Violinist and vocalist Dominic Ingham and pianist Jay Verma bring a fresh perspective to the classic violin-and-piano duo, performing a seamless blend of jazz, Scottish and Irish folk, and ‘modern-day lullabies’ (Jazz Mann).
Yorkshire-born violinist and vocalist Dominic Ingham is ‘fast establishing himself as one of the UK’s leading proponents of jazz violin’ (Jazzwise), following the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Role Models. The record presents a compelling suite of lucidly crafted, characterful pieces that showcase Dominic’s distinctive and highly personal style, deeply rooted in folk and classical traditions. He has toured extensively across the UK with his quartet, performing at renowned venues and festivals including Ronnie Scott’s, Love Supreme, the Royal Albert Hall, and the EFG London Jazz Festival. Recent collaborations include Emma Rawicz, Trish Clowes, and Elliot Galvin. In 2020, Dominic was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Award for Jazz Newcomer and was a finalist in the prestigious Zbigniew Seifert International Jazz Violin Competition. He currently teaches jazz violin at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Jay Verma is a distinguished pianist and composer based in London. Known for his deep sensitivity to harmony and his distinctive blend of influences drawn from Jazz, Folk, Romantic, and Film music, Jay brings a uniquely personal voice to the instrument. He has performed, toured, and recorded with acclaimed artists including Ganavya, Sault, Cleo Sol, Immanuel Wilkins, and Sam Amidon, among others.

‘Guesde (pronounced “gesht”) are a North London jazz fusion band blending Indian classical music, jazz, and London sounds like drum & bass and grime into something raw and unique. At the centre of what Guesde does is experimentation - keeping the energy of rehearsal alive in performance, where things can shift, stretch, or fall apart completely, driving sounds through a live effects processing unit that takes sound in real time and mangles it into something new. Their live shows lean into performance art, featuring mirror masks made by artist Freddie Yauner. Their influences span the legacies of Shakti, King Crimson, Arthur Russell and Wayne Shorter, while also pulling from contemporary artists like Dijon, Wayne Krantz, and Tigran Hamasyan. They’ve been played on Maria Grapsa’s East of the Sun on One Jazz Radio and by Karl Bos on Soho Radio, and have performed at venues including MAP Studio Cafe, Hampstead Jazz Club, and The Elephant’s Head.

Sam Glaser is an alto saxophonist, composer and bandleader based in London, UK. He is a virtuosic improviser and a unique voice on the UK jazz scene, and his warm and distinctive saxophone sound, paired with lyrical, energetic, and emotive playing, have led to renown amongst musicians and listeners alike. Sam’s saxophone playing is firmly grounded in the history of jazz music but takes great inspiration from modern masters including Will Vinson, Chris Potter, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Ben Wendel. Sam graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2016 with a 1st class honours degree in jazz saxophone, where he studied with some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians including Julian Siegel, Iain Ballamy, Nikki Iles, James Allsopp, Gareth Lockrane, and Tom Cawley. He was also a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra between 2013 and 2018, where he held the principle alto chair for two years and during which time performed with artists including Gregory Porter, Clare Teal, Zoe Rahman, and Jason Yarde. He was also a featured soloist on the studio album “NYJO 50”, released on Whirlwind Records in 2015. Highly sought after, Sam has performed with leading musicians and bands including the Tom Smith big band, Patchwork Jazz Orchestra, the Gareth Lockrane Big Bang, Adam Woodcock’s Meridian, and the Tom Niblock big band. He was a featured soloist on Stan Sulzmann’s “Mon Ami”, released in 2021, and recorded for Slowly Rolling Camera on their record “Juniper”, released on Edition Records in 2018.

Jazzwise Magazine praises her work as “avant-garde for all,” and critic Kevin Le Gendre notes she “shows notable strength of character as she runs the sonic and emotional gamut.” Keeffe’s debut album, Right Here, Right Now (Discus Music, 2021), marked her emergence as a distinctive voice in the UK and international avant-garde scenes. Her 2023 follow-up, ALIVE! in the studio, captures the visceral immediacy of RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW - featuring Ashley John Long (double bass), Ben Handysides (drums), and Moss Freed (guitar) - recorded live at Goldsmiths University Studios. The album was featured in several Best of 2023 lists, including Reader’s Digest. Keeffe’s music has been widely broadcast across BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 6 Music, and Jazz FM, with presenters such as Corey Mwamba, Stuart Maconie, and Jez Nelson describing her as “prolific,” “dynamic,” and “an excellent improviser!” A passionate advocate for music as a force for social change, Charlotte served as Assistant Musical Director of the London Gay Big Band, and co-leads its All-Women Septet alongside her fiancée, vocalist Lara de Belder. From intimate solo sets in abstract spaces and bustling cityscapes, to high-profile stages at Glastonbury and Wilderness Festival alongside Charlotte Church, Laura Mvula, and Kate Nash, Keeffe is a fearless creative spirit. Based in London, jazz vocalist and composer Sylvie Noble pulls from eclectic influences across the musical spectrum, combining jazz and folk to create an entirely unique sound. A finalist of the 2025 Tina May Young Jazz Musician competition and anchored by a love for improvisation, her sound is steeped in sensitive honesty, technical virtuosity, and captivating storytelling.  Her most recent project, Sylvie + Ursula, is a duo collaboration with double bassist Ursula Harrison, winner of the BBC Young Jazz Musician Award 2024. Sylvie is a member of the London Vocal Project, one of the UK’s leading contemporary vocal ensembles, and has performed and toured with musicians such as Ant Law and Tom Ollendorff, in settings from Pizza Express Live to Brecon, Sligo and Limerick Jazz Festivals. She toured the UK with The Mingus Project in 2024, with whom she released a live album.  As a performer and arranger, Sylvie was commissioned by the Wales Millennium Centre to reimagine the repertoire of the iconic Welsh post-punk band Young Marble Giants within a jazz context, through innovative and experimental arrangements. A budding writer, Sylvie has written for UK Jazz News, interviewing Belgian vocalist Lynn Cassiers for a preview written on behalf of the Royal Academy of Music. Sylvie teaches at various jazz summer-schools, such as Sligo Jazz and the Original UK Jazz summer-school, and is pursuing a Postgraduate degree in jazz studies at the Royal Academy of Music, after graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music with a first-class BMus degree in jazz voice.

Airborn is the new project led by flutist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Eddie Parker. A founder member of the acclaimed British jazz orchestra Loose Tubes, Parker’s early career led him to collaborate with many future musical luminaries including Django Bates, John Parricelli, Iain Ballamy and many more. Many will know Eddie’s work in the 1990s with South African piano genius Bheki Mseleku. Eddie is also a regular member of the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble. More recently, his Debussy Mirrored Ensemble have gained much positive attention for their unique compositions and performances. Speaking about his fellow musicians in Airborn, Eddie Parker says: “They teach me something new whenever I play with them and interact with them. And Rob? I run out of superlatives! Bassist Han Beyli performs original music and reimagined covers spanning jazz, pop, and R&B. Armando Lopez
Armando Lopez is a Miami-based drummer, producer, and composer. He is a member of the fusion quartet Electric Kif, alongside bassist Rodrigo Zambrano, keyboardist Jason Matthews, and guitarist Eric Escanes. Lopez has toured with the Roosevelt Collier Band, Cris Cab, ArtOfficial, and the Nu Deco Ensemble, and served three seasons as house-band drummer for the Emmy-winning television series La Voz. He has arranged for and performed with Ben Folds, Cory Henry, Jacob Collier, Emily King, Angelique Kidjo, Tune-Yards, Kishi Bashi, Macy Gray, Aaron Parks, NuDeco Ensemble, among others. Danish-born Brighton resident Sara Oschlag has quietly established herself as is one of the UK’s premier jazz vocalists. She is a regular performer at leading jazz festivals and venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, Love Supreme Festival, Jazz at The Lincoln Center and Pizza Express, has sung at events all across Europe, and has built up a YouTube presence of over 12 million views. Equally at home in the role of band leader as she is as a much in-demand special guest, she has recently appeared as featured vocalist with the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, Pete Long’s Echoes of Ellington Big Band and Arnie Somogyi’s Scenes in The City Band, and duetted with US trumpet/vocal star Benny Benack III for Brighton Jazz Festival.

An exciting and inventive saxophonist, Art Themen has been an appealing presence on the British jazz circuit for over 60 years. A previous winner of the tenor sax category in the British Jazz Awards, recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians and shortlisted for the Jazz Instrumentalist of the year in the recent Parliamentary Jazz Awards, this living legend has famously combined his role as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with saxophone duties in the bands of Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey as well as recordings with Joe Cocker, Jack Bruce and even Bing Crosby. Described by THE OBSERVER as “One of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians”, he remains as brilliant and inimitable as ever. midori jaeger is a cellist and songwriter originally from Japan. She headlines Stone Nest with an intimate and captivating performance to launch her new EP (Re)planted with a band.

(Re)planted and her previous EP (Un)planted draw upon a childhood spent across multiple continents and an adulthood geographically separated from family, exploring themes of displacement, belonging, heritage, and solace found in creative expression. The songs were written at the cello, an instrument that was once a living tree. The cello and the songs together draw poignant parallels between the natural world and the human search for home, and self.

Rare live outing for guitar legend Louis Stewart’s Joyce Notes

First performance in over thirty years

Dublin-based Livia Records celebrates the release of legendary guitarist Louis Stewart’s Joyce Notes with a live performance of the album featuring leading Irish drummer Conor Guilfoyle’s septet and actor Barry McGovern at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin on Thursday 3rd September.

Commissioned for Cork Jazz Festival in 1982, Joyce Notes is a six-part suite based on scenes from James Joyce’s groundbreaking novel, Ulysses. It was premiered by Stewart, with an all-star Irish-American octet and narration by Irish character actor Eamon Morrissey, but was only performed twice more, once in Oslo with a local band and Norwegian text, and once in Dublin in 1993.

The original performance was filmed for television and Dermot Rogers, the radio presenter who has reactivated Livia Records, had the recording remastered and released it as part of the series of Louis Stewart albums he began reissuing in 2022.

Despite Stewart, who died in 2016, being regarded more for his interpretational and soloing skills than his composing talents during his career, the music he produced for Joyce Notes has been praised internationally.

Jazzwise magazine gave the album four stars. The Irish Times enthused: “It’s as if Louis Stewart and James Joyce were kindred spirits”. And Jazz Journal described Joyce Notes as “a bold, adventurous work that’s fully the equal of Stan Tracey’s Under Milk Wood as an example of jazz meets modern literature”.

For this latest performance, which is presented in association with The James Joyce Centre, Dublin, Conor Guilfoyle, who studied at New York’s Drummers Collective, will lead the band and Barry McGovern, an actor with extensive experience of Joyce’s works, will deliver the scenes from Ulysses.

“It’s been really rewarding to see the positive response to Joyce Notes the album,” says Dermot Rogers. “The music stands up really well more than forty years since its conception and I’m looking forward to hearing the cast of 2026 bringing the Joyce Notes experience to life.”

Jazz pianist Eddie Gripper, who organises Jazz at The Merryfellow (previously held at The Suffolk Arms), will be hosting on the first Merryfellow Jazz Festival this weekend, with six performances at the restaurant and bar in the Charlton Kings area of Cheltenham across the two days.

Saturday’s line-up starts at 1pm with saxophonist Daniel Newberry and his trio from Bristol playing a mix of funk, groove and soul. At 3:45, guitarist Chris Cobbson will be taking the audience on a journey from South Africa to Senegal, drawing on his Ghanaian heritage. The day closes out with guitarist Nigel Price, joined by the Merryfellow house band, at 6:30pm.

On Sunday, acoustic duo Dafne from South Wales get things rolling at 1pm with the folk-jazz sounds of Joni Mitchell and John Martyn. Full House follows at 3:45 with a homage to the New Orleans brass tradition complete with big bass drum and sousaphone! Vocalist Elijah Jeffery wraps the weekend up singing from the timeless songbooks of Nat King Cole and Mel Torme, from 6:30pm.

BMJ is delighted to host Roger Beaujolais’ Spin Quartet on our opening night of thewall2wall Jazz Festival!
Roger is a player that one could look to in defining the word ‘virtuosic’; his ability is ferocious - but this doesn’t at all mean that he can’t also coax beautiful harmonies and sweet melodies from the instrument!
He is one of only a few vibes players that has really mastered the art of playing with four mallets. Roger’s ability on the vibraphone, coupled with his consummate musicianship has led him to an international career which has been (and continues to be) both varied and prolific in its output.
His own projects have ranged from Acid Jazz to straight-ahead, and he has been hired toper form or record with such diverse A-listers as Robert Plant, Morrissey, Kirsty MacColl and Snowboy. In the jazz field, Roger has worked with almost everybody at the top of the UK jazz scene and currently leads a top-notch trio based in Italy.
This particular line up was born earlier this year, at a sold out show at The Spin Jazz Club in Oxford, Joining Roger for this performance will be Pete Oxley on Guitar (Hejira, Oxley Meier Guitar Project), Andy Hamill on Bass (Laura Mvula, Van Morrison), and Alex Goodyear on drums (Yetii, Jon Lloyd, John Law).

As a third generation musician, jazz and blues are deeply rooted in Olivia Cuttill’s heritage. She is heavily influenced by the sounds of New Orleans and inspired by Louis Armstrong and Dr John, as well as the story-telling of Nina Simone and Randy Newman. Her approach to composition, story-telling and improvisation seamlessly bleed into one, gleaming with conviction, character and captivation.
Since graduating from Leeds Conservatoire in 2023, Olivia Cuttill has released two albums -her latest was ‘The Whole Damn Plan’ in 2024. She has toured the UK and Europe, playing esteemed venues such as Ronnie Scotts, Howard Assembly Room, South Bank Centre and Duc Des Lombards.
Jazzwise describes Olivia as ‘one of the best new trumpeters to emerge on the British jazz scene over the past decade’.

Alongside songs from their much-loved 2020 album ‘Weathering The Storm’, the duo will perform stripped-back interpretations from across their wider catalogues - as well as new material currently being written and recorded for their forthcoming album ‘Lighthouses’, planned for release in 2027.
Weathering The Storm was met with rapturous reviews on release. The Guardian awarded the album four stars, calling it “a gem… simple, modest and perfect,” while Iggy Pop described it as “unimaginably good” on his BBC Radio 6 Music show.
At the heart of this partnership is a shared commitment to understatement, space and emotional truth. Voice and guitar are given room to breathe, allowing the songs to unfold with clarity and intimacy - qualities that have come to define their work together.
Jo Harrop is an award-winning singer, songwriter and recording artist whose work effortlessly blurs the lines between jazz, blues and soul, with subtle influences of Americana, folk and Latin music.

Jamie McCredie is one of the UK’s finest solo guitarists and busiest session musicians.
After winning BBC Radio Guitarist of the Year at the age of 19, he established himself as a distinctive voice on the instrument, blending fiery blues-inflected jazz with deep classical knowledge and exceptional technical facility.
He has appeared on some of the world’s largest stages - including Glastonbury, Coachella, Montreux and the North Sea Jazz Festival - as well as at intimate venues such as Ronnie Scott’s and Cadogan Hall.
He has toured and recorded extensively around the world, working with a diverse range of artists including James Morrison, Roísin Murphy, Emeli Sandé, Will Young, Joss Stone, Beverly Knight, Kid Creole, Tokio Myers, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Robbie Williams, K.T. Tunstall, Steps, and on numerous film, television and radio sessions.

WOMEN IN PERFORMANCE AT BRECON JAZZ FESTIVAL 1984-2025

Viewed through the lens of many dedicated photographers, jazz supporters and professionals, with over five decades of performance captured to date, this exhibition
celebrates music-making by women at Brecon Jazz Festival (BJF). Behind the images, whether on stage or on camera, lie countless hours of preparation, innovation and
commitment to their craft.

While recent decades have seen a truly visible increase in the presence of women as Festival headliners, and included in line-ups, Brecon Jazz always had diversity as a
touchstone, and ‘Jazz history’ itself (sometimes re-discovered) has included many outstanding individual female artists. The photographic legacy of ‘Brecon Jazz Festival’, these representations of collective moments and unforgettable performances, is produced by special people.

In this exhibition, we illustrate images produced by many BJF photographers, but note in particular the work of Brecon’s Gena Davies. Gena photographed every Brecon Jazz from its very first edition in 1984, up until 2024.

The exhibition also highlights an enduring jazz connection, between Wales and Holland. This began in the 1970s with visits to Breda by local jazz supporters, whose leading Festival brought musical links to Brecon, including the annual arrival in August of the ‘de Krukke’ marching band from the Netherlands. Thus also included are some remarkable portraits from Festival stages in Holland, taking during the 1950s-1960s of iconic jazz artists, by Dutch photographer Guusje de Zoete, who is now living in Wales.

This historic ‘Welsh-Dutch’ festival legacy and wider cultural links, the contribution of women to Festivals, representation of jazz in performance, are themes that Brecon Jazz Charity (CIO), in collaboration with partners, continues to explore and celebrate in public events and through archive collections.

This year’s Festival exhibition features a ‘roll call’ of women musicians who have performed at Brecon Jazz Festival. Now in its 43rd year, superb photography from across the decades and by a wide range of photographers is represented. This includes iconic portraits by Brecon’s own photography star, the late Gena Davies who was there from the very beginning of Brecon Jazz Festival in 1984 and had an extraordinary talent for capturing live performance. Also highlighted is the jazz connection between Wales and Holland, and the early work in the 1950s and 1960s of Dutch photographer Guusje de Zoete. Her lens captures legendary artists on festival stages in the Netherlands.  It is a delight to present a selection of Guusje’s photographs in this exhibition and for the first time in Wales, where she now lives.

Critically acclaimed Welsh keyboardist/composer Dave Jones and his newest band ‘Stratospheric’ play their own exciting brand of jazz-influenced progressive rock. The material is original Prog Rock, played by a line-up who are essentially jazz musicians that work in a broad range of musical styles.

‘Stratospheric’ has a great line-up (in fact more of a pool of musicians who share the gigs) including those musicians who were involved in recording at the very start of this project, alongside those who joined later for the first live performances in 2026. Between them all, their other work has seen them involved in performing/recording with e.g. Portishead, Jethro Tull, Toyah, Kasabian, Goldfrapp, and the late great rock and jazz session bassist Herbie Flowers.

We’re absolutely delighted to announce funding has been secured for Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music 2026 and gratefully acknowledge Arts Council England along with our partners and investors for their support. Tickets are now on sale.

More than 67 musicians will feature over 26 performances in 9 days across 7 of the region’s top music venues including Gosforth Civic Theatre, The Cluny, The Cumberland Arms, The Globe, The Lubberfiend, The Lit and Phil and Glasshouse International Centre for Music.

We’ve commissioned Manon McCoy and Emmy Lambert to create our festival interludes, Jon Bradley will make two performances at the historic Edith Adamson Carillon, and two great workshops lined up with Rachel Musson and Free The Aanimals.

It’s an absolutely fantastic programme with so many twists and turns, can’t wait to see you there!

As ever we feature an explosive mix of experimental and improvised music alongside some of the best contemporary jazz around.

Regular Portishead collaborators Get The Blessing are welcomed, this time with Radiohead regular Clive Deamer being replaced by Dave Smith, best known for his six years touring and recording with Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters. Sharing the bill will be the delectable art-pop sounds of Dilettante.

Adam Fairhall and Johnny Hunter bring their swinging tribute to Mary Lou Williams downstairs atthe legendary Cumberland Arms, and there’s a soft launch planned for the new album by John Pope Quintet, one of five releases coinciding with the festival through side hustle New Jazz and Improvised Music Recordings.

Internationally acclaimed Alex Hitchcock Quartet join us for a regular Sunday night jazz session at The Globe to close the festivals opening weekend.

Regular partners the South Asian GemArts organisation support us in promoting Arun Ghosh, Zoe Rahman, Urvashi and New Ways of Moving in the Counterworlds. Counterworlds also feature in the BBC Introducing From The Glasshouse programme with return visits from Helen Anahita Wilson and Juliana Day with Manon McCoy.

New to the festival this year is the DIY arts venue space Lubberfiend whose suggestion of the incredible Valentina Magaletti is to be complemented with the brand new duo of Steve Malley and Raymond MacDonald of Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra.

For our opening event at the festival’s spiritual home of the Lit and Phil, Alison Gill performs George Crumb’s Makrokosmos Book 1.

Andy Champion returns for one of his spellbinding double bass and electronics sets, joined by the compelling Zoë GIlby and Johnny Hunter voice and drums duo, having performed their first live dates in this pairing around the UK earlier this year.

Jeppe Zeeberg will be visiting us from Copenhagen to play one of his devastating solo piano shows, whilst accordionist Zbigniew Chojnacki will visit from Poland to play in an exclusive trio alongside Manon McCoy on harp and John Pope on double bass.

On Saturday we also see a rare outing from the Laura Cole driven Anemone Quartet, the night climaxes with the spiritual jazz sounds of Harper Trio, a rare Northern solo set from Alexander Hawkins, and closing with the powerhouse Olie Brice Quartet.

Our closing concert on Sunday afternoon will feature three acts who all feature in this years Jazz North artist development programme Ceitidh Mac, ATFK and Rivkala.

Baiana is the Brazilian influenced project fronted by charismatic vocalist Laura Doyle, who has been winning fans across the country with her unique blend Latin jazz fusion. Singing in both Portuguese and English, Laura evokes a vocal style reminiscent of the great romantic torch singers of the 40s and 50s and the Brazilian greats such as Elza Soares and Gal Costa, singing of lost love and broken hearts.

We’re really excited to welcome rising star trumpeter Klara Devlin back to The Marr’s Bar for what will be her third appearance, having made her Worcester debut with the Miranda Radford quartet in February 2025 and returning with the phenomenal 8-piece Ankora a year later. This time she brings her own quartet, featuring Chris Outhwaite (keys), Tom Sheen (bass) and Emmanuel Ampong (drums).
Klara was a 2024 BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist, currently studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music. She began playing trumpet at five and discovered jazz at eight. Her quartet, formed through Tomorrow’s Warriors, performs her original compositions and arrangements inspired by bebop, blues and free jazz. The Klara Devlin Quartet has appeared across numerous jazz venues and festivals, including The Jazz Café, Jazz In The Round, Pizza Express Soho, JazzLive at the Crypt and performances at the Brick Lane, We Out Here and Brecon Jazz festivals.

Full Biography

Mali Sheard is a London-based saxophonist, composer and bandleader whose music is rooted in melody, storytelling and a deep connection to the natural world. A graduate of Tomorrow’s Warriors, she developed her artistic voice under the guidance of mentors including Gary Crosby OBE and Binker Golding before continuing her studies on scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music with tutors Nikki Iles and Giacomo Smith.

Drawing inspiration from artists as diverse as Paul Desmond, Frank Sinatra, Brian Blade and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Mali has cultivated a lyrical, expressive sound that balances warmth, freedom and emotional honesty. Her compositions are deeply personal, reflecting her own experiences while inviting listeners into moments of reflection and optimism.

Her debut album, Hayfever, introduces an eclectic collection of original music inspired by the landscapes of her childhood in Hertfordshire and the Yorkshire Dales. Featuring field recordings of birdsong and rainfall captured in her local woodland, the album explores the idea that positive change can often arrive hand in hand with discomfort. Through vivid melodies, rich improvisation and evocative textures, Hayfever celebrates growth, resilience and the beauty of embracing life’s changing seasons.

Bass player, composer and arranger Ben Crosland has been an ever present force on the British jazz scene for over thirty-five years. Since the 1980s, he worked as a sideman, supporting the likes of Spike Robinson, Harry Allen, Ken Peplowski, Bobby Wellins and many others, while through his longstanding connection with the Marsden Jazz Festival he’s also played with John Surman, Tim Garland, Andy Sheppard and other premier UK jazz musicians. And if that weren’t enough, he’s also run his own label, Jazz Cat since 1995 releasing albums by Alan Skidmore, Dave O’Higgins and more.

It’s as a bandleader & recording artist however that Ben has further distinguished himself. His two volumes of the Ray Davies Songbook - an adventurous reimagining of beloved British pop songs written by the Kinks - as well as Ben’s other albums have been enthusiastically received by jazz audiences and tonight’s show heralds the release of his latest recording, ‘North York Skies”. Described by Ben as “a love letter to the North York Moors”, the compositions are inspired by “the beauty and majesty of the Moors and the surrounding countryside, the legends and characters that abound there, and some personal connections with this lovely area.” Featuring Quintet stalwarts trumpeter Steve Waterman, pianist Steve Lodder, guitarist Chris Allard and drummer Nic France, this promises to be a heartfelt and beautifully realised musical journey.

One of the U.K.’s finest jazz singers Beverley Beirne will be returning as part of York’s Theatre Royal Jazz Programme on Saturday 10th October.

Beverley has performed at leading clubs throughout the UK and Europe including Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Jazz Club, 606 Club, The Stables (Cleo Laine’s prestigious venue), Gregory’s in Rome and Venice Jazz Club, and headlined at Marsden Jazz Festival and Limerick Jazz Festival with her band of leading U.K. musicians.

Dream Dancer, Beverley’s latest album was in the long-list for The Grammy’s Best Jazz Vocal Album and received multiple 4* reviews.  ‘Old Brazil’ from the album, written by saxophone legend Duncan Lamont originally as the theme to the 70s children’s programme Mr. Benn, was at #no2 in the Roots Charts in the states for several weeks.  The album focuses on her original takes on songs of hope, passion, of living life to the full, of day dreaming, regret, love lost and love found and ultimately of dancing through the game and rhythm of life.  The album was produced by Grammy-winning NY producer Jason Miles (Luther Vandross, Miles Davis, Sting).

The material contains some of the finest songs and song-writers in the jazz repertoire and beyond, such as the little known ‘Reaching For The Moon,’ by the great Irving Berlin featuring double bass and ‘Grandma’s Hands’ by Bill Withers, highlighting both Beverley’s comparison to Anita O’Day and Cleo Lane. True to form, Beverley also includes original interpretations such as David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance,’ and a crowd pleasing bluesy version of The Clash’s ‘Should stay or Should I go.’ 

Beverley will also include original songs from U.K. legend Duncan Lamont and a preview of some of Beverley’s own compositions due to be recorded next year for her fourth studio album.

Producer Jason Miles (Miles Davis, Luther Vandross, Sting) says, “Beverley has one of those voices that you can keep on listening to. I just don’t hear many jazz singers today like her.”

Islay, Scotland: For one weekend in September, the island of Islay becomes a living stage where the global jazz community comes to create together. Running from 11th-13th September 2026, the 28th Caol Ila Islay Jazz Festival pairs the Hebrides’ rugged landscapes with a deeply collaborative spirit. Festival visitors to the island will have the exclusive opportunity to experience a limited-edition bottling of Caol Ila, crafted specifically to celebrate this annual music and culture event. Musicians from Scotland and across the globe are dropping into the island’s unique spaces to share the stage. Audiences can follow the music from working distilleries to local village halls, catching rare, spontaneous collaborations alongside Islay’s finest single malts.

Opening Night at Caol Ila
Building on last year’s inaugural partnership, headline sponsor Caol Ila hosts the festival’s opening night at their Brand Home overlooking the Sound of Islay. The evening features the world premieres of two new musical works inspired by Islay and some of its famous inhabitants: Orwell by guitarist Graeme Stephen and Islands by saxophonist Laura Macdonald.

International Collaborations
True to the festival’s ethos of creative collision, international guests will pair up with Scottish musicians. Romanian trio AmphiTrio will perform their own contemporary material before fronting a concert with Glasgow’s best young horn players Liam O’Neil and Simon Herbaholz. Australian trumpeter and vocalist Audrey Powne and German drummer Gerwin Eisenhauer will also lead cross-border sessions with pianist Fergus McCreadie and saxophonist Matt Kilner, pulling top-tier Scottish talent into their festival line-ups.

Spotlight on Rising Stars
The program also features two recent winners of the Scottish Jazz Awards’ Rising Star title, placed in two iconic festival slots:
Saturday Night Headline: 2024 Rising Star Laura Osa headlines Saturday evening with a set drawn from her debut album, blending contemporary jazz and soul.
Sunday at Laphroaig: Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Kimberley Tessa (the 2023 winner) brings her mix of saxophone, flute, and vocals to the Laphroaig distillery on Sunday afternoon.

Focus on Drummers
This year’s lineup places a heavy emphasis on percussionists pushing contemporary jazz forward. The Richard Glassby Quartet makes their highly anticipated Islay debut, while Roan Anderson—winner of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2025—brings his band, Tao, into Lagavulin’s historic Malt Mill.

£10 Islay Experiences
To keep the festival accessible, all Islay residents are eligible for a 10% discount on every concert, and a selection of unique, site-specific performances are priced at just £10. These include:
The Round Church (Bowmore): Guitarist Graeme Stephen pairs up with violist Fiona Winning for a set of original jazz inside the island’s famous circular church.
The Caol Ila Barrel Store: Blues specialist Toby Mottershead strips things back for a raw, acoustic set of classic Delta blues inside a working whisky warehouse.

Established in 1985 by a group of local residents, the Islay Arts Association (IAA) was founded with the mission of bringing high-quality artists and public performances to the island. A fresh face on the Midlands jazz scene, Sam is an up-and-coming saxophonist whose sound is inspired by legends such as Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, and Kenny Garrett. Looking ahead to the Live at the Village Vanguard week of August 24 is a Paramount moment for us as a Quartet to follow up our studio release earlier this year. I’m so happy the have ECM and the Vanguard’s embrace that is making it all happen.”

The “Paramount” in Joe Lovano’s new quartet can be interpreted as a statement of intent. “I feel like at this point I’m on the rise,” Joe says, seemingly unaware of the decades of experience and several dozens of leader-recordings under his belt. “We’ve arrived at this unique place with this quartet – It’s very special. It’s a new thing. Recording this with Manfred [Eicher] in the studio, I was really thrilled with the way the group continuously developed. And those cats, they play with a real global awareness!” The “cats” in question are guitarist Julian Lage, Asante Santi Debriano on bass and drummer Will Calhoun (otherwise known for his part in the American rock group Living Colour) – all players who help shape a striking, adventurous new chapter in Joe Lovano’s expansive oeuvre on Paramount Quartet.

Paramount Quartet’s formation was inspired by the saxophonist’s initial meeting with Asante and Will at a 2023 fundraiser for Puerto Rican hurricane relief. The trio immediately hit it off. As Joe puts it: “sometimes you meet, and it’s like you’ve known each other your whole life. That happened with Will, Asante and I”. Adding Julian to the mix was the next logical step, as the saxophonist and guitarist had been talking about doing something together since back when the guitarist was part of one of Joe’s ensembles at Berklee College Of Music starting in 2006.

The group’s flawless understanding is as elegant in understated ballads as it is striking on several full-out romps, making this record a diversified yet balanced programme that covers multiple idiomatic pockets of improvisation. Opening with Charlie Haden’s “First Song”, the group delivers a refined invocation that introduces the proceedings with a deep, soulful yearning. Joe: “I used to sub for Ernie Watts with Quartet West, Charlie on bass and Lawrence Marable on drums. And playing it with Charlie on those occasions, I fell in love with the tune. And I didn’t really dare touch it for a while until we started to play it with Paramount. It has this beautiful meditative quality about it.”

Full Biography

Abbie is a drummer from the North-East, who gained a 1st Class Degree in Jazz from Leeds Conservatoire and a Masters degree from Trinity Laban in London. Her current main projects are her Trio and the Finn-Keeble Group. She performs with a range of other bands, and is a regular drummer for artists visiting the area including Vasilis Xenopoulos, Andrea Vicari, Alan Barnes, Art Themen, Greg Abate and more. Abbie had a feature in Jazzwise, and was dubbed the ‘one to watch this month’ and a ‘crucial member of the thriving North-East scene.’ She has released four albums to date with her trio, who have been dubbed ‘Exceptional British Jazz’ by Chris Phillips of Jazz FM. Alongside jazz, Abbie performed live in 2018 in the Jamie Lloyd production of ‘Pinter Four: Moonlight/Night School’ as part of the prestigious Pinter at the Pinter season on London’s West End. “Abbie Finn’s impeccable drumming is vivifying” - Marissa Khaos_TheUpComing.

Harry, originally from East Sussex, is known for a strong tone and style, he cites a wide array of inspirations from Joe Henderson, to Coltrane, through to Chris Potter and Allan Holdsworth. He is the saxophonist for the Finn-Keeble Group, Abbie Finn Trio, Russ Morgan Quartet, Zoe Gilby Quintet, and has performed with some of the finest musicians in the UK and beyond, including Alan Barnes, Andrea Vicari, Art Themen, Greg Abate, and others. Harry was described as “A remarkably versatile and assured musician” by the Jazz Mann. He runs the Harry Keeble Quartet, who have their first full album in the works, after their highly successful E.P. ‘The Beacon’.

They are joined by highly regarded musicians Dean Stockdale and John Pope.
Dean continues to be in demand as a performer with his trio and quartet, and as pianist for touring jazz artists, accompanist for vocalists and as a teacher and session pianist. 2021 saw the release of his second trio album entitled ‘Promise the Moon’. His latest release ‘Celebrating Oscar’ features new quartet arrangements of Oscar Peterson’s rarely heard compositions and new arrangements.
John is an artist with a diverse and expansive creative practice, who currently composes and leads his own chordless jazz quintet, as well as being one third of garage-jazz trio Archipelago. He has performed and collaborated with artists including Roger Turner, Mick Beck, Rhodri Davies, Greg Spero, Field Music, Anton Hunter, Chris Biscoe, Joe McPhee, Laura Cole and many others.

Benn was active in the London Music Scene in the 1970’s and was a protégé of Ronnie Scott. He moved to L.A. California in 1980 where he is now based. He was recommended for Horace Silver’s band and recordings followed. Having skills as a multi-instrumentalist (tenor, alto, baritone sax, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet) he has carved a career in the L.A music scene. He has worked with a huge array of class A musicians from the LA Philharmonic Orchestra to Cab Calloway. However, his main passion is playing Tenor Sax in a quartet setting – and his approach is unique. Playing from the songbook of Blue Note and more contemporary jazz, his tone is extraordinarily beautiful, and his melodic ideas come from the heart. As someone said recently ‘It’s as though he’s talking to us and telling us a story through the saxophone!’
Benn is joined by Alex Hutton (piano), Simon Thorpe (bass) and Matt Home (drums).
Alex Hutton is an established pianist on the London Jazz scene. Over the past 10 years, he has worked with most of the leading figures including Jim Mullen, Pete King and more. He began playing piano at the age of five. After completing a BA Hons degree in American studies, he turned his focus fully to jazz piano – winning praise from the late Ronnie Scott.
Simon Thorpe has worked with many of the great UK and US names in jazz, recording and touring. Outside the jazz sphere he has played with artists as diverse as Amy Winehouse, Imelda Staunton, Alexander Armstrong, Mica Paris, Sean McGowan, Rick Astley and more. He writes the music arrangements for Mitch Winehouse’s 7-piece band and he has also been a composer. Simon has written music for theatre, jazz ensembles, BBC TV and BAFTA award winning short film Wedding Espresso.
Matt Home was born in West Yorkshire. He started playing drums at the age of eight. After taking private lessons, he enrolled on a course in Jazz and popular music, graduating in 1994. He soon began playing professionally in Leeds, before moving to London. Matt has played with many of the leading musicians in London, UK and Europe including Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen and more. He has played with many US artists and has played in clubs, theatres and jazz festivals.

Nick Tomalin formed his ‘Shades of Shearing’ Quintet in 2021 to celebrate the remarkable musical legacy of iconic British-born, blind-from-birth, jazz pianist George Shearing. The band features the same line-up as his classic quintet which captured the imagination of fans world-wide with hit recordings like ‘September in the Rain’, ‘Conception’ and ‘Lullaby of Birdland’.

St. Kat’s Sessions, London’s only floating jazz club, opens for its summer season on Friday 17th July with six weeks of live jazz on the pontoon at St Katharine Docks.

After multiple sold-out shows, the popular series brings serious jazz credentials to the waterside estate with world-class musicians, Nyetimber on arrival, and an audience close enough to catch every nuance.

The opening night sees Natalie Williams, Judi Jackson, and Olivia Swann - artist in residence and fresh off her “Judy” single, take to the stage. They’ll be joined by Jamie Safir on piano and Flo Moore on upright bass. It’s the tone-setter for six weeks that ranges from contemporary jazz to classic standards, with artists flying in from the US and established UK voices.

Inspired by intimate jazz-club vibes, what makes the series work is the setting. There’s no stage-audience separation here and every guest feels part of the performance.

The lineup includes some serious names. Spilata makes a UK debut and exclusive premiere on 25 July and is set to be one of the standout performances of the season. Summer Camargo, fresh off performing on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, brings virtuosity and energy in equal measure. Sharlene Hector, award-winning and just off Hercules in the West End, effortlessly moves between jazz, soul, gospel and pop. Juni Habels fragile finger-picked lullabies warm themselves by the open fire with her rich intimate voice atop twinkling arrangements and strange percussive instrumentation. Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s near 40 year collaboration is one of the most consequential in the history of jazz music.

The two had an uncanny symbiosis that sometimes verged on telepathy. Normally, the shy Strayhorn worked tirelessly in the background while the debonair Ellington performed in the limelight for audiences worldwide.

While the pair had already coproduced innumerable master works prior to 1960’s Nutcracker Suite, the release of this album marked the first time that Strayhorn appeared on the cover of an Ellington album. He is center stage, seated next to the maestro and smiling serenely.

In retrospect, Strayhorn had come up with the idea for the project and had arranged much of the music so it made sense to have his name in bright lights on the cover. However, this is the first public suggestion that Ellington was not the sole architect of his works.

This album is another first for Ellington as it represents the first time he had re-orchestrated the work of a major classical composer. He and Strayhorn adapt Tchaikovsky’s themes perfectly into the Ellingtonian swing style. There are bombastic full band performances in “Peanut Briddle Brigade” contrasted with the sparse and mysterious “Sugar Rum Cherry” and “Chinoiserie”. It is such a work of genius that you might even end up preferring it to the original.

This evenings performance will also feature Smith’s original compositions and other rarities from Ellington and the big band canon.

I’m delighted we were able to secure an additional night at The Marr’s Bar, outside our regular fortnightly programme, to accommodate Brazilian multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer and composer Frederico Heliodoro, as he performs just three dates on the UK leg of his current international tour.

Frederico was born in Rio de Janeiro, grew up in Belo Horizonte and spent a few years in São Paulo before returning to Rio, where he currently lives. Celebrating ten years of international touring, Frederico presents a new concert featuring music from his albums The Weight of the News, Máximos Eventos and Gávea Days Compact, alongside recent compositions written in Rio de Janeiro. The new material reflects a growing connection with the city, its atmosphere, its neighbourhoods and its particular sense of mystery, heard in pieces such as Fantasia Carioca and Ciclo do Leme.

Bringing together different moments of his artistic journey, the program moves between older and newer works while maintaining a strong personal voice shaped by years of performing and collaborating with artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Milton Nascimento, Louis Cole and Zé Ibarra. Rather than looking back, this concert offers a glimpse of where that journey has arrived today.

Frederico, on lead bass and vocals, will be joined by Birmingham legend Tom Ford on bass and Newcastle’s Knats drummer King Ike-Elechi. A keys player, yet to be confirmed will complete the lineup.

This time we’ll be gathering for an early evening Sunday concert, beginning around 4:30pm and concluding before 9:30pm. A little later than our usual matinees, but still allowing plenty of time to ease gently into the working week ahead.

There’s something rather special about Sunday evenings. The weekend begins to slow, the pace softens, and there’s an opportunity to pause before the demands of Monday arrive. It feels like the perfect setting for the music we have planned.

I’m particularly excited about this one and delighted to finally share the details with newsletter subscribers before the public announcement tomorrow.

Originally from Japan and now based in London, cellist, singer and composer midori jaeger brings her (Re)planted EP Launch to Shrewsbury with her full band.

Drawing on influences from jazz, folk, contemporary classical music and electronics, midori creates immersive and deeply personal songs exploring themes of identity, belonging and place.

Her new double EP, (Re)planted, reflects on a childhood spent across multiple continents and the challenge of establishing roots in unfamiliar landscapes. Written at the cello—an instrument crafted from a once-living tree—the songs draw poignant parallels between the natural world and the human search for home, connection and self.
I’m delighted to announce that our next event will take place in October in the beautiful Darwin Room.

A genre-defying artist and collaborator, midori has performed with Imogen Heap, Courtney Pine, Daughter, Patrick Watson, Jessie Ware and Tanita Tikaram. Alongside her work as a performer, she also composes for film, dance and theatre.

I hope the start of summer is being kind to you and that you’ve been finding time to enjoy some of the gifts that come with this wonderful season of growth.

This newsletter is a little shorter than usual in some respects and rather longer in others. There are a few headlines about upcoming gigs, alongside a longer passage of reflection.

Sorry about that.

As many of you will know, these newsletters occasionally become a form of public journaling. Writing them helps me process things and, perhaps, may resonate with some of you too.

If reflections on mental wellbeing, self-doubt and the occasional wander through my inner landscape aren’t quite your bag, and I completely respect that they won’t be for everyone, please feel free to skip ahead and land on the recommendations and gig news section instead.

Early sell out - Event 4.0
First off, there are only a couple of tickets remaining for Event 4.0 on September 13th, a special matinee performance with Haiku Salut, Osgeld and Matt Sewell.

Being on the verge of an early sell-out is a welcome surprise. It’s been quite a while since that happened, and I’m genuinely grateful.

Moments like this are a reminder that there are people who continue to value these shared experiences and the opportunity to discover something a little different. Music that sits outside the mainstream. Music for the curious.

I’m delighted to announce that our next event will take place in October in the beautiful Darwin Room.

This time we’ll be gathering for an early evening Sunday concert, beginning around 4:30pm and concluding before 9:30pm. A little later than our usual matinees, but still allowing plenty of time to ease gently into the working week ahead.

There’s something rather special about Sunday evenings. The weekend begins to slow, the pace softens, and there’s an opportunity to pause before the demands of Monday arrive. It feels like the perfect setting for the music we have planned.

I’m particularly excited about this one and delighted to finally share the details with newsletter subscribers before the public announcement tomorrow.

Originally from Japan and now based in London, cellist, singer and composer midori jaeger brings her (Re)planted EP Launch to Shrewsbury with her full band.

Drawing on influences from jazz, folk, contemporary classical music and electronics, midori creates immersive and deeply personal songs exploring themes of identity, belonging and place.

Her new double EP, (Re)planted, reflects on a childhood spent across multiple continents and the challenge of establishing roots in unfamiliar landscapes. Written at the cello—an instrument crafted from a once-living tree—the songs draw poignant parallels between the natural world and the human search for home, connection and self.

A genre-defying artist and collaborator, midori has performed with Imogen Heap, Courtney Pine, Daughter, Patrick Watson, Jessie Ware and Tanita Tikaram. Alongside her work as a performer, she also composes for film, dance and theatre.

Opening the evening is Iris, whose distinctive contemporary sound and emerging creative voice make them a perfect complement to an evening centred on exploration, connection and discovery.

I’m delighted to welcome virtuoso pianist Neil Angilley back to our stage, following his first appearance in 2024 with Steve Taylor’s Fusion Phew and, more recently, with Minas Project in January this year. This time, he brings his own trio featuring Minas Project leader, drummer and vocalist Davide Giovannini and bassist Davide Mantovani.

The Neil Angilley Trio have released five albums since 2007, most recently Live at the 606 Club – the prestigious London jazz venue which holds a special place in Neil’s heart. Their spellbinding live show incorporates instrumental virtuosity and 3-part vocal harmony, which adds a unique dimension to the sound, creating an uplifting take on infectious rhythms from Brazil and Cuba.

As an original member of Grammy Nominated band Down To The Bone, Neil has co-written and played on many of their albums, most recently The Sweetness, which charted at number one in the USA Billboard Charts for Jazz/Funk. Along with Davide Giovannini, he performs with Snowboy and The Latin Section, with other live performance credits including Vanessa-Mae, Maceo Parker, Lionel Richie, Lisa Stansfield and Three Friends (Gentle Giant) and Glastonbury main stage with Dame Shirley Bassey.

Davide Giovannini was on drums when the fantastic 7-piece TRYPL raised the Marr’s Bar roof in January last year, while Davide Mantovani made his Marr’s Bar debut with the Brazilian-infused Tristan Banks Quartet back in 2023. This really is a Latin powerhouse that you won’t want to miss!

Cornish double bassist and composer Marcus Penrose left the wild Atlantic coast for the bustle of London aged just 18. His trio, Aurelius grew from a long-standing musical bond with pianist Will Butterworth, forged twenty years ago in a smoky West London bar where they played together six nights a week. Performing there to the likes of Mick Jagger, Madonna, and Annie Lennox, along with pilgrimages to hear Paul Motian in mid-2000s New York shaped their jazz education. These experiences echo through the music of Aurelius, as they seek out beauty within the corners of their improvisations. Joined by kindred spirit drummer Peter Ibbetson, they embrace a sense of limitless musical possibility.

A must-see for Indian classical music fans: The sitar star pays tribute to the late table player Zakir Hussain. Sitar star Niladri Kumaar is a musical maverick, redefining the classical Indian sound for the next generation. In this concert, he pays tribute to his friend, mentor and frequent collaborator, the late tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. Before Hussain’s passing, the sitar-tabla duo was captured in the wonderful 2017 documentary The Space Between the Notes. Laura is one of the leading talents on the UK jazz scene. She leads Mercury-nominated band Dinosaur, has written music for the BBC Proms, National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and BBC Concert Orchestra. She is a BBC New Generation Artist, winner of a 2019 Ivor Composer Award, and recently released her 6th individual album “Rite and Revelations” to widespread critical acclaim.

The show follows the arrival of Drexler’s new album TARACÁ, released in March 2026, which marks a new creative chapter in his career. On the album, Drexler returns to musical roots that have shaped his artistic identity while continuing to expand his sonic palette, with the Afro-Uruguayan rhythm of candombe running throughout the record.

The last time Haiku Salut joined us was in November 2018 at St Alkmund’s Church, an evening show beautifully supported by my friend Joel (@tinyleavesmusic).

This time, they return in a different light at our new venue, The Darwin Room, Shrewsbury Library, presenting a special afternoon matinee, with support from Osgled and Matt Sewell.

For those discovering them afresh, Haiku Salut are the Derbyshire-born trio of Gemma Barkerwood, Sophie Barkerwood and Louise Croft. Self-described as “instrumental dream-pop-post-folk-neo-everything,” their music is intricate, cinematic and entirely wordless, glockenspiel, accordion, piano, electronics and found sounds woven into something both playful and profound.
Drawing inspiration from composers such as Yann Tiersen and Benoît Charest, alongside the delicate experimentalism of Múm, they create immersive soundscapes that feel like miniature films unfolding in real time.

A vibrant programme of world-class jazz talent has been announced for this year’s Swansea International Jazz Festival, set to take place from 3 – 6 September 2026 across venues in the city.

Presented by Swansea Council, the festival promises four days of outstanding live music, showcasing an exciting mix of internationally acclaimed artists and leading
UK performers.

Opening the festival on Thursday 3 September at Swansea Grand Theatre will be Swiss guitarist, Nicolas Meier, best known for touring with the Jeff Beck Band, blending influences from Turkish and Middle Eastern traditions with Flamenco, Tango, and contemporary jazz to create a sound that is vibrant, expressive, and entirely his own.

Friday sees the festival move to Swansea’s National Waterfront Museum, where Claire Martin and Laurence Cottle join forces to present their exciting new project, ‘Bass to Face’, performing songs they have written together over the years, but also classics from Monk to Ellington, Strayhorn and Porter.
Swansea Minster is the setting for the second of Friday’s gigs with velvety vocals and powerhouse trumpet playing as Georgina Jackson brings her ‘Sass and Brass’ show to the city.

Aidan Thorne and Jason Ball kick things off on Saturday, performing their music that reimagines Welsh folk melodies through a blend of improvisation and minimalism.
Then the Power of Gower Festival Big Band will light up the stage with an afternoon of swing, soul, and sizzling brass before award-winning saxophonist James Allsopp pays tribute to the legendary Stan Getz with his quartet. Christian Garrick’s String Bag, which showcases bowed strings beyond their classical comfort zone, brings Saturday’s live shows to a close.Music Event Promotion

On Sunday the festival takes a musical trip to Bourbon Street in New Orleans when Swansea’s Cottle Brothers go back to their musical roots in a special performance
with their Dixieland All-star Band. The festival, then, switches continents, with the Tango Jazz Quartet blending the fiery spirit of their nation’s Argentine tango with the
freedom and creativity of jazz improvisation. The festival closes with the outstanding Jana Varga fronting a seven-piece band, Hejira, in a celebration of Joni Mitchell’s
ground-breaking late-70s jazz period in at Swansea Minster.

Alongside the ticketed shows, Swansea International Jazz Festival features the Copper Jack Jazz Cruises, an unique opportunity to enjoy live jazz aboard a riverboat as it sails along the River Tawe, and the popular stroller programme, featuring over 50 free gigs across city centre venues, pubs, and cafés.

The Joe Masterson Trio

Described by many as a rising star of the UK Jazz scene, Joe Masterson, a 2020 graduate from Leeds Conservatoire is a Birmingham based pianist making his mark on the Birmingham and Midlands Jazz scene. After playing to sell-out crowds across the midlands, and performing at the likes of Cheltenham and Birmingham Jazz Festival, Joe is also known for Jazz at Fletchers – a monthly jazz club in Kings Heath, Birmingham running for over the past 3 years. Here, along with his trio of Miles Levin and Simon Smith, he has collaborated with the likes of Simon Spillet, Chris Bowden, Suzi Woods, Steve Ajao, Alex Clarke, Ade Wakelin and many more.

Influenced by the likes of Monty Alexander, Oscar Peterson and Eddie Higgins, the trio play a variety of music, always looking to groove.

Simon Smith is one of the UK’s most in demand bassists. He has worked extensively as a freelance musician throughout the UK, Europe and the US, including a five year stint based in Los Angeles. Simon’s recording credits include Stevie Nicks, Sarah McLachlan, Wilson Phillips, Glen Ballard and Dave Stewart. He has worked in the live touring bands of artists as diverse as Idina Menzel, Linda Perry, Carl Barât and Carina Round performing at venues and events including Lincoln Center (New York), Ambassadors Theatre, Glastonbury Festival, South by Southwest and La Bâtie Festival (Geneva) amongst many others.

Miles Levin is simply one of the finest jazz drummers in the whole of the UK, respected and admired nationally. He has performed all over the UK and internationally with many of the UK’s leading artists.
