Martin Speake’s Charukesi
PizzaExpress Jazz Club (Soho)
For 30 years alto saxophonist, composer and improviser Martin Speake has been exploring non-Western rhythmic and melodic approaches inspired by the music of many cultures. In particular Indian, Arabic, Turkish, African and jazz traditions. The latest incarnation is Charukesi, named after an Indian raga. Previous versions were Fever Pitch, Unison Quartet and Mafarowi. It is direct, groove based music with compelling and memorable melodies rooted in a dynamic tuba and drums rhythm section with impassioned soloing and interaction from guitarist Mike Outram, Alyson Cawley on tenor, and Martin’s alto saxophone.

Full Biography
Martin Speake first came to fame with the award-winning saxophone quartet Itchy Fingers in the 1980’s. He toured Europe, Africa and South America with them, recorded two albums Quark and Teranga and then left to concentrate on his own projects which have been many and diverse.
Martin is as comfortable playing the music of Charlie Parker, free improvising with Alex Maguire, Oren Marshall and Mark Sanders, Broadway songs with Colin Oxley or Ethan Iverson, Indian music with Dharambir Singh and Sarvar Sabri, and front a soon to be released big band recording and many other combinations including 30 albums under his own name. The internationally acclaimed ECM release Change of Heart with Paul Motian (previously with Bill Evans), Bobo Stenson and Mick Hutton and Intention (Ubuntu) with US pianist Ethan Iverson (previously The Bad Plus) increased his international exposure.
He has released many albums on his own label Pumpkin which began in 2007. This includes duos with saxophonist Alyson Cawley, pianists Alcyona Mick, Alex Maguire, Will Butterworth, violinist Faith Brackenbury, drummers Jeff Williams and Mark Sanders, trios with Mike Outram and Jeff Williams and another with drummer Phelan Burgoyne and cellist Matthew Forbes improvising on Bartok.
His current projects are Charukesi, Big Band, Quartet featuring Mike Outram, Tendrils duo with Alyson Cawley and Quintet celebrating Charlie Parker.
