In September we reignite the electrifying Music of Weather Report featuring and directed by Alyn Cosker, and in December present Chasin’ the Horizon: The Railway Suite – celebrating the rhythms, stories and journeys that have inspired some of jazz’s most iconic works, while looking ahead to a greener future.
In the age of jazz fusion, a storm of creativity gathered on the musical horizon. That storm had a name: Weather Report. From the moment they emerged in 1970, they changed the forecast of modern music - electrifying, unpredictable, and utterly transformative.
Weather Report played their final notes in 1986 but their legacy lives on – echoing across time, like thunder that rumbles long after the flash. Scotland’s National Jazz Orchestra, directed by Alyn Cosker, forecasts a rekindling of that electrifying spirit with their concert, not of retrospection but of renewal and reimagining of Weather Report’s favourite tunes – including Birdland, the Badia/Boogie Woogie Waltz, and Teen Town.

For more than a century, jazz musicians have travelled the world by train, drawing inspiration from the distinctive rhythms, atmosphere, and romance of the rails and led to some iconic jazz works by Coltrane, Williams, Ellington, and others. Trains not only provided transport, but also became a powerful symbol of movement, progress, and musical exploration - connecting cities, cultures, and creative minds.
Today, as climate concerns grow, their legacy gains new relevance. The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra honours this through Chasin’ the Horizon: The Railway Suite, blending musical history with a commitment to sustainable touring. It’s a tribute to jazz’s past and a journey toward a greener future.
