Jazz trumpeter, composer and winner of the 2024 Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, Olivia Cuttill, announces the release of her new album – …And Writing And Singing And Tunes To Be Swingin’.
Influenced by the soul of New Orleans and the music of Louis Armstrong, Dr. John, Nina Simone and Randy Newman, Cuttill’s original compositions combine expressive trumpet improvisation with lyrical storytelling that explores themes of love, loss, stardom, hypochondria and gratitude.
…And Writing And Singing And Tunes To Be Swingin’ features a stellar line-up of musicians: Issey Chivers (vocals), Tom Harris (piano), Josh Vadiveloo (bass), Miles Pillinger (drums) and special guest Alex Fisher (tenor saxophone).
As the third generation in a family of musicians – all of whom appear on the album – Cuttill brings a personal, emotive touch to each track. Highlights include the gospel infused ‘Show Biz Casino’, a joyful celebration of life as a musical gamble; a witty vocalese twist on Bobby Timmons’ ‘Moanin’; and the heartwarming ‘There’s A House Down By The Station’, layered with recordings of Cuttill’s late grandfather, jazz pianist Geoff Cuttill. The album closes with a soulful rendition of ‘Cryin’ Time’, paying tribute to Olivia’s love for blues and country crossover, while tracks like ‘I’ve Won The Lottery’ and ‘The Boogie Woogie Bug’ celebrate the magic of family, swing and song.
…And Writing And Singing And Tunes To Be Swinging’ is released on Olivia Cuttill Music in association with ECN Music.
Supported by the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award (Help Musicians). Recorded by Samuel Newham at Green Room Studios, Leeds; mixed and co-produced by Ben Macdonald and mastered by Chris Sharkey.
