Jazz Rising Star - Phil Meadows

The winners of this year’s prestigious London Music Awards (LMAs) were announced on11th June during an awards evening held at the Camden Roundhouse. Presented by Laura Whitmore and with speeches from London Mayor Boris Johnson (who established the fund in 2014 to support music across the capital) the evening hosted several performances from all over London, opened by NYJO London directed by Phil Meadows.

Awards were given in several categories (see below for full list of recipients) with the London Music Award for Rising Jazz Star being awarded to saxophonist and composer Phil Meadows:

“I’m incredibly humbled to receive the Jazz Rising Star at the London Music Awards. London is packed full of some of the worlds most inspiring musicians and it’s a real honour to be recognised for the music i’ve been making with both my group and the Engines Orchestra. A huge thank you to the judges and to Help Musicians UK for nominating me.
It’s brilliant that jazz music has it’s own award alongside the classical, songwriting/composition, dance/electronica and pop/rock categories. Most people don’t realise that despite being one of the most creative, jazz is a hugely underfunded art-form and many musicians struggle to make ends meet through the music alone. It’s one of the toughest genres to make a career in and we need all the support we can get to keep the music developing, reach new audiences and inspire generations to come. I believe that together this is something we can definitely achieve and urge you all to support your local scene. Thank you to the Mayor’s Music Fund for including jazz music in their awards.”

Ian adds;
Congratulations to Phil on the granting of this award. A just reward for the quality of the music he has written, performed and recorded both with his regular working group and with the larger Engines Orchestra. I was fortunate enough to witness a superb concert featuring both ensembles at Kings Place as part of the 2014 EFG London Jazz Festival.
