DeRungs is an emerging artist with plenty to say, a supremely accomplished pianist and also the visionary force behind this varied and very impressive album.
A composer of considerable intelligence who deploys his wide range of influences subtly and skilfully. The standard of playing from an all star band is exceptional throughout.
Her compositions are intelligent and evocative and her arrangements and orchestrations rich, wide ranging and colourful, allowing Davies to bring out the best from her hand picked cast of musicians.
“Catching Fire” is an appropriate title and captures the core trio and their illustrious collaborator at their best, the music a perfect amalgam of technical prowess and sheer visceral energy.
His writing is intelligent and varied and he is well served by the playing of an exceptional sextet who interpret his ideas with skill and panache.
