Jazz at The Lescar upcoming gigs June - August 2025
25th June / Becca Wilkins’ Rêverie
Vocalist Becca Wilkins joins us on the final stop of her UK-wide album release tour. Rêverie presents the French Chanson made popular by Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf through the lens of contemporary jazz, including classics such as ‘La Bohème’ and ‘La Mer’; a perfect canvas for Becca’s skills as a song interpreter and improviser, and music that is both brooding and mysterious; vulnerable and atmospheric. Becca is joined by long-time collaborators and some of the finest emerging musicians on the UK and European contemporary jazz scene: Olly Chalk (piano/synths), Sam Ingvorsen (bass), and Billy Pod (drums). Rêverie is a chance to experience Becca’s ‘other worldliness’ (Jazzwise Magazine) in a heady collection of rhapsodic Franco-nostalgia. Don’t miss this brilliant quartet.
2nd July / Assembly Trio
Dynamic new music from a Sheffield-based trio who continue to push their music forwards and outwards, rooted in the jazz tradition, yet fearlessly exploring new territory, with memorable tunes sitting alongside unpredictable chaos, shifting interactions and a sense of the unexpected. Alex Bishop (guitar), Ben Evans (bass) and Will Shaw (drums) bring subversive compositions, and a real sense of spontaneity and in the moment reactivity.
9th July / Scuba
A fiery and un-categorisable mix of Salsa, Indian grooves and more introspective Scandinavian jazz, Scuba’s percussion driven sound takes in influences from Cuba to Norway and New York to the Middle East, via Eddie Palmieri, Michel Camilo and Keith Jarrett amongst others. Wowing festival audiences across Scotland, Scuba were formed by Ricky Linn to bring together percussion skills perfected in Mumbai and Havana with a line-up of exceptional soloists, and an experienced and passionate band featuring Paul Greenwood (Buddy Greco Heritage Orchestra, Cinematic Orchestra, Airto Moreira, Incognito, Paul Weller) on saxophone, Richard Bailey on piano, Seth Bennett (Sloth Racket, MoonMot, Johnny Hunter Quartet) on bass, and Paul Judge (drums).
16th July / The Anemone Quartet
Vibrant and expressive music from a brilliant new quartet, a collaboration between four of the most exciting and powerful improvisers on the UK scene, with double bassist Olie Brice (Jason Yarde, Evan Parker, Ingrid Laubrock, Ken Vandermark, Louis Moholo), pianist Laura Cole (Metamorphic, Corey Mwamba, Martin Archer) drummer Johnny Hunter (Sloth Racket, Nishla Smith, John Pope Quintet, MoonMot), and clarinettist / saxophonist / vocalist Faye MacCalman (Archipelago, Richard Dawson, Me Lost Me).
23rd July / Ali Watson Quartet
From the Glasgow jazz scene, led by bassist/composer Ali Watson, and with a beautiful album ‘Terrarium’ released in 2024; reflective, impressionist, very personal music full of lyrical folk melodies, colourful harmony, intimate instrumental textures and gently propellant grooves, played by some of the most celebrated and in-demand young voices in Scottish Jazz - multi-award winning Alan Benzie on piano, Edition Records saxophonist Matt Carmichael (Fergus McCreadie, WDR Big Band, corto.alto), and the highly sought after Greg Irons on drums. An antidote to the relentlessness and overstimulation of modern life, and an unmissable gig.
30th July / Mangorata
From the Leeds jazz scene, a bustling and joyous mix of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Swing and Funk grooves with inventive improvisation from a first class band of rising stars drawing inspiration from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wayne shorter, Hermeto Pascoal and many more. Their first EP was described as “First class” by Jazz FM’s John Osbourne. Mangorata feature James Absalom (tenor sax), Olivia Cuttill (trumpet), Liam Mason (piano), Chris Williams (bass), JJ Petrie (percussion) and Miles Pillinger (drums).
6th August / Inês Loubet Trio
Joyful music from Inês Loubet, a Portuguese singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer blending Latin-jazz, Tropicália, and soulful grooves to create a really distinctive sound. She visits us following the release of her debut album ‘Senga’, championed by DJ’s including Cerys Matthews, Craig Charles, and Gilles Peterson. Inês’ heartfelt storytelling and Brazilian inspired rhythms sit alongside poetic themes, lush harmonies, and compelling rhythms. She has collaborated with legends including Gilberto Gil, João Bosco, and Hamilton de Holanda and brings her long standing trio featuring Greg Sanders (Kadialy Kouyate, Namvula, Samba Azul) on guitar and Jansen Santana on percussion, a dynamic and energising presence, who brings the powerful influence of the music of Salvador, Bahia, in the Northeast region of Brazil.
