Esperanza Spalding wins the 2016 MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act.

It was announced last night that Esperanza Spalding has been awarded the MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act. The American bassist and singer was up against some of the most exciting names in contemporary jazz, including Snarky Puppy’s Cory Henry and Bill Laurance, British prodigy Jacob Collier and bassist Michael Janisch.

The MOBO Awards stands to recognize the outstanding achievements of artists in musical genres ranging from soul and reggae to hip hop, grime, afrobeats and jazz. It is one of the world’s leading urban music brands and now in its 21st year, the awards are a celebration of top musical and cultural achievements.

Esperanza burst onto the international scene in 2011 when she defied the odds to win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, beating off competition from Justin Bieber, Drake and Florence and the Machine. She has since gone on to win a further three Grammy Awards, performed at the Nobel Prize Ceremony and the White House, and played with Prince and Herbie Hancock among others.

With seven collaborative and five solo albums under her belt, Esperanza Spalding has resolutely, intuitively, deftly expanded upon both her art and herself as a world-renowned genre-bending composer, bassist and vocalist.

“Does anyone sing quite so exquisitely as Grammy-winning Esperanza Spalding?”
