Gypsy Jazz weekend in Shrewsbury

Billed as ‘The very best in the world of Gypsy Jazz’, the Shrewsbury Django Fest starts on Friday, with six evening performances over the weekend at St Mary’s Church and daytime jam sessions at The Bull Inn, Glou Glou Wine Bar and The Nags Head.

The festival is the culmination of a six-day Gypsy Jazz Retreat for guitarists, organised by Chris Quinn, which runs from Wednesday to Monday with tuition from Chris along with Mozes Rosenberg, Olli Soikkeli, Paulus Schäffer, Christiaan Van Hemert and John Wheatcroft (who, incidentally, will be appearing at The Marr’s Bar with Baiana, as we close out our ‘Brazilian Love Affair’ on Thursday 12 November).

Friday starts at 7pm with the John Wheatcroft Trio featuring Olivia Francis Brown. Friday’s headliner, starting at 9:15pm, is the Mozes Rosenburg Trio with Christiaan Van Hemert.

Saturday’s music starts with jam sessions at Glou Glou Wine Bar and The Bull Inn, from 12pm-5pm. In the evening at St Mary’s Church, Marion & Sobo Band start at 6:30pm with Paulus Schäffer & Olli Soikkeli on at 9:15.

On Sunday afternoon, 12-5pm, there are jam sessions at The Nags Head and The Bull Inn. In the evening, a special concert featuring the Retreat Attendees at 5pm will be followed by the Marion & Sobo Band and an “All Star Jam” grand finale.
