of establishing roots in unfamiliar landscapes. Written at the cello—an instrument crafted from a once-living tree—the songs draw poignant parallels between the natural world and the human search for home, connection and self.
I’m delighted to announce that our next event will take place in October in the beautiful Darwin Room.

A genre-defying artist and collaborator, midori has performed with Imogen Heap, Courtney Pine, Daughter, Patrick Watson, Jessie Ware and Tanita Tikaram. Alongside her work as a performer, she also composes for film, dance and theatre.

Hi,

I hope the start of summer is being kind to you and that you’ve been finding time to enjoy some of the gifts that come with this wonderful season of growth.

This newsletter is a little shorter than usual in some respects and rather longer in others. There are a few headlines about upcoming gigs, alongside a longer passage of reflection.

Sorry about that.

As many of you will know, these newsletters occasionally become a form of public journaling. Writing them helps me process things and, perhaps, may resonate with some of you too.

If reflections on mental wellbeing, self-doubt and the occasional wander through my inner landscape aren’t quite your bag, and I completely respect that they won’t be for everyone, please feel free to skip ahead and land on the recommendations and gig news section instead.

Early sell out - Event 4.0
First off, there are only a couple of tickets remaining for Event 4.0 on September 13th, a special matinee performance with Haiku Salut, Osgeld and Matt Sewell.

Being on the verge of an early sell-out is a welcome surprise. It’s been quite a while since that happened, and I’m genuinely grateful.

Moments like this are a reminder that there are people who continue to value these shared experiences and the opportunity to discover something a little different. Music that sits outside the mainstream. Music for the curious.

It’s also a reminder that community matters.

Behind every ticket sale is someone choosing to support independent artists, volunteer-led events, historic spaces and the idea that quality niche culture doesn’t only belong in cities or large venues.

Cornish double bassist and composer Marcus Penrose left the wild Atlantic coast for the bustle of London aged just 18. His trio, Aurelius grew from a long-standing musical bond with pianist Will Butterworth, forged twenty years ago in a smoky West London bar where they played together six nights a week. Performing there to the likes of Mick Jagger, Madonna, and Annie Lennox, along with pilgrimages to hear Paul Motian in mid-2000s New York shaped their jazz education. These experiences echo through the music of Aurelius, as they seek out beauty within the corners of their improvisations. Joined by kindred spirit drummer Peter Ibbetson, they embrace a sense of limitless musical possibility.

Sitar star Niladri Kumaar is a musical maverick, redefining the classical Indian sound for the next generation. In this concert, he pays tribute to his friend, mentor and frequent collaborator, the late tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. Before Hussain’s passing, the sitar-tabla duo was captured in the wonderful 2017 documentary The Space Between the Notes. At 88, Lloyd has a lifetime of achievements to look back on — but looking back isn’t his style. He’s forever moving forward, earning his crown again and again as “one of America’s most influential, experimental and spiritual musicians” (Memphis Music Hall of Fame). Over his career, he has played everything (free jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, world music, psychedelia) with everyone (B.B. King, Cannonball Adderley, Jimi Hendrix and Brian Wilson, just to name a few). Among his many accolades, he won DownBeat’s 2024 quadruple crown: Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Tenor Saxophonist of the Year and Hall of Fame.

NJPAC continues Dorthaan’s Place, its popular Sunday jazz brunch series at NICO Kitchen + Bar curated by Newark’s First Lady of Jazz, Dorthaan Kirk. The series made its debut during NJPAC’s 2012-13 season and has grown ever since. This edition presents the bold, forward-looking sound of electrifying young trumpeter Wallace Roney Jr., leading his Quartet. He comes from a renowned jazz family — his parents are late jazz luminaries Wallace Roney and Geri Allen. His quartet explores the music of Miles Davis, with fearlessly fresh improvisational talent.

The divine Sarah Vaughan—Newark’s greatest musical gift to the world—got her start as the winner of a talent contest. NJPAC honors her legacy every year with the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, the only global jazz vocal contest of its kind, open to all genders and nationalities. This event offers outstanding jazz singers a one-of-a-kind platform for embarking on a career in the music business—and offers audience members a chance to discover the jazz stars of tomorrow. For this 15th annual “The SASSY Awards” event, WBGO Radio’s Gary Walker will host and 2024 SVVC winner April May Webb will perform. A panel of all-star judges—Jose James, Gretchen Parlato, Jason Olaine, Lillias White, and T.S. Monk—will select the winner. The Academy Award–winning Uruguayan singer and composer Jorge Drexler has announced he will return to London to perform at The Roundhouse on Tuesday October 27, 2026 as part of his international “TARACÁ” tour.

The show follows the arrival of Drexler’s new album TARACÁ, released in March 2026, which marks a new creative chapter in his career. On the album, Drexler returns to musical roots that have shaped his artistic identity while continuing to expand his sonic palette, with the Afro-Uruguayan rhythm of candombe running throughout the record.

Where Light Settles is Myra’s first self-produced album, with Matthew Halsall contributing as producer. Although Tommy is influenced by the mainstream jazz tradition of Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner, his music also has elements of latin grooves and classical composition.
