“‘The World Is On Fire’ boasts the grit and conviction that have helped Collier stand out in an increasingly crowded field of younger artists engaging with the tradition of so-called spiritual jazz.” — The New York Times
“Collier is an imperious talent with outstanding musical ability to belie the sartorial splendor he deploys to get the message across.” — Downbeat
“Passionate music, much of it in the free-floating Pharoah Sanders vein, but often Collier’s rasping tenor spoke beautifully of injustice and human suffering.” — Jazzwise
“While there’s no mistaking this spiritual jazz recording from Isaiah Collier as belonging to any time other than the present, it evokes all kinds of old-school sessions by the likes of Lonnie Liston Smith and Pharoah Sanders.” — Bandcamp Daily
About Isaiah Collier:
Isaiah Collier is a multi-instrumentalist whose talent knows no bounds. From a young age, he was steeped in music, learning from his parents and honing his skills alongside his siblings. His journey with the saxophone began at the age of 11, setting him on a path that would lead to remarkable achievements. Drawing inspiration from jazz legends like John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, and Roscoe Mitchell, Collier’s sound is a testament to his deep respect for the rich history of the genre.
Throughout his career, Collier has graced prestigious stages around the world, from the White House to the Chicago Jazz Festival. His collaborations with esteemed musicians and his own projects, including Isaiah Collier & The Chosen Few, have garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated following. With albums like The Unapologetic Negro and Cosmic Transitions, Collier and his ensemble have captivated audiences with their soul-stirring compositions and electrifying performances.
In 2024, Collier presented his latest endeavors, two full-length albums The Almighty and The World is On Fire. The Almighty delves into the profound relationship between the divine and the everyday, exploring themes of spirituality and humanity through five original compositions. From the intricate melodies of “Duality Suite” to the grandeur of “The Almighty,” Collier and his ensemble invite listeners on a transcendent musical journey. The World is On Fire is Collier’s observation journal reflecting on the tumultuous period from before the pandemic to the present day. The title itself wields his lens on vile acts committed by those in power addressing themes of economic upheaval, systemic racism, and the relentless fight for justice. The potency of Collier’s compositions is reinforced by utilizing harrowing real-life news clips throughout the album that radiate the urgency, somberness, and turmoil during this time in history as the album as a whole serves as a requiem for countless lives lost and injustices that remain unacknowledged.
On December 5th, Collier presented the long-awaited debut of his 13-movement suite The Story of 400 Years at The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center in his hometown of Chicago, IL. Collier describes the production as a sonic time machine venturing from 1619 up until the present day. “The Story of 400 Years sounds like a powerful and evocative project. By blending sonic, visual, and spiritual elements, it is poised to explore the depth of America’s narrative, especially regarding the complex history of enslavement. Acknowledging this painful past while also envisioning a future free from its constraints is a vital endeavor,” says Collier. The suite showcases the progression of African Culture in America through pain, struggle, triumph, and beauty.
Additionally, Collier was named a 2024 Fellow of the Steve Jobs Archive. The mission of the SJA Fellowship is to support promising young people in their creative, professional, and personal development. Through this yearlong, non-residential program, SJA Fellows receive a stipend to pursue their ideas, a nationwide community of peers, individualized mentorship, and exposure to bold creative practitioners working across disciplines.
