Cheltenham Jazz Club are pleased to open the first quarter of our 2026 season with three new and exiting bands where you can again experience and listen to live jazz.
Thank you to everyone who have supported us and the musicians at our previous gigs in 2025 and the preceding 40+ years.

THE SAM BRAYSHER QUARTET

Sam Braysher, is a London-based alto saxophonist, who has received widespread critical acclaim for his three albums to date. His warm tone and consonant and inquisitive approach to harmony is attracting growing attention on the British jazz scene.Accompanying is an all-star rhythm section, comprising Hungarian pianist Matyas Gayer (Eddie Henderson, Jim Rotondi), MOBO award-winning bassist Tom Farmer (EMPIRICAL, Joe Stilgoe) and ultra swinging drummer Steve Brown (Barry Harris, Scott Hamilton).Sam’s latest album explores the work of Kurt Weill, a fascinating composer who lies at the intersection of European classical music, jazz, opera and American musical theatre. Expect to hear classic songs and hidden gems from the Weill catalogue, as well as music by adjacent American Broadway composers like Rodgers & Hammerstein, Gershwin and Harold Arlen.

London-born Alex Hitchcock is an instantly recognisable improviser and a leading international voice on the saxophone. An Ivor Novello-nominated composer, his innovative collaborations highlight his reputation as a catalyst for boundary-pushing musical encounters. He lives in London, UK and regularly performs at jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals in the and throughout Europe, leading groups at Umbria Jazz Festival, Love Supreme Festival, and Ronnie Scott’s also performing at North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne and Glastonbury Festival amongst many others.

THE HANS KOLLER “MONK”  QUARTET

Well-established pianist/composer Hans Koller is a highly respected musician on the UK jazz scene. With over 16 critically acclaimed albums his sparkling cv includes work with a host of high-profile international artists, including the likes of Bill Frisell, Steve Swallow, Bob Brookmeyer, Mike Gibbs and Kenny Wheeler. Tonight Hans joins forces with the multiple Award-winning saxophonist Tony Kofi (World Saxophone Quartet, The Jazz Warriors, Gary Cosby’s Nu Troop) to perform music celebrating the great US pianist/composer Thelonious Monk. Along with these two master musicians, the bassist/composer/arranger Calum Gourlay, widely considered to be one of the leading bass players of his generation, and the amazing young drummer Noah Ojumu will complete this superb quartet.  The band will explore some of the lesser known Monk tunes, and will offer their fresh take on this iconic music.
