Following huge success as the first ever homegrown artist to play the Cheltenham Jazz Festival’s main Jazz Arena on May 5th (the closing night of the festival), with special guest Ashley Slater (Loose Tubes, Carla Bley, Norman Cook AKA Fatboy Slim), Kim is now set to release a live album ‘LIVE and Smiling’ and a new original single ‘On My Own Again’ - two hugely contrasting projects reflecting different angles of life, particularly working in the music industry.

“An ASTOUNDING performance at Cheltenham Jazz Festival”
Paul Baker – Mayor of Cheltenham

“You blew the roof off the Jazz Arena!”
Spencer Evans – Cheltenham Jazz

The ‘LIVE and Smiling’ album is a joyful collection of vibrant tracks, including originals and some well-known classics and funky grooves. It was recorded earlier this year at Peggy’s Skylight in Nottingham as part of two sellout shows from Kim’s ongoing ‘Catching Moments’ tour plus tracks recorded at her recent Cheltenham Jazz Festival performance. The album is an eclectic mix of jazz, Latin, blues, reggae, swing and funk, capturing the positive energy, good vibes and special moments shared together through music and audience connection, something which Kim is renowned for.

“Thank you for bringing such joy to Radio 4!”
Anita Rani – BBC 4

The live album represents the ‘visible’ side of the music industry – the live show. It also encapsulates the feelings of euphoria and camaraderie between your musical family on stage and the beautiful moments exchanged with an audience.

‘LIVE and Smiling’ boasts a star-studded lineup:

CHELTENHAM JAZZ FESTIVAL TRACKS
Kim Cypher – Tenor and Alto Saxophones
Ashley Slater – Trombone
Chris Santo Cobbson – Guitar
Alex Steele – Piano
Rob Rickenberg – Bass
Mike Cypher – Drums

PEGGY’S SKYLIGHT TRACKS
Kim Cypher – Tenor and Alto Saxophones and Vocals
Chris Santo Cobbson – Guitar
Richard Hughes – Piano
Mike Green – Bass
Mike Cypher – Drums

“Kim Cypher is a rare musical treasure”
David Freeman – Jazz FM

By contrast, the new original single ‘On My Own Again’ represents a side of the music industry which is not ‘visible’ - behind the scenes and in the artist’s own personal space. The soulful track and heartfelt lyrics are a poignant expression and reflection on the feeling of isolation in a tough world dominated by social media and constant scrutiny. When you are alone in a moment of contemplation, your mind can take over, distort reality and fill you with feelings of self-doubt and introversion.

This powerful, evocative original song has a blues/rock influence and is dominated by some signature raspy tenor saxophone playing by Kim throughout. It should also be mentioned that the track features a notable guitar solo by Clem Clempson.

“Hats off to a true heart and soul performer”
Pee Wee Ellis

The track was recorded at Temple Music Studios, following in the footsteps of one of Kim’s saxophone heroes, the late Barbara Thompson MBE, with the band personnel specifically chosen following Kim’s performance with members of Paraphernalia and Colosseum at the Barbara Thompson Memorial Concert at Union Chapel, London in 2023:

Kim Cypher – Vocals and Tenor Saxophone
Clem Clempson – Guitar
Pete Lemer – Hammond Organ and Fender Rhodes
Phil Mulford – Bass
Mike Cypher – Drums

These two contrasting projects, both released on Mean Reedz Records, represent the constant see-sawing and ups and downs of life…when two worlds collide! They are further examples of Kim’s continued devotion to celebrating creativity, working with a wide range of musicians and her unique diversity as an artist, composer, lyricist and producer.

“Always innovative and surprising”
Jazz Views
