Birmingham Jazz is running a series of events throughout October 2026 across various venues to celebrate Black History Month. Further information attached.

Birmingham Jazz Celebrate Black History Month

Alongside their extended programming this season celebrating 50 years of the club, Birmingham Jazz is running a series of events throughout October across various venues to celebrate Black History Month. Supported with funding from Arts Council England, the series with the theme “Honouring Our Communities” starts on Friday 2nd October with Xhosa Cole performing his Free Monk project at 1000 Trades in the Jewellery Quarter. On Saturday 3rd, Deirdre Cartwright brings her ‘Picnic’ to the club, marking 50 years of her collaboration with Alison Rayner.

In a joint promotion with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, on Thursday 8th the Birmingham Jazz Orchestra will perform in the Conservatoire’s Recital Hall in an evening programme starting in the Eastside Jazz Club with the Zeb Murphy Band and closing with a jam session in the same venue.

On Wednesday 14th, Josh Bailey brings his trio to a new venue for the club, under the name Bearwood Jazz, at 1000 Trades In The Park on Adkins Lane (see feature below).

Back at the club’s regular venue, 1000 Trades, Rwandan-born and Belgian-raised vocalist Ineza will perform songs from her debut album Ibuka, released last year, on Friday 23rd. The following evening, Ralph DeCambre’s ’Friends’ will be making their annual Black History Month appearance at the club. Mark Cherrie closes out the month on Friday 30th, but another gig has been included in the series at the end of November, featuring Basil Hodge’s Jazz Africa on Friday 30th November.
