Internationally renowned for his masterful performances in a variety of musical styles, world class violinist Omar Puente is nothing short of a true virtuoso. After establishing himself as an accomplished musician on his native Cuban soil, Omar moved to England in 1997 where he has since played in Europe, the Middle and Far East, the USA and Africa.

Having maintained close links with traditional Cuban music, classical genres and jazz, his album ‘Best Foot Forward, is rich with energy, colour, creative arrangements and originality.

Omar’s many accolades include The Lukas Award for The Classical, Jazz or Folk Act of the Year 2018; a top10 placement for Songline Magazine’s Album of the Year; and a nomination for Best Jazz Soloist in the 21st International CubaDisco Fair 2017.

Omar performed two concerts in November 2019 under the title of ‘An Evening for Debbie Purdy’ to honour the memory of his campaigning wife who died in 2014. Both concerts featured his sextet together with special guests.

URSULA RUCKER & TIM MOTZER
Wednesday October 14 at MIlk Crate, Philadelphia

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 14 MilkCrate Cafe presents a special intimate live show with legendary poet Ursula Rucker creating powerful stories with longtime collaborator & renown guitarist Tim Motzer on WEDNESDAY evening October 14, 8pm show. Not to be missed. Doors at 7pm

“From the moment that Ursula Rucker and Tim Motzer first unified their singular magical words-and-music efforts on the historic stages of Philly’s Tower Theater, opening for the legendarily conscious Nina Simone, all bets have been thrown off the table. Whether appearing within the intimate confines of a duet setting or something broader (but no less intrinsic and interpersonal), the divine cacophonous wordsmith and the clamorous textural guitarist have created tactile, co-joined waves of nuance and noise, of beauty, sex, strife and solace. Alone they are epic. Together, Rucker and Motzer are crucial, an emotional, intergalactic soulful soundscape too rare and too righteous to miss.”

Welsh bassist Ursula Harrison is joined by Swedish guitarist Thi Johansson to perform the music of both of their home countries, with a heavy dose of improvisation to tie things together. The two met while studying in Trondheim, Norway and instantly bonded over a shared, yet unusual combination of influences: singer-songwriter music and avant-garde free improvisation. This is what they will present in this concert, a totally impromptu set, weaving between folk melodies, original compositions and standards from the singer-songwriter and jazz traditions.

Rattle + Hurricane Tapes at Weirdshire, The Jam Factory, Hereford.

Date: Thursday, November 12, 2026

More details

We have received the following information regarding this event;

we’ve been wanting to bring the brilliant Rattle to Weirdshire for ages, and just haven’t quite managed to get the dates to work out. They are a fabulous duo of two drummers, both using their voices as well. The propulsive energy they create has to be witnessed, and then never forgotten. Their latest album (Encircle) was released on Upset the Rhythm, and they’re currently touring in Europe.

Reviewed in the Quietus and described thus:
“You could view Encircle as a rallying cry in the face of technofascism, encouraging a return to something analogue, simple and earthy. The simplicity is powerful, offering what a distracted mind often misses by maintaining a steady, consistent rhythm. There are no flashy fills or unnecessary embellishments; instead, the third member is space, allowing us to reflect on what truly matters.”

And not only that, but opening the evening on 12th November will be local post-punk/shoegaze heroes Hurricane Tapes - another band we’ve been trying to work out dates to play a Weirdshire show, and this one has worked out perfectly. They’ve got loads of new stuff they’re really excited about bringing to this show, and it’s going to altogether be an absolute blast.

HOORAY! After too long a wait (I’ve been so very busy and the time has flown by this year) I’m excited to announce the next AOTA gig - and the perfect precursor to January’s Bath Jazz Weekend - the multi-talented, multi-European quartet
SMIODAIR
featuring saxophonist Robin Fincker (from Paris), bassist Simon Jermyn (from Dublin and Berlin) and, from the jazziest town in Britain*, trumpeter Laura Jurd and Dave Smith (drums) -  four superb exponents of the improviser’s art, on a national tour, playing music that ranges from thunderingly enjoyable grooves to exquisite sonic soundscapes.
* Yes, of course Frome, now home to more incredible jazz talents than you can shake a drumstick at.

Playing for AOTA, for the first time ‘in the round’, in an acoustic set that will allow the audience to get as close as possible to their collective sound, the quartet will feature their own original music that weaves mysteriously between composition and improvisation.

Smiodair is an international group with roots that go back over twenty years. Drummer Dave Smith and saxophonist Robin Fincker first played together at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, going on to co-found the Loop Collective in London in 2005 — a venue, festival and record label that became a hub for the UK and European creative music scene. Bassist Simon Jermyn came into the fold through a collaboration between Dublin’s Bottlenote Collective and the Loop Collective in 2006, before a decade in New York and a move to Berlin that took his playing to new places.  For their UK tour in November 2026, the trio expands to a quartet with the addition of trumpeter Laura Jurd — one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British jazz.

The word Smiodair — from the Irish for fragments or small pieces — captures something true about musicians whose paths have diverged and reconnected across London, Paris, Dublin, New York, Berlin and, as ever, Frome.*

Here’s the ticket link again.  Looking forward to seeing you there.

New Experimental Tones: Electronic Music Special

N-Ex-T is back with a special night showcasing the possibilities of experimentation through the medium of electronic tonalities.
This could not happen without the support of Ty Cerdd, so please take a moment to check out what they are doing for contemporary music in Wales https://www.tycerdd.org/

We are over the moon to bring you not one, but two gigs this October 15th featuring ELDA (main act) and Marcel Holdys (support). I have had the privilege of seeing both acts in action but never on the same bill. Being a promoter of the series, I get the chance to curate an evening of music that I think will not only be an immersive experience for the audience, but a chance for musicians to meet from all genres with the hope of future collaborations and new possibilities!

ELDA is the acclaimed electro-acoustic duo of award-winning composer and keyboardist Andrew Woodhead and innovative trumpeter Aaron Diaz. Drawing on influences from free improvisation, electronica, contemporary jazz and folk music, the Birmingham-based duo creates immersive performances where acoustic instruments dissolve into richly textured electronic soundscapes. Every performance is unique, unfolding organically through spontaneous interaction, deep listening and fearless exploration.

Since forming, ELDA has established itself as one of the UK’s most distinctive creative music projects, collaborating with leading figures from the British and European improvising scenes including Faye MacCalman, Anton Hunter, Chris Mapp and Georgia Denham. Their celebrated Collaborations 2020-2022 box set and series of critically acclaimed releases have earned praise for blurring the boundaries between jazz, ambient music, contemporary composition and sound art. Atmospheric, adventurous and deeply expressive, ELDA offers audiences an intimate musical experience that rewards curiosity and invites listeners into an ever-changing world of sound.
https://www.andrewwoodheadmusic.com/elda

MARCEL HOLDYS is a UK-based sound artist whose work explores the intersection of sonic texture, spatial awareness, and emotional resonance. With a background rooted in both technical precision and creative experimentation, Marcel crafts immersive audio experiences that blur the boundaries between music, noise, and ambient soundscapes.
Drawing inspiration from urban environments, natural acoustics, and the subtle rhythms of everyday life, Marcel’s improvisations often incorporate field recordings, modular synthesis, and unconventional sound sources.

Summing it up:
It’s never an easy job promoting new experimental tones but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen!
This type of experimentation in music and sound is definitely something that should be experienced in the moment.
There’s something special about seeing it unfold as it happens, being on the edge of your seat waiting for the next movement and hearing and feeling sounds that might never happen again!
I heard a nice quote (not exact but somewhere near to)  from Christopher Nolan recently on his new film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey…
The biggest risk in film making is not taking a risk…

Guitarist, vocalist, raconteur Dave Peabody live at Kensington Church in Brecon…
Kensington Baptist Church, Brecon, LD3 9AY
Saturday 17th October 2026

After a very successful trip to Brecon with Mark Hummel and Bob Hall.
One of the Uk’s finest musicians DAVE PEABODY returns to Brecon (Solo)
SIXTY YEARS ON THE ROAD…

Guitarist, vocalist, raconteur Dave Peabody began performing in the mid ‘60’s during the heyday of the great British blues boom… and has now been a gigging musician for over 60 years.

As a solo acoustic artist Dave is recognised as specialist in early country blues and he’s achieved the accolade of being voted “Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year” three times by the British Blues Connection and Blues In Britain Magazine.

Dave’s first group was the Honest John Three.
The band won the National Jug Band contest in 1966 (one of the judges was Jo Ann Kelly)

From 1967 to 1970 Dave moved from London to Plymouth, Devon to attend Plymouth College of Art. He soon formed the Pongo Flossy Goodtime Merger, a goodtime band that quickly became popular locally. With other members of the group, Dave organised the Sincerity Hall Folk and Blues Club which booked many of the scenes name folk acts (Ralph McTell, The Strawbs, etc.) and British blues musicians such as Jo Ann Kelly, Mike Cooper, alongside American bluesmen Arthur “Big Boy Crudup and Juke Boy Bonner.

On returning to London Dave formed Tight Like That.
They recorded an album (under an assumed name) for the French label Disques Vogue in 1971.
The following year they recorded their well thought of album Hokum for the Village Thing label. When Tight Like That wound up operations (around 1974) Dave, for the rest of the decade played as the duo Peabody & McNulty with the band’s tea-chest bass player Hugh McNulty. The pair performed all around the UK’s folk club scene as well making incursions into Europe, especially Belgium. When Hugh finally decided to retire his tea-chest bass, Dave began a long association with blues and boogie pianist Bob Hall. Dave has also gigged with pianists Diz Watson and Colin Earl, with the guitar players Gypsy Dave Smith and Steve Williams, and with the harmonica players
Rob Mason, Brendan Power and Alan Glen.

For 15 years (1996 – 2011) Dave fronted the electric King Earl Boogie Band as their vocalist and guitarist. The 5-piece band, whose other members also included Mungo Jerry pianist Colin Earl and original Status Quo drummer John Coghlan, played numerous festivals including Colne’s Great British R’n’B Festival and Havant’s Blues at The Fort.

Dave has appeared on over 50 albums including 11 albums under his own name, 4 with Bob Hall, and 2 with the King Earl Boogie Band. The album Some of These Days (released March 2019) is a joint collaboration with classically trained violinist Regina Mudrich, who is originally from East Germany. He’s performed at clubs and festivals in over 20 different countries (including the USA) making him one of the most experienced and seasoned British blues men performing today. Dave has forged connections with many American blues artists including Mississippi legend Honeyboy Edwards and Grammy award winning harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite, accompanying them on British and European tours. Over the years, Dave has played on stage with a host of other blues men including Sonny Terry, Memphis Slim, Louisiana Red, Big Joe Duskin, Big Boy Henry, Chicago Bob Nelson, Neal Pattman, Dave Van Ronk, John Hammond Jnr. and, most recently, Mark Hummel.

“Dave Peabody enhanced his reputation as one of our most popular acoustic artists and raconteurs with a selection by the likes of the Memphis Jug Band, Tommy Johnson, Oscar “Buddy” Woods and Furry Lewis. plus a handful of his own compositions. There’s only one way to sum up this special evening – this was the Blues!”  (Blueprint online review of a 100 Club gig 19/11/08)

Info >

In a beautiful St Hilda’s Church, in Crofton Park, guitarist/composer Branco Stoysin, life-long aficionado of Nikola Tesla, performs his epic new music/video movie project Aurora Tesla, that in the most lyrical, illuminating and concise way tells the story about Nikola Tesla, Serbian born genius of electricity. It’s a poignant and a sole tribute, marking 170 years since the birth of Nikola Tesla and 130 years since the birth of modern civilisation with the implementation of Nikola Tesla’s Polyphase Alternating Current System on The Niagara Falls in 1896. On this day, the 15th of November 1896, 130 years ago, the very first kilowatts of the electricity, derived from Nikola Tesla’s Electricity Power system that harnessed the Niagara Falls, were distributed from Niagara Falls Hydroelectric Power Plant, to 40 Km away the Buffalo state of New York, marking the birth of modern civilisation. This is the very same electricity power system that’s been in use throughout the whole world for 130 years, and in the UK too :>) Every pylon, everywhere around the world, carries Tesla’s blood, The Electricity, to lighten your existence.

Branco will also play the tunes from his previous eight CD albums and from his recent, triple anniversary, the ninth CD album, Whispers From The Sun, which marked 40 years of music art making, of those 30 years in London. As an avid photographer and naturalist, for the finale of recital, Branco will perform special three music/video movies projects depicting the beautiful natural world right on our doorsteps. A recital for an audio and visual delight.

“A musical journey to warm the soul” Sarah Ward, Jazz FM.

“Music of great delicacy and charm” Chris Parker.

“The sound of a master craftsman at work”
“Stoysin’s music is a welcome and beautiful constant in a rapidly changing world”
Ian Mann.

Violinist and vocalist Dominic Ingham and pianist Jay Verma bring a fresh perspective to the classic violin-and-piano duo, performing a seamless blend of jazz, Scottish and Irish folk, and ‘modern-day lullabies’ (Jazz Mann).
Yorkshire-born violinist and vocalist Dominic Ingham is ‘fast establishing himself as one of the UK’s leading proponents of jazz violin’ (Jazzwise), following the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Role Models. The record presents a compelling suite of lucidly crafted, characterful pieces that showcase Dominic’s distinctive and highly personal style, deeply rooted in folk and classical traditions. He has toured extensively across the UK with his quartet, performing at renowned venues and festivals including Ronnie Scott’s, Love Supreme, the Royal Albert Hall, and the EFG London Jazz Festival. Recent collaborations include Emma Rawicz, Trish Clowes, and Elliot Galvin. In 2020, Dominic was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Award for Jazz Newcomer and was a finalist in the prestigious Zbigniew Seifert International Jazz Violin Competition. He currently teaches jazz violin at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Jay Verma is a distinguished pianist and composer based in London. Guesde [EMERGENCE] @guesdecollective
‘Guesde (pronounced “gesht”) are a North London jazz fusion band blending Indian classical music, jazz, and London sounds like drum & bass and grime into something raw and unique. At the centre of what Guesde does is experimentation - keeping the energy of rehearsal alive in performance, where things can shift, stretch, or fall apart completely, driving sounds through a live effects processing unit that takes sound in real time and mangles it into something new. Their live shows lean into performance art, featuring mirror masks made by artist Freddie Yauner. Their influences span the legacies of Shakti, King Crimson, Arthur Russell and Wayne Shorter, while also pulling from contemporary artists like Dijon, Wayne Krantz, and Tigran Hamasyan. They’ve been played on Maria Grapsa’s East of the Sun on One Jazz Radio and by Karl Bos on Soho Radio, and have performed at venues including MAP Studio Cafe, Hampstead Jazz Club, and The Elephant’s Head.

midori jaeger is a cellist and songwriter originally from Japan. She headlines Stone Nest with an intimate and captivating performance to launch her new EP (Re)planted with a band.

(Re)planted and her previous EP (Un)planted draw upon a childhood spent across multiple continents and an adulthood geographically separated from family, exploring themes of displacement, belonging, heritage, and solace found in creative expression. The songs were written at the cello, an instrument that was once a living tree. The cello and the songs together draw poignant parallels between the natural world and the human search for home, and self.

Strikingly personal and totally unique in style, midori’s music has been championed by The New York Times (‘Ten Songs We’re Talking About This Week’), CLASH, The Line of Best Fit, BBC Radio 3, BBC 6 Music and KEXP.

midori is a genre-defying collaborator who has recently performed with Imogen Heap, Jessie Ware, Courtney Pine, Patrick Watson, Daughter, Tanita Tikaram and Christian Löffler.

For this performance midori will be joined by:
Ben Brown - Drums
Maria Chiara Argirò - Piano
Felix Higginbottom - Bass Synth/Percussion/Guitar

Presented by Serious and Asian Tones

“midori jaeger…often builds her songs atop pizzicato cello parts that sketch harmony, counterpoint and shifting meters as they hop around her voice…The spartan production - cello, drums, vocals, - gives her the space she’s claiming.”
The New York Times, Jon Pareles

“midori jaeger has created something singular here: A world unto itself, percussive and human, feverish and tender.’’
Atwood Magazine

“A sensuous, subtly propulsive track built around her lustrous voice, airy synths and a rhythmic cello groove consisting of plucked strings.”

KIM CYPHER’S FUNKY LATIN JAZZ PARTY
Thursday, November 12, 2026
7:30 PM 9:30 PM

KIM CYPHER’S FUNKY LATIN JAZZ PARTY
An uplifting, vibrant show full of positive energy and feel-good vibes.

‍A welcome return for one of the country’s most exciting saxophonists, vocalists and composers Kim Cypher, together with her band of top UK jazz musicians. This is sure to have the Corn Exchange buzzing with a lively, celebratory selection of Latin, jazz, African beats, Reggae and funky grooves.

Kim Cypher’s FUNKY LATIN JAZZ PARTY is the sequel to her hugely successful 2025 ‘LIVE and Smiling’ tour which included sellout shows across the country including Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. This brand-new tour has been going down an absolute storm since it launched at the prestigious Cheltenham Jazz Festival, closing the main DEYA Arena to a hugely enthusiastic crowd, followed by a return sellout show at Ronnie Scott’s.

Kim Cypher is a firm favourite on the UK jazz scene, renowned for her charismatic, vivacious style and warm stage presence. With four highly acclaimed albums, award-winning music videos and performance in New, Kim has firmly secured her reputation as a leading figure in contemporary jazz, described as a “rare musical treasure” by Jazz FM’s David Freeman and a “force of nature” by jazz reviewer the Jazz Mann.

The band features Chris Cobbson on guitar, Alex Steele on piano, Mike Green on bass, Mike Cypher on drums who between them, have worked with some of the most highly respected artists and bands including Courtney Pine, Curtis Stigers, Jools Holland, Ronnie Scott’s Big Band, Sheila Ferguson (the Three Degrees), Ray Gelato, Osibisa, Liane Carroll, Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Monty Alexander, Spike Robinson, Van Morrison, Paloma Faith…

Dave Jones Stratospheric @TheCafé
Critically acclaimed Welsh keyboardist/composer Dave Jones and his newest band ‘Stratospheric’ play their own exciting brand of jazz-influenced progressive rock. The material is original Prog Rock, played by a line-up who are essentially jazz musicians that work in a broad range of musical styles.

‘Stratospheric’ has a great line-up (in fact more of a pool of musicians who share the gigs) including those musicians who were involved in recording at the very start of this project, alongside those who joined later for the first live performances in 2026. Between them all, their other work has seen them involved in performing/recording with e.g. Portishead, Jethro Tull, Toyah, Kasabian, Goldfrapp, and the late great rock and jazz session bassist Herbie Flowers.

Tonight’s expected line-up is …
Ben Waghorn (saxes, flute)
Tim Rose (guitar)
Dave Jones (keyboards)
Ashley John Long (bass)
Scott Hammond (drums)

The track ‘Trepidation/74 Heist’ from the new ‘Stratospheric’ vinyl album recently won Prog magazine’s ’Tracks of the Week’ feature, and the album has attracted great reviews in both the same magazine and in the online magazine ‘Jazz Views’, explaining the music from two different viewpoints.

Dave has composed a great deal of other music, both for his own jazz ensembles and for solo piano, and also for tv and film, having tracks used worldwide in productions for major networks, including e.g. The Big Bang Theory, news and current affairs programmes in Japan and Europe, and lifestyle programmes in the UK, alongside films including the Hollywood movie ‘Nuremberg’ (2026) with his piano piece ‘Paradise Found’.

Tapas option: Enjoy a Mediterranean selection of warm bread, mixed Italian olives, feta cheese and sun-dried tomatoes to share.

Doors open at 7:30 PM. Music from 8:00 PM.

Nov 29th - Event 7.0 Momen + Rhubiqs

Momen is the London-based duo of Iván Muela (piano/guitar/electronics) and Nat Philipps (saxophone/electronics), who balance poise and catharsis throughout the eight movements of their début album, Sympathetic Resonance. Equally inspired by Bach, Sakamoto, and time spent in post-punk bands, their world of jazz-influenced experimentation and spacious ambient textures thrives on the subtle transformations embedded within apparent stillness.
https://tinangelrecords.bandcamp.com/album/sympathetic-resonance

Support comes from Rhubiqs, the solo project of London-based composer and sound designer Tom Squires.

Squires’ music creates a world where Actress meets Kranky, with a side dose of Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works for good measure. These are far-reaching electronic and ambient sounds that provide immersive soundscapes for listeners to lose themselves in amidst thought-provoking textures, samples and field recordings.

Jazz at Progress | Jazz at Progress | Benn Clatworthy Quartet | Tickets on sale soon
Friday 19 March 2027 | Progress Theatre, Reading | 7: 30pm | £20.00, £18.00 concessions, £10 under 16 plus 3.5% booking fee.
Benn Clatworthy tenor sax | Alex Hutton piano | Simon Thorpe bass | Matt Home drums
Benn was active in the London Music Scene in the 1970’s and was a protégé of Ronnie Scott. He moved to L.A. California in 1980 where he is now based. He was recommended for Horace Silver’s band and recordings followed. Having skills as a multi-instrumentalist (tenor, alto, baritone sax, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet) he has carved a career in the L.A music scene. He has worked with a huge array of class A musicians from the LA Philharmonic Orchestra to Cab Calloway. However, his main passion is playing Tenor Sax in a quartet setting – and his approach is unique. Playing from the songbook of Blue Note and more contemporary jazz, his tone is extraordinarily beautiful, and his melodic ideas come from the heart. As someone said recently ‘It’s as though he’s talking to us and telling us a story through the saxophone!’
Benn is joined by Alex Hutton (piano), Simon Thorpe (bass) and Matt Home (drums).
Alex Hutton is an established pianist on the London Jazz scene. Over the past 10 years, he has worked with most of the leading figures including Jim Mullen, Pete King and more. He began playing piano at the age of five. After completing a BA Hons degree in American studies, he turned his focus fully to jazz piano – winning praise from the late Ronnie Scott.
Simon Thorpe has worked with many of the great UK and US names in jazz, recording and touring. Outside the jazz sphere he has played with artists as diverse as Amy Winehouse, Imelda Staunton, Alexander Armstrong, Mica Paris, Sean McGowan, Rick Astley and more. He writes the music arrangements for Mitch Winehouse’s 7-piece band and he has also been a composer. Simon has written music for theatre, jazz ensembles, BBC TV and BAFTA award winning short film Wedding Espresso.
Matt Home was born in West Yorkshire. He started playing drums at the age of eight. After taking private lessons, he enrolled on a course in Jazz and popular music, graduating in 1994. He soon began playing professionally in Leeds, before moving to London. Matt has played with many of the leading musicians in London, UK and Europe including Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen and more. He has played with many US artists and has played in clubs, theatres and jazz festivals.

We start the new season with the fantastic Five-Way Split, featuring their 2026 album, “Modus Operandi”. The band has been playing together since 2020 and as is the case with jazz musicians, they have developed the understanding that makes a brilliant experience for us jazz fans. May 2024 was the last time at Progress and Trevor Bannister’s review of the gig ended; “The band launched into a blues. It was ‘All hands to the pumps’ as the excitement mounted for the grand finale – blistering solos, high speed exchanges, dramatic top notes … still the audience called ‘more!”. Nothing less is anticipated in 2026.
The new album contains original compositions from Rob Barron, Quentin Collins and Vasilis Xenopoulos alongside arrangements of tunes by Henry Mancini, Jimmy Van Heusen. Most compositions are of the rousing “hard bop” variety, if one has to use such terms. However, whatever term you use, a guaranteed night of great jazz is assured.
A final quote from The Jazzmann who attended the band’s London Jazz Festival gig in November 2025, when they played tunes from the yet to be released “Modus Operandi”.
“This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, the quality of the playing and the enthusiasm of the audience combining to create an unforgettable atmosphere”.

Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s near 40 year collaboration is one of the most consequential in the history of jazz music.

The two had an uncanny symbiosis that sometimes verged on telepathy. Normally, the shy Strayhorn worked tirelessly in the background while the debonair Ellington performed in the limelight for audiences worldwide.

While the pair had already coproduced innumerable master works prior to 1960’s Nutcracker Suite, the release of this album marked the first time that Strayhorn appeared on the cover of an Ellington album. He is center stage, seated next to the maestro and smiling serenely.

In retrospect, Strayhorn had come up with the idea for the project and had arranged much of the music so it made sense to have his name in bright lights on the cover. However, this is the first public suggestion that Ellington was not the sole architect of his works.

This album is another first for Ellington as it represents the first time he had re-orchestrated the work of a major classical composer. He and Strayhorn adapt Tchaikovsky’s themes perfectly into the Ellingtonian swing style. There are bombastic full band performances in “Peanut Briddle Brigade” contrasted with the sparse and mysterious “Sugar Rum Cherry” and “Chinoiserie”. It is such a work of genius that you might even end up preferring it to the original.

This evenings performance will also feature Smith’s original compositions and other rarities from Ellington and the big band canon.

We have received the following information regarding this event;

Event 5.0, Season 4.0 - Oct 25th
midori jaeger – (Re)planted EP Launch
with support from Iris

This time we’ll be gathering for an early evening Sunday concert, beginning around 4:30pm and concluding before 9:30pm. A little later than our usual matinees, but still allowing plenty of time to ease gently into the working week ahead.

There’s something rather special about Sunday evenings. The weekend begins to slow, the pace softens, and there’s an opportunity to pause before the demands of Monday arrive. It feels like the perfect setting for the music we have planned.

I’m particularly excited about this one and delighted to finally share the details with newsletter subscribers before the public announcement tomorrow.

Originally from Japan and now based in London, cellist, singer and composer midori jaeger brings her (Re)planted EP Launch to Shrewsbury with her full band.

Drawing on influences from jazz, folk, contemporary classical music and electronics, midori creates immersive and deeply personal songs exploring themes of identity, belonging and place.

Her new double EP, (Re)planted, reflects on a childhood spent across multiple continents and the challenge of establishing roots in unfamiliar landscapes. Written at the cello—an instrument crafted from a once-living tree—the songs draw poignant parallels between the natural world and the human search for home, connection and self.
I’m delighted to announce that our next event will take place in October in the beautiful Darwin Room.

A genre-defying artist and collaborator, midori has performed with Imogen Heap, Courtney Pine, Daughter, Patrick Watson, Jessie Ware and Tanita Tikaram. Alongside her work as a performer, she also composes for film, dance and theatre.

READ IN APP

Hi,

I hope the start of summer is being kind to you and that you’ve been finding time to enjoy some of the gifts that come with this wonderful season of growth.

This newsletter is a little shorter than usual in some respects and rather longer in others. There are a few headlines about upcoming gigs, alongside a longer passage of reflection.

Sorry about that.

As many of you will know, these newsletters occasionally become a form of public journaling. Writing them helps me process things and, perhaps, may resonate with some of you too.

If reflections on mental wellbeing, self-doubt and the occasional wander through my inner landscape aren’t quite your bag, and I completely respect that they won’t be for everyone, please feel free to skip ahead and land on the recommendations and gig news section instead.

Early sell out - Event 4.0
First off, there are only a couple of tickets remaining for Event 4.0 on September 13th, a special matinee performance with Haiku Salut, Osgeld and Matt Sewell.

Being on the verge of an early sell-out is a welcome surprise. It’s been quite a while since that happened, and I’m genuinely grateful.

Moments like this are a reminder that there are people who continue to value these shared experiences and the opportunity to discover something a little different. Music that sits outside the mainstream. Music for the curious.

It’s also a reminder that community matters.

Behind every ticket sale is someone choosing to support independent artists, volunteer-led events, historic spaces and the idea that quality niche culture doesn’t only belong in cities or large venues.

To everyone who has already booked a ticket, shared a post, mentioned the event to a friend, or supported SY.Gigs in any way over the years, thank you. Your continued support never goes unnoticed.

If you’ve been meaning to join us in September, now would be a good time.

Aurelius Trio
Kidderminster Jazz Club
Fri, Nov 6 @ 7:00PM

Cornish double bassist and composer Marcus Penrose left the wild Atlantic coast for the bustle of London aged just 18. His trio, Aurelius grew from a long-standing musical bond with pianist Will Butterworth, forged twenty years ago in a smoky West London bar where they played together six nights a week. Performing there to the likes of Mick Jagger, Madonna, and Annie Lennox, along with pilgrimages to hear Paul Motian in mid-2000s New York shaped their jazz education. These experiences echo through the music of Aurelius, as they seek out beauty within the corners of their improvisations. Joined by kindred spirit drummer Peter Ibbetson, they embrace a sense of limitless musical possibility.

‘‘I think it sounds fantastic. All three are playing beautifully. Great sounds, compositions and beautiful use of space. Very happy to have heard it‘‘……. Larry Grenadier

” There’s a sense that this trio are being completely true to their musical selves. It’s a beautiful album, to be listened to again and again”…… London Jazz News

The Academy Award–winning Uruguayan singer and composer Jorge Drexler has announced he will return to London to perform at The Roundhouse on Tuesday October 27, 2026 as part of his international “TARACÁ” tour.

The show follows the arrival of Drexler’s new album TARACÁ, released in March 2026, which marks a new creative chapter in his career. On the album, Drexler returns to musical roots that have shaped his artistic identity while continuing to expand his sonic palette, with the Afro-Uruguayan rhythm of candombe running throughout the record.

Elena Beltrami, Director of Como No:
“We’re very happy to be bringing Jorge back to London. Over the years we’ve promoted several memorable shows with him in the UK, including his sold-out night at the Roundhouse in 2020. His concerts are always special, and it’s exciting to present this new chapter with the music of TARACÁ.”

The TARACÁ Tour sees Drexler performing with a seven-piece band, bringing the new album to life on stage while revisiting key moments from across his acclaimed catalogue.

The London show marks Drexler’s return to the Roundhouse following his sold-out performance at the venue in 2020, and continues a longstanding relationship with UK audiences following appearances at the Barbican, Cadogan Hall and Union Chapel.

About Jorge Drexler
Uruguayan singer, songwriter and composer Jorge Drexler is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Ibero-American music. Elles Bailey
7.30pm | Thursday 15th October 2026

Rising from the UK blues scene to international acclaim.
Backed by her road-honed band, singer-songwriter Elles Bailey’s raw, smoky vocals now sit at the centre of a sound that’s equal parts Southern soul, British grit, and pure authenticity.
There’s a steeliness that courses through Elles Bailey’s latest album, Can’t Take My Story Away. Fiercely independent, the British singer-songwriter has been steadily honing her craft for the better part of a decade.

Elles Bailey is a Bristol-born, award-winning independent singer-songwriter whose smoky voice and roots-influenced songwriting have made her a leading figure on the UK blues and Americana scene. A multiple UK Blues Award winner and inductee of the UK Blues Hall of Fame, she reached a new milestone with her 2024 album Beneath The Neon Glow, which charted at No. 12 on the UK Official Albums Chart and topped the Official Jazz & Blues Albums Chart.

In 2025 , she toured the UK supporting Brit Award winner Rag’n'Bone Man before releasing her fifth studio album, Can’t Take My Story Away, on 16 January 2026. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Official Jazz & Blues Albums Chart and the Record Store Chart, No. 2 on the Official Independent Chart, and No. 14 on the Official Albums Chart. Produced by Luke Potashnick and recorded with a stellar lineup of musicians, including renowned producer Ethan Jones, the eleven tracks of Can’t Take My Story Away tie together to form the album Elles was destined to make. Created over a three-year period, using songs whose origins date back almost ten years, it offers an honest and vulnerable glimpse into Bailey’s story.

The album has already received widespread acclaim, including 4 ★ revies from MOJO and The Sun, with MOJO praising Bailey: ‘‘Blessed with a voice that’s equal parts Etta James’s emotional gravity an Janis Joplin’s gritty power, Elles Bailey is a musical marvel.’‘

The release included a sold-out tour of record stores around the country, while the single ‘Growing Roots’ hit BBC Radio 2’s A-List and was the most-played track on the station for the first three weeks of 2026.

Following a hugely successful UK and European headlines tour with her long-standing band- playing to full rooms every night. Bailey will take the album further afield with US fesival appearances alongside Jason Isbell and Tedeschi Trucks Band, as well as additional US dates later this year with the legendary Judy Collins.

She is also set to play many festivals across the UK this summer, including State Fayre in Chelmsford alongside Alanis Morissette and Kings of Leon, and headlining Beardy Folk Fest, The British Country Music Festival and then continuing her headlines touring in Autumn 2026.

In addition to her recording and touring work, Elles Bailey is a regular presenter on Planet Rock radio, sharing her passion for blues, rock, and roots music with a national audience. Through her weekly show, she highlights both classic tracks and emerging artists, giving listeners insight into the songs and stories that have shaped her own musical journey.

With her third album Where Light Settles, released in May on Gondwana Records, composer, saxophonist, and bandleader Jasmine Myra steps boldly into a new chapter of her evolving artistic journey. Building on the critical acclaim of Horizons (2022) and Rising (2024), this latest release marks a confident and cohesive statement from one of the UK’s most distinctive contemporary voices.

Where Light Settles is Myra’s first self-produced album, with Matthew Halsall contributing as producer. Cinematic in scope, her music draws on a love of film scores and emotive storytelling, alongside inspirations ranging from contemporary jazz and folk to the textures of the natural world. Landscapes such as North Wales, the Lake District, and the South Downs inform the album’s tonal palette—echoing its central theme of beauty and intensity coexisting in balance.

From the delicate piano-led opening to the sweeping, hopeful title track, Where Light Settles unfolds with a quiet, autumnal glow - its melodies shimmering with clarity and purpose. As Myra continues to gain recognition both in the UK and internationally, this new work signals an artist fully coming into her own, inviting audiences into a deeply felt and vividly imagined sonic landscape.

Tommy Scott Trio
Mon 19th Oct
Tommy’s music takes listeners on a compelling journey, from sensitive and lyrical moods, to passionate and driving virtuosity. Although Tommy is influenced by the mainstream jazz tradition of Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner, his music also has elements of latin grooves and classical composition. For this performance, Tommy makes a rare return to his hometown of Cheltenham, featuring a trio with the amazingly talented Max Luthert on Bass, and Euan Palmer on Drums.
