Anthony Hervey
http://www.anthonyherveymusic.com
American trumpeter Anthony Hervey, named by Grammy.com in 2023 as one of the “10 Emerging Artists to Know,” has captivated audiences worldwide both as a sought-after sideman and a visionary bandleader. At the age of 18 he was admitted to The Juilliard School, graduating with his B.M. in 2019 and his M.M. in 2020. Frequently called upon to substitute for trumpet legend Wynton Marsalis, who has mentored him, Hervey has also toured, performed, and recorded with Christian McBride, Jon Batiste, and Michael Bublé.
As the leader of the Anthony Hervey Quintet, Hervey is celebrated for his original compositions that blend the complexities of jazz with a wide range of influences, from ragtime to R&B. His debut album, Words From My Horn, showcases his talents as both a trumpeter and composer, offering a rich fusion of soulful and cerebral pieces that uplift and inspire with warmth and optimism, all rooted in the blues. He performs regularly with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the Christian McBride Big Band, the Mingus Big Band, and the Future of Jazz Orchestra. His performances have graced New York City venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Blue Note, and Birdland, as well as international stages such as Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland, the Cotton Club in Tokyo, XJAZZ Berlin, the Marciac Jazz Festival in France, and the Monterey and Newport Jazz Festivals in the U.S.

Tommaso Starace’s Organ Trio has just released their new album, Live At The Beaver Inn (Dodicilune), earning glowing reviews for its energy, musicianship, and onstage chemistry.

This evening, the Trio celebrates the music of two architects of the hard bop idiom: Horace Silver and Benny Golson. Both leaders of their own groups, Silver and Golson first made their names with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in the mid-1950s. Silver co-founded the Messengers with Blakey, while Golson served as the group’s musical director. Tonight, the Trio will perform some of the most memorable compositions by these two jazz icons.

Throughout his career, Starace has collaborated with many leading international musicians, including Paolo Fresu, Dave O’Higgins, Billy Cobham, David Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann and Laurence Cottle, among many others. In 2004, he also collaborated with Oscar-winning composer Dario Marianelli on the score for the BBC drama This Little Life. In recognition of his contribution to music, he was awarded Honorary Membership of Birmingham Conservatoire in 2008.

A regular performer at international festivals and jazz clubs, Starace has developed an extensive and versatile discography, recording 11 albums to date as a bandleader, with projects ranging from quintet to duo. His work reflects a constant spirit of stylistic exploration, encompassing bebop, Latin influences, funk and sophisticated reinterpretations of the Jazz classics.

His most significant recordings include Simply Marvellous (celebrating the music of Michel Petrucciani), Blood & Champagne, The Power of Three, Narrow Escape and Italian Short Stories, alongside a number of projects paying tribute to influential figures in music and photography.

Tommaso Starace continues to perform regularly in concerts, festivals and productions throughout the UK and across Europe.

405: BAILE/home (Xenia Pestova Bennett, Yonit Kosovske, Lucia Capellaro), Késia Decoté + Kate Ledger
Saturday 31 October 2026
12:00 14:00
St John’s, Leytonstone
825 High Road Leytonstone London, E11 1HH

This October we’d like to invite you on a two-hour expedition into new music-making, exploring the themes of home, place and identity, played in part on a selection of very unexpected instruments. Immerse yourself in storytelling in sound that meditate on how music can be singular, spiritual and extremely precious.

Where is home? For millions of displaced people, this question is becoming increasingly difficult to answer. Renowned keyboard specialist Yonit Kosovske, viola da gamba virtuoso Lucia Capellaro and pianist and composer Xenia Pestova Bennett join forces to give a home to new music that combines contemporary and historical instruments. Xenia’s piece BAILE/home brings together stories of migration, memory, and (be)longing with text, field recordings and historical instruments, drawing listeners into sounds both old and new, humorous and serious, reflective and progressive. In this concert, harpsichordist Yonit Kosovske will also perform the world premiere of Mystic Sun by Graham Lynch.

‘a sense of place’ with Késia Decoté (piano, toy piano, video, electronics). The concept of ‘place’ can evoke different meanings and emotions. Késia explores varied aspects of ‘place’ through pieces for piano, toy piano, video and electronics, written by contemporary composers Sara González Salamanca, Alwynne Pritchard and Juan Vassallo. Through this programme, Késia invites her audience on a sonic journey into how place shapes identity, experience, and artistic expression.

Kate Ledger is a pianist and sonic artist specialising in embodiment, experimental music, spirituality, and creative collaboration. Her practice encompasses aspects of meditation, performance endurance, precarity, folklore and collective consciousness. Her recent album releases Unmeasured with Christopher Fox (HCR, 2025) and HEKATE’S VOICES with Ed Cooper (Sawyer Spaces, 2025) encapsulate her practice. She is based in Yorkshire.

Arctic Circle’s Daylight Music has, for over 17 years, become an important part of London’s live music scene, with a weird and wonderful mix of musicians presenting ideas and storytelling in music and sound, alongside delicious cake, in some of the most splendid and iconic venues.

Nu Civilisation Orchestra: The Stuart Hall Project

Experience a powerful fusion of film, music, and cultural history, as Tomorrow’s Warriors presents John Akomfrah’s ‘The Stuart Hall Project’ with Miles Davis’ soundtrack performed live.

100 years since the birth of Miles Davis, Peter Edwards and a five‑piece Nu Civilisation Orchestra Ensemble, featuring Mark Kavuma on trumpet, honour the jazz legend. John Akomfrah’s acclaimed 2013 documentary paints a portrait of Stuart Hall. The pioneering thinker and co‑founder of New Left Review is one of the most influential voices in British Cultural Studies. Layered with archival footage and Hall’s own reflections, the film explores identity, race, and belonging in a changing world.

Hall once remarked, ‘When I ask people where they’re from, I expect to be told an extremely long story.’ His lifelong exploration of identity finds a powerful counterpart in the shifting musical eras of Miles Davis, performed live to illuminate each chapter of Hall’s journey.

More than an accompaniment, the NCO Ensemble’s performance becomes an integral part of the experience. It deepens the film’s resonance and creates a vivid dialogue between music, ideas, and cultural change.

“..warm, natural and utterly comfortable..” - Rootsworld

“Outstanding” - Irish Music Magazine

“A gentle lulling delight” - The Guardian

Salt House has been a mainstay on the folk scene for over a decade. The band’s reputation as thoughtful and innovative interpreters of both old ballads and contemporary
songs has been solidified with acclaimed album releases and extensive touring. Described as a “gentle, lulling delight” by The Guardian, Salt House blend heartfelt vocal and instrumental interplay, offering listeners a moment of reflection and connection.

‘Share The Light’ is a joyful, peaceful and resonant journey of song and gathering, weaving together a spirit of community and light in the dark. For this tour the band bring
together songs for the winter that reflect both old ballads and fresh compositions, all delivered with a warmth that invites listeners into a shared space of connection and hope. Like a lantern in long nights the songs illuminate our common experience, reminding us that even when winter feels cold and dark, coming together can generate its own glow and quiet anticipation for the returning of the light.

Salt House’s sound is influenced by the landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, Northumberland and Shetland, the respective homes of band members Ewan MacPherson (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars), Anna Hughes (vocals, fiddle, viola, tenor guitar) and Jenny Sturgeon (vocals, keys, guitar). They incorporate their natural
surroundings into the fabric of the music that speaks of a shared love of place, people, and evolving tradition.

More about the band members:

Jenny Sturgeon, who has a PhD in seabird ecology, is known for her introspective solo work and collaborations with Birdvox and Outliers. Through her creative output as a
sound artist and songwriter she explores themes of landscape and human connections. Her solo project ‘The Living Mountain’ based on the writing of Nan Shepherd was
released to wide critical acclaim.

Anna Hughes, a versatile multi-instrumentalist and composer, draws on her transitory life experiences to create music that reflects forgotten landscapes and the wonders of the natural world. Working across multi-disciplinary projects Anna is a sought after collaborator as well as working with duo project Watersmeet.

Ewan MacPherson, is a multi-instrumentalist and singer with over two decades of experience working at the forefront of the folk / trad music scene. He toured extensively
with Shooglenifty for thirteen years, was a member of Malinky and Nu-Nordic Quartet Fribo. His session work includes working with a variety of artists from the British Isles and beyond. His most recent solo project album ‘Hushman’ was described by KLOF Magazine as “…a little masterpiece of confidence and understatement. Wonderful.”

Plague Doctors Cure All | Live at Hafan Yr Afon
Thu 05 Nov | Hafan Yr Afon

Prepared to be cured from the improvised rock/fusion sounds of Plague Doctors Cure All - Heavy grooves with a touch of gothic darkness.

Plague Doctors Cure All | Live at Hafan Yr Afon
November 5th | 7:30PM | £10/£12

Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
The saxophone, bass and the groove.
With the Plague Doctors playing
And wild riffs escaping,
A Thursday to shake up your mood.

Hear ye, good people of Newtown! Upon the fifth day of November, Plague Doctors Cure All shall assemble at Hafan Yr Afon, bearing a most curious prescription: deep draughts of groove, fierce measures of rock, and a potent fusion of jazz and funk.

These physicians of sound bring no ordinary remedy. The sax shall cry, the guitar shall roar, and bass and drums shall stir thy feet to mischief. Each musical potion shall be brewed upon the instant — improvised before thine ears, with neither player nor patient knowing whither the next turn shall lead.

Art thou afflicted with dull Thursdays? Hath thy spirit need of a little thunder? Then gather thy companions and submit thyself to the groove.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
The Doctors, their rhythm and rock;
With grooves most contagious
And fusion outrageous,
Let none keep an eye on the clock!

Claudia Lis
TonRaum
Gallery 2
26 September 2026 – 10 January 2027

A collaborative project between ceramicist Claudia Lis and composer/sound designer Barry Edwards.

“With my project ‘TonRaum’ (German for ‘Clay/Sound Space’) I set out to create a body of exhibition work in form of still-life arrangements, consisting of wheel-thrown vessels embedded into a soundscape of complementary musical compositions based entirely on recordings of sounds intrinsic to my ceramic making process.

Throughout the project, I have been working together with composer and sound designer Barry Edwards in jointly recording all sounds of my work in the studio environment – from the fierce roaring of my gas-fired kiln to the almost imperceptible sliding of hands over wet clay – thereby bringing the audible traces of my creative practice to the forefront as catalyst for me to make subtle new connections with my familiar materials, tools and processes.

Barry’s compositional work, which gradually evolved parallel to my ceramics in an interlocking, cross-genre process of mutual observation and inspiration, adds a new sonic dimension to my tranquil scenes of inter-related shapes, telling in a subliminal way the audible story of their making.”

Claudia trained as studio potter in 90s Germany before moving to the U.K. in the context of the EU-funded ‘Leonardo Da Vinci’ scheme. She worked for the following 7 years as personal assistant to Rupert Spira.

Since the launch of her studio in 2004 her work has been featured in numerous publications and exhibitions in the U.K., Europe, U.S.A. and Japan. Claudia is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association (CPA) and a selected member of the CAA. She received the Arts Council of Wales Creative Wales Award in 2012/13. Her work is included in the late Tony Birks Ceramics Collection held in trust for the Nation by the Sainsbury Centre For Visual Arts in Norwich. An accompanying 2021 publication Encounters with Ceramic – The Writings of Tony Birks is on display as part of this exhibition at Ruthin Craft Centre.

“Lis is an example of an artist whose ceramics can be put to use, but can also stand alone as fine objects. She avoids repeat ware by making sure that there is a variation in the families of forms. She likes to see them displayed in groups, which invites comparison with Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, but such is the intensity of the creative effort that there is no mistaking her work for that of anyone else.” - Tony Birks

NUEJAZZ Festival,various venues, Nuremberg, Germany.

Dates: Friday, October 23, 2026 - Wednesday, November 11, 2026

More details

We have received the following press release;

NUEJAZZ 2026

This year, Nuremberg’s NUEJAZZ Festival from October 23rd to November 11th is bigger, more diverse and more muscular than ever.

Then again, it has had 13 years of training. Jazz can be an astonishing number of things at once. Quiet and loud, a hundred years old and five minutes young, focused and unleashed, acoustic, electronic, complex or catchy. And sometimes all of these adjectives meet in a single piece of music. Without having to agree on much beforehand – there is plenty of room for everyone. And plenty of momentum, too. At the NUEJAZZ Festival in Nuremberg, this kind of flexibility has been part of the programme since 2013. That was when Frank Wuppinger and Marco Kühnl organised the first edition, united by one idea: jazz should not be treated as a closed musical genre, but as something open. Thirteen years later, that basic idea has grown into an established fixture on the German jazz scene. In 2024, NUEJAZZ even received the German Jazz Award for “Festival of the Year”.

It all began rather more pragmatically. After the end of Jazz Ost-West, Nuremberg was left without an international jazz festival. “As musicians, we simply had to step in and do something about it,” festival director Wuppinger recalls. Fair enough – others might have formed a working group first. Wuppinger and Kühnl simply got started. From the very beginning, however, it was never just about bringing international jazz greats to Nuremberg. That was part of it, of course, but there was more. NUEJAZZ was meant to look different, sound different and, above all, reach different people. “We wanted to create a modern festival for as diverse an audience as possible,” says Wuppinger. “Urban, modern, a little more muscular – also as a way of freeing jazz from its niche.” That also meant leaving familiar venues behind. NUEJAZZ moved into indie hotspots such as DESI and Z-Bau, and brought its programme to Kulturwerkstatt Auf AEG, Heizhaus and E-Werk in Erlangen. Suddenly, jazz was happening in the very places where culture, nightlife and urban life were already taking place. Rather than waiting for people to come to jazz, NUEJAZZ sent jazz out to meet them. Jazzalbum reviews

By now, it has become a festival where boundaries come with doors built in as standard. In 2026, a violin meets electronics, a piano trio meets rock. Bill Frisell demonstrates just how much can be contained in a single guitar note when you don’t immediately crowd it with five more. Nine female trumpet players share a stage. Funk, hip-hop, soul and gospel join the mix, while music encounters design and visual art. Children experience sound accompanied by live painting. Anyone who thinks jazz is something clearly defined will have plenty to reconsider. “For us, it simply isn’t a fixed stylistic category,” says Wuppinger. “Jazz is music that transcends cultural and social boundaries.”

And then, of course, there are two gentlemen this year who played a considerable part in making those boundaries so wonderfully fragile. Miles Davis and John Coltrane would both have turned one hundred in 2026. NUEJAZZ is therefore giving them a place of honour – although certainly not behind glass. Their music moves onto the stage, through a competition, into a reading and from there straight back into the present. At the NUECOMER Award “Miles & Trane”, students from Bavarian music academies explore their musical legacy. At MILES100, author Stefan Hentz approaches the life and work of the legendary Davis through his book, before Marco Kühnl and Estelle Dupont continue the story through music. All of which seems rather fitting for two musicians who rarely showed much interest in staying where things had become comfortable.

That idea runs through the entire festival. Young talents from Germany, France and Denmark come together to form the European Jazz Companions Orchestra. At the university session, the stage belongs to students; at the open Groove Gathering, the regional scene comes together. There is improvisation, discussion and reading. Musicians meet artists, emerging talent meets established names, Nuremberg meets open-minded guests from beyond the city. “We wanted to be more than just a regular festival,” Wuppinger explains. Perhaps that is why the most important word at NUEJAZZ is not actually “jazz”, but “and”. Jazz and electronics. Music and image. Emerging talent and international stars. Nuremberg and Europe. Concerts and education. Tradition and the pressing question of what to do with it here and now. NUEJAZZ does not try to artificially make jazz young again. No one is going to set up a TikTok account for Miles Davis after the fact, don’t worry. Instead, the festival gives the art form the environment it naturally belongs in: as music that lives through being passed on – and through constantly changing in the process. Jazzalbum reviews

Welsh bassist Ursula Harrison is joined by Swedish guitarist Thi Johansson to perform the music of both of their home countries, with a heavy dose of improvisation to tie things together. The two met while studying in Trondheim, Norway and instantly bonded over a shared, yet unusual combination of influences: singer-songwriter music and avant-garde free improvisation. This is what they will present in this concert, a totally impromptu set, weaving between folk melodies, original compositions and standards from the singer-songwriter and jazz traditions.

Rattle + Hurricane Tapes at Weirdshire, The Jam Factory, Hereford.

Date: Thursday, November 12, 2026

More details

We have received the following information regarding this event;

we’ve been wanting to bring the brilliant Rattle to Weirdshire for ages, and just haven’t quite managed to get the dates to work out. They are a fabulous duo of two drummers, both using their voices as well. The propulsive energy they create has to be witnessed, and then never forgotten. Their latest album (Encircle) was released on Upset the Rhythm, and they’re currently touring in Europe.

Reviewed in the Quietus and described thus:
“You could view Encircle as a rallying cry in the face of technofascism, encouraging a return to something analogue, simple and earthy. The simplicity is powerful, offering what a distracted mind often misses by maintaining a steady, consistent rhythm. There are no flashy fills or unnecessary embellishments; instead, the third member is space, allowing us to reflect on what truly matters.”

And not only that, but opening the evening on 12th November will be local post-punk/shoegaze heroes Hurricane Tapes - another band we’ve been trying to work out dates to play a Weirdshire show, and this one has worked out perfectly. They’ve got loads of new stuff they’re really excited about bringing to this show, and it’s going to altogether be an absolute blast.

HOORAY! After too long a wait (I’ve been so very busy and the time has flown by this year) I’m excited to announce the next AOTA gig - and the perfect precursor to January’s Bath Jazz Weekend - the multi-talented, multi-European quartet
SMIODAIR
featuring saxophonist Robin Fincker (from Paris), bassist Simon Jermyn (from Dublin and Berlin) and, from the jazziest town in Britain*, trumpeter Laura Jurd and Dave Smith (drums) - four superb exponents of the improviser’s art, on a national tour, playing music that ranges from thunderingly enjoyable grooves to exquisite sonic soundscapes.
* Yes, of course Frome, now home to more incredible jazz talents than you can shake a drumstick at.

Playing for AOTA, for the first time ‘in the round’, in an acoustic set that will allow the audience to get as close as possible to their collective sound, the quartet will feature their own original music that weaves mysteriously between composition and improvisation.

Smiodair is an international group with roots that go back over twenty years. Drummer Dave Smith and saxophonist Robin Fincker first played together at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, going on to co-found the Loop Collective in London in 2005 — a venue, festival and record label that became a hub for the UK and European creative music scene. Bassist Simon Jermyn came into the fold through a collaboration between Dublin’s Bottlenote Collective and the Loop Collective in 2006, before a decade in New York and a move to Berlin that took his playing to new places. For their UK tour in November 2026, the trio expands to a quartet with the addition of trumpeter Laura Jurd — one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British jazz.

The word Smiodair — from the Irish for fragments or small pieces — captures something true about musicians whose paths have diverged and reconnected across London, Paris, Dublin, New York, Berlin and, as ever, Frome.*

Here’s the ticket link again. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Info >

In a beautiful St Hilda’s Church, in Crofton Park, guitarist/composer Branco Stoysin, life-long aficionado of Nikola Tesla, performs his epic new music/video movie project Aurora Tesla, that in the most lyrical, illuminating and concise way tells the story about Nikola Tesla, Serbian born genius of electricity. It’s a poignant and a sole tribute, marking 170 years since the birth of Nikola Tesla and 130 years since the birth of modern civilisation with the implementation of Nikola Tesla’s Polyphase Alternating Current System on The Niagara Falls in 1896. On this day, the 15th of November 1896, 130 years ago, the very first kilowatts of the electricity, derived from Nikola Tesla’s Electricity Power system that harnessed the Niagara Falls, were distributed from Niagara Falls Hydroelectric Power Plant, to 40 Km away the Buffalo state of New York, marking the birth of modern civilisation. This is the very same electricity power system that’s been in use throughout the whole world for 130 years, and in the UK too :>) Every pylon, everywhere around the world, carries Tesla’s blood, The Electricity, to lighten your existence.

Branco will also play the tunes from his previous eight CD albums and from his recent, triple anniversary, the ninth CD album, Whispers From The Sun, which marked 40 years of music art making, of those 30 years in London. As an avid photographer and naturalist, for the finale of recital, Branco will perform special three music/video movies projects depicting the beautiful natural world right on our doorsteps. A recital for an audio and visual delight.

“A musical journey to warm the soul” Sarah Ward, Jazz FM.

“Music of great delicacy and charm” Chris Parker.

“The sound of a master craftsman at work”
“Stoysin’s music is a welcome and beautiful constant in a rapidly changing world”
Ian Mann.

Dave Jones Stratospheric @TheCafé
Critically acclaimed Welsh keyboardist/composer Dave Jones and his newest band ‘Stratospheric’ play their own exciting brand of jazz-influenced progressive rock. The material is original Prog Rock, played by a line-up who are essentially jazz musicians that work in a broad range of musical styles.

‘Stratospheric’ has a great line-up (in fact more of a pool of musicians who share the gigs) including those musicians who were involved in recording at the very start of this project, alongside those who joined later for the first live performances in 2026. Between them all, their other work has seen them involved in performing/recording with e.g. Portishead, Jethro Tull, Toyah, Kasabian, Goldfrapp, and the late great rock and jazz session bassist Herbie Flowers.

Tonight’s expected line-up is …
Ben Waghorn (saxes, flute)
Tim Rose (guitar)
Dave Jones (keyboards)
Ashley John Long (bass)
Scott Hammond (drums)

The track ‘Trepidation/74 Heist’ from the new ‘Stratospheric’ vinyl album recently won Prog magazine’s ’Tracks of the Week’ feature, and the album has attracted great reviews in both the same magazine and in the online magazine ‘Jazz Views’, explaining the music from two different viewpoints.

Dave has composed a great deal of other music, both for his own jazz ensembles and for solo piano, and also for tv and film, having tracks used worldwide in productions for major networks, including e.g. The Big Bang Theory, news and current affairs programmes in Japan and Europe, and lifestyle programmes in the UK, alongside films including the Hollywood movie ‘Nuremberg’ (2026) with his piano piece ‘Paradise Found’.

Tapas option: Enjoy a Mediterranean selection of warm bread, mixed Italian olives, feta cheese and sun-dried tomatoes to share.

Nov 29th - Event 7.0 Momen + Rhubiqs

Momen is the London-based duo of Iván Muela (piano/guitar/electronics) and Nat Philipps (saxophone/electronics), who balance poise and catharsis throughout the eight movements of their début album, Sympathetic Resonance. Equally inspired by Bach, Sakamoto, and time spent in post-punk bands, their world of jazz-influenced experimentation and spacious ambient textures thrives on the subtle transformations embedded within apparent stillness.
https://tinangelrecords.bandcamp.com/album/sympathetic-resonance

Support comes from Rhubiqs, the solo project of London-based composer and sound designer Tom Squires.

Squires’ music creates a world where Actress meets Kranky, with a side dose of Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works for good measure. These are far-reaching electronic and ambient sounds that provide immersive soundscapes for listeners to lose themselves in amidst thought-provoking textures, samples and field recordings.

Jazz at Progress | Jazz at Progress | Benn Clatworthy Quartet | Tickets on sale soon
Friday 19 March 2027 | Progress Theatre, Reading | 7: 30pm | £20.00, £18.00 concessions, £10 under 16 plus 3.5% booking fee.
Benn Clatworthy tenor sax | Alex Hutton piano | Simon Thorpe bass | Matt Home drums
Benn was active in the London Music Scene in the 1970’s and was a protégé of Ronnie Scott. He moved to L.A. California in 1980 where he is now based. He was recommended for Horace Silver’s band and recordings followed. Having skills as a multi-instrumentalist (tenor, alto, baritone sax, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet) he has carved a career in the L.A music scene. He has worked with a huge array of class A musicians from the LA Philharmonic Orchestra to Cab Calloway. However, his main passion is playing Tenor Sax in a quartet setting – and his approach is unique. Playing from the songbook of Blue Note and more contemporary jazz, his tone is extraordinarily beautiful, and his melodic ideas come from the heart. As someone said recently ‘It’s as though he’s talking to us and telling us a story through the saxophone!’
Benn is joined by Alex Hutton (piano), Simon Thorpe (bass) and Matt Home (drums).
Alex Hutton is an established pianist on the London Jazz scene. Over the past 10 years, he has worked with most of the leading figures including Jim Mullen, Pete King and more. He began playing piano at the age of five. After completing a BA Hons degree in American studies, he turned his focus fully to jazz piano – winning praise from the late Ronnie Scott.
Simon Thorpe has worked with many of the great UK and US names in jazz, recording and touring. Outside the jazz sphere he has played with artists as diverse as Amy Winehouse, Imelda Staunton, Alexander Armstrong, Mica Paris, Sean McGowan, Rick Astley and more. He writes the music arrangements for Mitch Winehouse’s 7-piece band and he has also been a composer. Simon has written music for theatre, jazz ensembles, BBC TV and BAFTA award winning short film Wedding Espresso.
Matt Home was born in West Yorkshire. He started playing drums at the age of eight. After taking private lessons, he enrolled on a course in Jazz and popular music, graduating in 1994. He soon began playing professionally in Leeds, before moving to London. Matt has played with many of the leading musicians in London, UK and Europe including Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen and more. He has played with many US artists and has played in clubs, theatres and jazz festivals.

The latest incarnation is Charukesi, named after an Indian raga. It is direct, groove-based music with compelling and memorable melodies rooted in a dynamic tuba and drums rhythm section with impassioned soloing and interaction from Alyson Cawley’s tenor, Mike Outram’s guitar and Martin’s alto saxophone.

Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s near 40 year collaboration is one of the most consequential in the history of jazz music.

The two had an uncanny symbiosis that sometimes verged on telepathy. Normally, the shy Strayhorn worked tirelessly in the background while the debonair Ellington performed in the limelight for audiences worldwide.

While the pair had already coproduced innumerable master works prior to 1960’s Nutcracker Suite, the release of this album marked the first time that Strayhorn appeared on the cover of an Ellington album. He is center stage, seated next to the maestro and smiling serenely.

In retrospect, Strayhorn had come up with the idea for the project and had arranged much of the music so it made sense to have his name in bright lights on the cover. However, this is the first public suggestion that Ellington was not the sole architect of his works.

This album is another first for Ellington as it represents the first time he had re-orchestrated the work of a major classical composer. He and Strayhorn adapt Tchaikovsky’s themes perfectly into the Ellingtonian swing style. There are bombastic full band performances in “Peanut Briddle Brigade” contrasted with the sparse and mysterious “Sugar Rum Cherry” and “Chinoiserie”. It is such a work of genius that you might even end up preferring it to the original.

This evenings performance will also feature Smith’s original compositions and other rarities from Ellington and the big band canon.

Aurelius Trio
Kidderminster Jazz Club
Fri, Nov 6 @ 7:00PM

Cornish double bassist and composer Marcus Penrose left the wild Atlantic coast for the bustle of London aged just 18. His trio, Aurelius grew from a long-standing musical bond with pianist Will Butterworth, forged twenty years ago in a smoky West London bar where they played together six nights a week. Performing there to the likes of Mick Jagger, Madonna, and Annie Lennox, along with pilgrimages to hear Paul Motian in mid-2000s New York shaped their jazz education. These experiences echo through the music of Aurelius, as they seek out beauty within the corners of their improvisations. Joined by kindred spirit drummer Peter Ibbetson, they embrace a sense of limitless musical possibility.

‘‘I think it sounds fantastic. All three are playing beautifully. Great sounds, compositions and beautiful use of space. Very happy to have heard it‘‘……. Larry Grenadier

” There’s a sense that this trio are being completely true to their musical selves. It’s a beautiful album, to be listened to again and again”…… London Jazz News

With her third album Where Light Settles, released in May on Gondwana Records, composer, saxophonist, and bandleader Jasmine Myra steps boldly into a new chapter of her evolving artistic journey. Building on the critical acclaim of Horizons (2022) and Rising (2024), this latest release marks a confident and cohesive statement from one of the UK’s most distinctive contemporary voices.

Where Light Settles is Myra’s first self-produced album, with Matthew Halsall contributing as producer. Cinematic in scope, her music draws on a love of film scores and emotive storytelling, alongside inspirations ranging from contemporary jazz and folk to the textures of the natural world. Landscapes such as North Wales, the Lake District, and the South Downs inform the album’s tonal palette—echoing its central theme of beauty and intensity coexisting in balance.

From the delicate piano-led opening to the sweeping, hopeful title track, Where Light Settles unfolds with a quiet, autumnal glow - its melodies shimmering with clarity and purpose. As Myra continues to gain recognition both in the UK and internationally, this new work signals an artist fully coming into her own, inviting audiences into a deeply felt and vividly imagined sonic landscape.
