Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club today announces the return of its street party, a free outdoor event taking place on Frith Street in Soho on Saturday 2 August 2025. The all-day event will showcase a diverse cross section of the UK jazz scene, featuring performances by both up-and-coming talents and established stars, alongside DJ sets, family activities, outdoor bars, and street food.

Following the runaway success of the first edition in 2019, which marked the club’s 60th anniversary and saw 5000 music fans in attendance, this year’s event serves as a thank you to the thousands of members and customers who continue to support the club and keep it at the heart of London’s live jazz scene.

The live music line-up spans the breadth of the UK jazz community, with sets from pioneering mento, ska, reggae, and jazz collective Jazz Jamaica, celebrated tuba virtuoso Theon Cross, genre-blending band Cosmic Fusion, the inspiring Tomorrow’s Warriors Youth Ensemble and youth music charity group Kinetika Bloco. DJ AG, who has created a stir with his spontaneous outdoor sets and viral online performances, will provide additional music throughout the day.

The Ronnie Scott’s Street Party will take place from 11am until 5pm on Saturday 2 August 2025 on Frith Street, Soho. Entry is free and no tickets are required.

We are delighted to have Robert Castelli return with his BOOM UK band for the third show in our Re:Play series featuring five select bands who performed in the first year of Music Spoken Here at The Marr’s Bar.

Hailing from New York, with Italian heritage and now living in Spain, third-generation drummer Robert named his band BOOM inspired by the short-lived 1979’ Trio of Doom’ (John McLaughlin, Tony Williams and Jaco Pastorius). The concept is based on the energy of the music.

Robert explains: “Sometimes you go to a club and there’s a band playing and you hear people talking and glasses clinking. Then you see another band, they are not louder, but all of a sudden, an electricity goes through the room and everybody is quiet. That’s Boom.”

The UK BOOM lineup features Francesco LoCastro on guitar, Marco Marconi on piano and Jonny Wickham on bass. While this will be the second appearance of BOOM on the Music Spokem Here program, it will be the third appearance for both Francesco who brought his own quartet up in May 2023 and Jonny, who appeared with Steve Taylor’s Fusion Phew in May 2024.

Tessa Souter Trio will be performing at Mezzrow in NYC on Sunday, July 27, just one month after the release of her latest album, Shadows and Silence: The Erik Satie Project. Tessa’s trio is rounded out by Luis Perdomo piano and Mimi Jones bass. There are two sets at 6:30PM and 7:00PM.

On Shadows and Silence: The Erik Satie Project, her sixth album as a leader, Tessa Souter continues to explore her penchant for collaborating with a broad range of renowned composers, both living and dead. Celebrated for her “startlingly fresh and poetic lyrics” (Michael J. West, Washington City Paper), her words to Wayne Shorter’s “Ana Maria,” impressed the late composer so much, he granted her shared writing credit. Souter’s version of that song on her album Picture in Black and White attracted the attention of Kurt Elling who recorded it on his GRAMMY-nominated Wildflowers Volume 1 album. Her lyrics to Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez” elicited a personal thank you letter from his daughter, Cecilia. Now, precisely 100 years after his death, she has turned her attention to the music of eccentric French composer, Erik Satie, appending her haunting lyrics to new incarnations of some of his best-known works.

Souter first fell under the spell of Satie when she heard a wordless vocal version of “Gnossienne No. 1” by French singer Anne DuCros two decades ago. Intrigued, she began to write lyrics. She was inspired to write a lyric to “Gymnopedie No. 1” for bassist Yasushi Nakamura’s newborn son, celebrating the miracle of birth, and the optimism of a new father looking forward to the joys of parenthood. Over the next four years she wrote lyrics to “Gnossienne No. 2,” “Gnossienne No. 3,” “Gymnopedie No. 3,” and Ron Carter’s “Mood” all of which reflected what was happening in her life at the time​, against the backdrop of COVID—including the deaths of two of her dearest friends and her mother, who died after a long illness, just as she was finishing the album last June.

The demise and death of Souter’s mother looms movingly over the album, nowhere more than on “If You Go Away (Ne Me Quitte Pas),” the immortal Jacques Brel ballad best known in versions by Édith Piaf and Nina Simone. The song was a favorite of her mother’s, and the only track on the album that she heard, days before her passing. Mother and daughter had sung it together over the phone earlier, an enduring memory from those final months. Both it and Léo Ferré’s “Avec le Temps” are especially meaningful inclusions.

“The more I got to know Satie, the more I wanted to acknowledge not only his music, but the man himself,” says Souter. “I could identify with his nomadic childhood (I went to 16 schools before the age of 15) and the coming and going of important caretakers. He also reminded me of the eccentric figures I attached myself to as a small child, in particular an artist friend of my parents who, like Satie (and me), loved animals​. He fed ​the foxes in his garden with meat he’d shoplifted from a local supermarket.” And like Satie, he fell in love only once and never again.

Revisiting Miles Davis’ E.S.P. in light of her Satie listening, Souter found that two tracks – Ron Carter’s “Mood,” and Wayne Shorter’s title track – shared with Satie a surface simplicity masking surprising depths and complexity. Both make perfect complements to the album – “Mood” with Souter’s lyric as “Musica Universalis” and “E.S.P.” in the form of Cassandra Wilson’s “Never Broken.”

Tessa Souter is a 2025 Artistic Projects Program grantee from Chamber Music America funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

The celebrated jazz talent development organisation, charity and creative producer Tomorrow’s Warriors announced today Harlem Renaissance: A 100 Year Revolution, featuring Nu Civilisation Orchestra (NCO), Bonnie Greer, Peter Edwards, CHERISE, Valerie Ebuwa, Soweto Kinch, Theon Cross & more special guests to mark the centenary of the Harlem Renaissance - a seismic cultural revolution, that shook a city and woke up a nation. The effects of the Harlem Renaissance can still be felt across the world to this day and Tomorrow’s Warriors will celebrate its impact across an ambitious and innovative weekend programme of music, dance and discussion, with two concerts and a panel discussion on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September 2025.

The weekend will open with A 100 Year Revolution: The Harlem Renaissance - a panel discussion on Saturday 13th September at 2pm in the Purcell Room, at Southbank Centre, tracing the 100-year cultural impact of the Harlem Renaissance and its relevance today. Panellists include Bonnie Greer OBE, Margaret Busby CBE, Soweto Kinch and Kevin Le Gendre. The discussion will explore the origins of the Harlem Renaissance and how the Black creative revolution in 1920s New York transformed the world. Topics will include the cultural influence on Black British identity, the impact of transatlantic artistic exchanges and the role of the creative arts in cultural solidarity.

In the evening in Queen Elizabeth Hall, Tomorrow’s Warriors presents The Blackbird and The Duke with Nu Civilisation Orchestra led by Peter Edwards. The first set will premiere The Blackbird of Harlem – a staged concert telling the incredible story of the trailblazing international artist and activist, Florence Mills, through narration, music, dance and visuals featuring Bonnie Greer OBE (playwright, author, broadcaster, critic), CHERISE (artist and composer) and dancer and choreographer Valerie Ebuwa (Clod Ensemble).

Florence Mills’ story of outstanding talent, the pursuit of equality and extraordinary resilience is brought to life by creative Director and Dramaturg Patricia Cumper.  From Florence’s early years in Vaudeville, through to her performances on Broadway in Shuffle Along and subsequent international headline shows, The Blackbird of Harlem tells the little-known story of the life of the singer, dancer, and formidable campaigner for equal rights for African Americans.

The second set will feature two seminal Duke Ellington works; A Tone Parallel To Harlem and Black, Brown and Beige. Duke Ellington composed A Tone Parallel to Harlem in 1951, capturing the transformative essence and soundscape of the times. Black, Brown and Beige charts through music the social narrative of African American history. From the burden and oppression of Work Song and the prayer for salvation of Come Sunday, the story shifts to the patriotic Black Americans fighting in the Revolutionary and Civil wars. The final chapter covers the Great Migration and the movement of Black Americans into the city – arriving in Harlem, hungry for a cultural awakening and revolution, that would shape the identity of African Americans to this day.

Finally, closing the weekend will be Tomorrow’s Warriors & Soweto Kinch: Harlem Now! on Sunday early evening at Queen Elizabeth Hall, curated by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch with a host of special guests including acclaimed tuba player and composer Theon Cross, to explore the ongoing musical and cultural impact of the Harlem Renaissance through the lens of today’s artists.

Soweto Kinch brings a deep understanding of how incredibly profound the influence of the Harlem Renaissance was and continues to be, he said “Despite being far away and a century in the past, the Harlem Renaissance is still powerfully relevant today.  The Harlem renaissance casts such a long cultural shadow it’s still highly relevant in today’s world: from Duke Ellington’s music to Langston Hughes’ poetry and Zora Neale Hurst’s folklore - it represented a genuinely revolutionary flowering of artistic expression. It defied preconceptions about what can emerge from ‘ghettos’ - leaving us with cultural innovations which still are ground-breaking in today’s world. Much of contemporary syncopated dance music and culture we take for granted today has its origins in the jazz, dance, and style of 1920s and 30s Harlem. Part of what makes the Harlem Renaissance so resonant today is that there was a seismic cultural impact, largely without the support or gaze of the mainstream entertainment industry - they didn’t depend on investors or artistic validation to create great art. This is a coming together to celebrate the embodiment of Black joy. I am delighted to bring Harlem Now! to the Southbank with Tomorrow’s Warriors.”

Bonnie Greer OBE said “There’s something so poignant about seeing a young woman—specifically, a young Black woman—on stage, singing. For me, it’s incredibly moving. Maybe it’s because I’m an older Black woman myself, and when I see a young Black woman up there, it touches me deeply. It’s powerful. It’s courageous. She was a courageous little thing. Strong, yet fragile at the same time. And she wasn’t afraid to show that fragility. Some people saw it and took advantage of it, but that vulnerability—that softness—is so important, especially for Black girls. But Florence was unforgettable. She was beautiful. She stepped to the front of the line and did her thing with courage. She supported her whole family. And that’s why people remember her. Florence Mills’ story needs to be told—not just as a tribute to her brilliance, but as a mirror held up to a history that continues to repeat itself. She embodies a legacy of young Black women who give everything to their art, only to be consumed by the very systems that celebrate them. From Billie Holiday to Whitney Houston, and so many others—these are artists whose light burned brightly, but often too briefly. Florence’s story is not just history; it’s a living reality for many today. Her life reminds us of the cost of brilliance in a world that too often fails to protect its most luminous souls. And it calls on us to do better—for the artists of today, and for those still to come.”

Harlem Renaissance is the passion project of Dr Gary Crosby OBE, NCO and Tomorrow’s Warriors Founder & Artistic Director, who said “I am so happy to see my vision for Harlem Renaissance brought to Southbank Centre across a weekend with such an incredible lineup. The era taught the world to swing and it’s fitting that modern day audiences should experience it 100 years later. It also gave us hope for a better world. Harlem Renaissance had an indisputable role in abstract and avant-garde art. Alain Locke’s 1925 book The New Negro was influential in using art to subvert the negative narrative of Black culture, allowing Black artists to be valued for their universality. Highlighting Harlem’s contributions to art, through drama, photography, poetry and music. Considering the hardships following the First World War and racial discrimination, Harlem looked like an incredibly exciting and happening place to be - you just knew it was swinging hard. It was also the funnel through which many black artists emerged and a time when black people became politically aware and informed. The era carries a huge legacy and the music and stories will be shared this September, join us!”

Further context about Harlem Renaissance: The Harlem Renaissance saw an explosion of literature, music, visual art, and intellectual thought that defined a new African American identity. Black artists, writers, and musicians were taking control of their own narrative and through a movement that would grow to encompass and celebrate commonality of the cultural heritage of the African diaspora. Whilst the Harlem Renaissance inspired the music of Duke Ellington, the writing of Zora Neale Hurston, and the art of Aaron Douglas, it was never just an American phenomenon—it inspired a global Black consciousness. Writers like Claude McKay (a Jamaican) and thinkers like W.E.B. Du Bois had international influence, connecting Harlem to London, Paris, and beyond. This legacy continues to inspire artists and activists across the UK.

About Duke Ellington and Florence Mills’ connection: Although Ellington and Mills never formally collaborated, their lives were entwined as central figures in the Harlem Renaissance. Florence Mills had a profound influence on Ellington as an artist, as evidenced in Black Beauty, a tribute he composed in 1928, soon after Mills’ untimely death at the age of 31.

The Sound of Islay is Jazz: Islay Jazz Festival announces 2025 dates and new partnership with leading distillery, Caol Ila

Jazz Scotland has announced that Caol Ila, which translates in Gaelic to ‘The Sound of Islay’, will be headline sponsor of the 2025 Islay Jazz Festival, one of Scotland’s biggest celebrations of jazz music.

The Caol Ila Islay Jazz Festival will take place between 19-21 September 2025 and boasts a line-up of jazz musicians from across Scotland, and the world, who will play at intimate venues around the island including Caol Ila and Lagavulin distilleries.

Each year the festival draws jazz and Scotch whisky fans from across the globe who are looking to enjoy the compelling combination of music and whisky, with the stunning backdrop of views of the island’s breathtaking landscape and its symphony of iconic whisky distilleries.

Festival visitors to the island will have the exclusive opportunity to savour a special dram of Caol Ila, crafted specifically to celebrate this annual music and culture event. This limited-edition release will be unveiled soon.

This is the first year that Caol Ila will be headline sponsor of the festival which has been supported by its parent company, Diageo, for 15 years, previously having Lagavulin as the title sponsor. Diageo has confirmed it is extending its longstanding collaboration with Jazz Scotland until 2027.

From 24 July 2025 Festival Pass will be announced and on sale. The Festival Pass will be valid for a full-suite of concerts at a discounted price, priority booking and more, and is the best way to lock in for an immersive festival experience. There will only be 40 limited festival passes available, so be sure to keep an eye on your emails for an announcement of when sales open to avoid disappointment.
Local Islay residents will also be eligible for priority booking and discounts for the festival. Sign-ups for this will also open from 24 July 2025

The 2025 Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival Programme is now at the printers and will soon be available from all participating venues, Birmingham & Sandwell Libraries and the official Festival Information Centre, Snobs Bar.

I know there’s been some speculation about the future of our much-loved Jazz & Blues Festival, so I’d like to assure everyone that this, the 41st year of the festival is absolutely going ahead from July 18th to 27th, with over 160 performances – more than 95% of them completely free to attend – across 103 venues in Sandwell, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Sutton Coldfield and Solihull, with top class musicians from across the UK, France, Italy, USA, New Zealand and Sweden.

This festival is a celebration of live music, community, and resilience – and in challenging times, that spirit shines even brighter.

While it’s true that Birmingham City Council has made the difficult decision to withdraw arts funding for 2024/25, and we have also experienced the loss of support from Westside BID this year, amounting to a combined shortfall of £45,000, our response has been to push forward with renewed purpose – and the support we have received has been nothing short of inspiring.

We are grateful to Sandwell Council and The Musicians’ Union, whose unwavering backing has been essential to our continued success. We’re also pleased to be in promising discussions with the West Midlands Growth Company, who we hope will be supporting the festival for the very first time.

Your support has also been extraordinary. Through our GoFundMe campaign, individuals and fans of the festival have been stepping up to contribute, helping secure our future – whether through small donations or simply by spreading the word.

In 2024, despite the sudden and significant funding cuts – which coincided, ironically, with the festival’s 40th consecutive year – we chose to celebrate louder and larger than ever before. We delivered 239
performances, 230 of them free, in 120 venues to nearly 88,000 people. No other event in this region can match that track record.

While no new institutional funders came forward last year, you did – our loyal and supportive audience. You showed up in full force, proving once again that this festival belongs to the community that supports and loves it.

Thanks to a mix of funding, generous donations, and a personal loan I’ve taken out to safeguard the event, I’m proud to confirm that the 2025 festival is secure and will proceed as planned.

That said, we can’t do this alone. The long-term future of this unique event depends on meaningful investment from cultural, business, and arts organisations. If you or your company can help, we’d love to talk.

Finally, with our limited funding, we’ve had to stretch every resource, and as a result, we are very much behind schedule in our planning – for which we sincerely apologise. We’re working hard, and your understanding means the world to us.

Support The Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival

For every one of the last 40 years, The Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival has been the highlight of this region’s festival attractions, the only event determined enough to present a free live music programme through both of those Covid years.

In 2024, this festivals 40th edition, Birmingham City Council found themselves unable to provide any financial support as they had done for the previous 39 years. Nevertheless, against all the odds we presented 239 performances, 230 of them free admission in 120 venues over 10 days, attracting a total audience of nearly 88,000.

This year the festival faces an even sterner position with our other major funder unable to offer any support. This, combined with the lack of Birmingham City Council funding, has resulted in a total loss of £45,000 for the Festival since 2023.

We are determined to present The 41st Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival from July 18 to 27 this year, but we are forced to face the reality. If we cannot raise sufficient funding to fill the gap, then after this year the City and its residents and visitors, will lose this internationally known and respected festival.

So we have to ask your for your support to help us through these troubled times.

Janette Mason is a jazz pianist, a composer for film and TV, an arranger and producer of all genres from jazz to soul to pop, and a dedicated and heartfelt musical communicator. Over the course of a thirty-year career she has quietly but emphatically made her presence felt, delighting audiences with her skills in all kinds of settings, from tiny jazz clubs to international film and TV projects.

Whether leading her own trio, playing sessions with Oasis, Pulp, or Seal, working with legendary producer Tony Visconti, launching her latest project AYRA in collaboration with vocal legend Juliet Roberts, teaching jazz at Bradfield College or fulfilling her role as Artist in Residence at Twickenham Theatre, Janette always stays true to her core values – a commitment to musical excellence, combined with a generous, giving sensibility that reaches out to audiences and ensures that the message in the music is always there to be heard.

Janette says that her direct influences as a keyboard player were Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea. Eric Ford on drums, has performed across the globe and played on around sixty albums. The Freddie Gavita Quartet in Homage to Freddie Hubbard
Quite a line up to perform music of one of the finest trumpeters in jazz, Freddie Hubbard. He came of age as a soloist in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers from 1961 to 1965. Ten albums for Blue Note and featured on several classic recorded albums with Oliver Nelson, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, to name but a few! Hubbard died in 2008 and deserves to be remembered as being among the jazz greats.
We are therefore delighted to host this gig with wonderful musicians led by 2017 British Jazz Award “Best Trumpeter” Freddie Gavita, who has long been an admirer of Hubbard and will add to our knowledge of his legacy.
Apart from Daniel Casimir, the three other members of the quartet are new to Jazz In Reading. However, there was a livestream quartet performance by Guildford Jazz in Covid afflicted February 2021, a review of which by Trevor Bannister is on our website.
Here is a quote from the review “The spellbinding quality of Freddie’s individual voice was immediately obvious in the opening bars of his own composition ‘Yearning’; understated, flawlessly executed, beautifully articulated and warm in tone. He allows the music space to breathe and to grow in its own way”.  Freddie is a regular member of the house band at Ronnie Scott’s, apart from performing nationwide in various formats.

Tom Cawley (1998 Young Musician of the Year) is a regular in the quartet and a senior member of the UK’s jazz establishment being a composer, arranger, band leader and professor of Jazz piano at the Royal Academy of Music. He has released several acclaimed albums with his “Tom Cawley’s Curios” band.

Daniel Casimir (2021 Instrumentalist Of The Year in the Jazz FM Award) was bassist with Jean Toussaint for a memorable gig at Progress December 2018 – the “Brother Raymond Tour.” Since then, Dan has hit the heights and won awards for his music and playing. Formed his own big band and continues to creatively push the boundaries in jazz.

Finally, drummer and multi-instrumentalist, Mez Clough, has toured and performed with numerous hugely well-known artists from various genres in the music industry. He is also the regular percussionist for Madness.

Chris Biscoe writes:
“Jazz has always been a music about people and places, the connections, the routes (and roots) between, the meetings and the getting away.
When I recorded some of the repertoire from my band Mingus Moves I realised how many of Charles Mingus’ compositions are dedications to musicians, friends and family, lovers and political enemies, not forgetting one toilet-trained cat. The CD was Profiles of Mingus, and this became the working name for the band.
The Profiles Quartet draws on this tradition, expanding it to include compositions by other jazz greats, and something of the travel which is so significant a part of the life of working musicians.Tunes for the quartet include Thelonious Monk’s Jackie-ing (written for his niece Jackie Smith) and Monk’s Dream, Eric Dolphy’s Miss Ann and his portrait of Monk, Hat and Beard. Teenies’ Blues, another family dedication, was written by Oliver Nelson for his little sister. It’s impossible to leave out Charles Mingus, who is represented by Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (for Lester Young), Pussy Cat Dues (that bemused looking cat perched on a Manhattan apartment toilet seat), and Fables of Faubus, the great satirical composition ‘dedicated’ to Orval Faubus, Governor of Arkansas.
Migration and travel appear too, with Billy Strayhorn’s Take The A Train, and Goin’ to Chicago, not the familiar blues but Mike Westbrook’s multi-faceted composition.”
Chris Biscoe came to prominence in the late 1970’s, with Mike Westbrook’s Brass Band. He has toured and recorded extensively in the USA and France, and in the UK. Chris is a founder member of Way Out West, the west London jazz collective which has presented over 800 concerts since 2004. Chris Biscoe crosses musical boundaries in his playing, from ‘cool’ on baritone sax with Allison Neale, post bop with Tony Kofi, contemporary jazz with Liam Noble, through to free and improv jazz with various bands.

Alcyona Mick is a pianist working at the forefront of the London Jazz scene… Recently nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Instrumentalist Award, she is a member of the London Jazz Orchestra and many other UK bands. She has toured and performed worldwide. As a composer she has a Master’s in Composing music for film from the National Film and Television school. She has written and produced music for many independent short films, documentaries, animation and silent cinema. She won an award for Best Soundtrack at the Anima Mundi International Festival, Brazil.

Drummer Winston Clifford is a powerhouse behind the kit for a wide variety of great bands, led by the likes of Gwilym Simcock, Monty Alexander, Stanley Turrentine, Benny Golson and Courtney Pine.
A master of a huge array of drum techniques, Clifford is constantly inventive, immersed in a stream of consciousness yet with ears wide open to hints, suggestions and prompts from his playing partners. He regularly plays around the kit with his bare hands for softer timbres, another card to play in the constant search for dynamic expression and imaginative phrasing.

This evening we’re excited to feature Aaron Liddard as he returns to Norwich with his critically-acclaimed ‘Nylon Man’ project.

Named after the three cities that most influenced Aaron (New York, London and Manchester) the 2022 album - “roughly 12 years in the making” - brought together a cast of 42 musicians from a diversity of genres and styles, including vocalist Carleen Anderson, violinist Omar Puente, trumpeter Yelfris Valdes and saxophonist / guitarist Harry Greene.

Performed this evening by Aaron’s regular sextet of top performers, the newly-expanded set could be said to be genre-defying, but fuses funk, soul, Cuban and Brazilian styles with an over-arching jazz sensibility. Wherever they play, the band’s seductive grooves and feel-good vibe never fail to win over their audience who are soon singing and clapping along.

Jon Crespo is a musician with vast global performance and touring experience. His credits include Lenny Kravitz, The Beach Boys, The Box Tops, KC and the Sunshine Band, The Platters, Michael Ball and Gareth Gates.

Beyond Armstrong is a unique tribute to trumpets players who were inspired by and appeared on the jazz scene after Louis Armstrong. Arguably, one would suggest that modern jazz trumpet playing owes its roots and influences to him. In some way, every trumpet player owes approach, understanding and their sound to Armstrong. This tribute will explore and pay homage to some of those players - including Miles Davis, Tom Harrell, Woody Shaw and more.

About the event

Composer and bass player Ursula Harrison was the winner of the BBC Young Jazz Musician 2024. Alongside playing her own material, she has worked with a variety of large ensembles - recently performing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain, the JM Jazz World Orchestra (in its tour of Italy, Croatia and Montenegro) and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam Jazz Collective with Michael Mayo.

Sylvie Noble is a fast rising voice on the UK jazz vocal scene, performing at venues including Pizza Express Soho and The Vortex. She combines fluent and experimental improvisation with evocative and soulful melodies, pushing the boundaries of the genre. With influences such as Norma Winstone and Carla Bley, her sound is steeped in sensitive honesty and captivating storytelling.

Since meeting on the vibrant South Wales jazz scene, they have frequently performed together and are excited to be recording their debut album this summer.

Known as the “Poet of Havana”, the immensely popular Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela has dedicated his 30-year music career to expressing “the problems of my people.” His poetic lyrics speak to the promise and pain of Cuba across generations, with complex emotion and powerful imagery. His message has been banned and censored by Cuban authorities, but his songs, like 2000’s “Una Palabra,” continue to resonate around the world. As Carlos explains: “Words can transform. They can reach your soul and your heart. They can shake your bones. They can change your life, and that can’t be lost.”

Special guest Diana Fuentes is a Cuban singer-songwriter known for her sparkling voice and her fusion of pop, R&B and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. She began as a vocalist in Síntesis and Carlos Varela’s band, earning Latin GRAMMY® nominations. She was the first Cuban female artist signed to Sony Music Latin since Celia Cruz, earning two Gold Records and one Platinum Record.

This performance is part of the TD Jazz Series and Dodge Poetry, and receives additional support from the Gia Maione Prima Foundation.

EDM beats, jazz improvisation and kick-ass tunes

Zeñel return to Worcester to kick off our Autumn season with a “Replay” series, featuring five select bands that played in the first season of Music Spoken Here at The Marr’s Bar. Zeñel made their first appearance in June 2023 and have since released their third album “Tilde”.

The band are London based trumpeter and producer Laurence Wilkins, Portuguese native Zoe Pascal on drums, and keyboard virtuosos Jay Verma and Alex Wilson sporting a seemingly infinite array of patches. They utilise a unique approach to midi and computer-based sound design to deliver a poetic combination of Jazz improvisation crossed with the world of electronic music, drawing from sounds seldom heard in live band contexts, inspired by cultural heritage of electronic music from the UK and globally.

Note that from the Autumn 2025, our events will start 30 minutes earlier than previously, with doors at 7:30pm for an 8pm start.

Progressive Jazz Rock Legends COLOSSEUM + SOFT MACHINE

Colosseum came to fame in 1969 when the band led by legendary drummer Jon Hiseman released its debut album Those Who Are About To Die Salute You. Best selling studio albums followed, notably Valentyne Suite (1969) and The Daughter of Time is Truth (1970). Changes in personnel saw the arrival of the soulful Chris Farlowe, famed for his Sixties chart hit Out Of Time and Clem Clempson, the young blues guitar virtuoso and vocalist and bass player Mark Clarke. However, the group broke up in 1971 and the musicians went their separate ways.

Named after the William S. Burroughs novel The Soft Machine, the Canterbury-scene legends Soft Machine were formed by Daevid Allen, Kevin Ayers, Mike Ratledge, & Robert Wyatt in 1966. Soft Machine shared the stage with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa and more. A series of incredible albums were released before the band split in 1978.

Other Voices
Other Voices started as a one-off music event in a small church in Dingle, a small fishing village in the west of Ireland and over the last 23 years the idea has grown. Other Voices is now an established fixture in the musical calendar – a ‘must attend’ event for performers and audiences alike. It has led to the creation of an international music TV series and, in turn, a global cultural movement celebrating local stories on an international scale. Other Voices has travelled to London, Belfast, New York, Austin, Texas and Berlin.

Mwldan
Mwldan is an independent Arts Centre and cinema based in Cardigan. The venue presents a multi-artform live programme and screens around 3000 films and live broadcasts annually. A major producing venue, Mwldan is behind international collaborations such as Catrin Finch and Aoife Ní Bhriain. In 2017 Mwldan started the record label bendigedig in partnership with ARC Music Productions Ltd, operating a 360-degree model of artist management, agenting, producing, releasing, PR and marketing. A not-for-profit registered charity and social enterprise, the organisation has an annual turnover of £1.7 million (pre-Covid) and employs a staff team of 25.

Allexa is a saxophonist, flautist and composer from Peru, and has performed with numerous players in the Tomorrow’s Warriors collective, as well as playing the legendary Texan festival South-by-Southest (SXSW) with the all-female group Collectiva. Here in the UK, she has played Ronnie Scott’s, Jazz in the Round, Wilderness Festival and Glastonbury.

Trombonist Christ-Stéphane Boizi studies at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in Greenwich, and as a part of the Tomorrow’s Warriors collective, he has graced venues like Ronnie Scott’s and festivals such as We Out Here with his inventive, electric sound.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers are a key source of inspiration for Boizi, and he blends this with hard bop and Gospel ingredients to form the compositions you’ll hear on the night. It’s a real treat when we’re able to welcome a band this size to the SpArC Theatre. Don’t miss it.

Welsh instrumentalist Gwenifer Raymond, is set to announce her third studio album, to be released September 5th on Canadian label We Are Busy Bodies. Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark is a hybrid of the ancient and the futuristic, where the arcane etchings of occult folk horror fuse with the unfathomable equations of the cosmos. As celestial drones and mutant folk meet a frenetic blues that bends and twists like space-time, on her new album Raymond finds herself evoking the work of pioneering rocket scientists, the words of fictional hobo prophets and the concepts of mathematical infinity.
Raymond, via the circuitous trans-Atlantic journey of her demo – signed to San Francisco’s Tompkins Square Records in 2017, with who she released her first two albums. Her first proper gig was at the Thousand Incarnations of the Rose Festival in Maryland, where she hung with heroes such as Glenn Jones, Marisa Anderson, Daniel Bachman and Peter Walker and was presented by Henry Kaiser with a 1880s Joseph Bohmann guitar which she feels may be possessed by some fingerpicking demon.
The Guardian has described her as a “profound talent” whilst The Observer praised her “awe-inspiring technique and intense musicality”, and Uncut Magazine has championed her “fast-developing talents as a composer of eerie menace.” She has since toured Europe, the US and Canada with the likes of Michael Chapman, Michael Hurley, The Handsome Family, Lankum, Charlie Parr, Richard Dawson, Ryley Walker, and Squid.

An exhibition featuring photographs and quotes from musicians involved in the Birmingham jazz and improvised music scene opens on Friday at the Library of Birmingham. The material is from three collaborative research projects, which brought together jazz scholar Dr Pedro Cravinho & photographer Brian Homer. The combination of photographs and interview quotes provides distinct insights into how active members of the local jazz scene view themselves and the scene, and how they negotiate their lives while developing their professional, musical and other careers.



The launch on Friday, 1:30pm - 4pm includes a short presentation and discussion followed by a duo performance led by Sam Slater. The launch has been arranged so you can follow it up with the 5pm ‘Free Jazz Fridays’ performance by the RBC Jazz and Salsa Orchestra at Symphony Hall and then the Magpie Trio at 8pm at 1000 Trades.

Born and raised in London, British/Iranian guitarist Karim Saber is steadily building a profile as both a performer and composer to watch. These names join the previously announced gigs from world-renowned singer Curtis Stigers, American blues star Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Scotland’s own Colin Steele and corto.alto.

EJBF prides itself on promoting live events all over the city with highlights including award-winning blues artist Stacy Mitchhart in Oxgangs, Luxembourg quartet Saxitude in Murrayfield, and a jazz party at The Pitt Street Food Market.

This year’s international showcases introduce some exciting new names to the festival as we collaborate with partners in Poland and Luxembourg. 

Our Polish Jazz Focus shines the spotlight on compelling mix of voices including visionary pianist Joanna Duda, trailblazing all-women ensemble O.N.E., vocalist Aga Zaryan’s trademark intimacy and nuance and Pawel Kaczmarczyk Trio, an unmissable piano trio. Acclaimed saxophonist Marta Wajdzik joins Alan Benzie in a Polish/Scottish musical meeting. Finally, the stellar Maciej Obara presents a masterclass whilst Piotr Smith talks about the history. This series is part of the 2025 UK/Poland Season organised by the British Council.

Our SPARK programme presents the best in jazz from Luxembourg with a programme curated in association with Kultur | lx – Arts Council Luxembourg. We will welcome a host of new generation of artists who are making waves across the European modern jazz scene. We look forward to introducing Veda Bartinger, Maxime Bender Trio, Michel Meis and Joel Metz (who performs with Scotland’s Brodie Laird-Jarvie) to Edinburgh audiences. 

Scottish artists are the beating heart of our programme, and we feature an array of new and exciting bands, projects and commissions including Nathan Somevi’s Afro-jazz playlist, Emma Smith’s tribute to carers and Paul Harrison pays homage to Keith Jarrett’s legendary Köln Concert. Collaborations include Martin Taylor, who performs with Sweden’s Ulf Wakenius and Mathew Kilner with German drummer Gerwin Eisenhauer. We also give a voice to the new wave of Scottish jazz including Unoma Okudo, TAO and Gaia Jeannot.

As part of a series of interactive events, the festival presents digital music making workshops from Stu Brown, as well as two shows for young music fans with Jazz For Kids and Sound Explorers, both courtesy of Sue McKenzie, as well as talks, masterclasses, jam sessions and more.

The Edinburgh Festival Carnival, Scotland’s largest and most flamboyant multicultural event, returns to the city centre on Sunday 13 July with over 750 participants from across the globe and from the heart of Edinburgh. The Carnival programme will be released on Thursday 12 June.

WEATHER: The show goes on rain or shine.

FOOD AND DRINK: The Club will be hosting a full bar serving beer, wine, champagne & spirits. We’ll also have food available for purchase, details to be announced closer to the event.
However guests are absolutely welcome to bring their own picnics to enjoy, as well as beverages including alcohol.

SEATING: This event takes place on the main lawn of Fulham Palace. Chairs and tables are not provided with your ticket though are available to rent in advance for a small fee (we cannot guarantee availability of tables on the night itself unless they are pre-booked). You may also bring your own blanket or low-backed chair if you wish, but Fulham Palace stipulates that they “not damage the Lawn as it is an area of archaeological significance. Therefore, furniture must not dig into the ground, as this could risk damaging the historic site.”

DISABLED ACCESS: Fulham Palace is quite easy to access; the grounds are level and there is a mix of grass with paved and unpaved paths. For more information, visit the Fulham Palace site.

ANIMALS: With the exception of guide dogs, animals are not permitted at Fulham Palace.

The stellar quartet featuring Ballaké Sissoko (kora), Vincent Segal (cello), Vincent Peirani (accordion) and Émile Parisien (sax), channel a multitude of influences to irresistible effect. They bring their intoxicating live show to London’s Cadogan Hall on 7 October for a special performance.

Malian musical royalty Ballaké Sissoko is a laureate of the Aga Khan Music Awards 2019 and has spent many years making records with French cellist Vincent Segal that bring together Manding and European chamber traditions. Meanwhile, Émile Parisien and Vincent Peirani have worked together as a saxophone and accordion duo somewhere in the hinterlands of jazz and folk. Their collaborative album, Les Egarés (2023), meaning ‘those who have gone astray’, saw the two pairs combine and recombine in the art of cross-fertilising sounds and transcending genres.

Les Egarés reminds us of the rebelliousness that can be found in a spirit of concord and the extent to which the art of playing together with such fine intelligence can generate an extremely subtle way of lighting a fuse. The line up has been announced for this year’s Jazz A Juan. The 64th edition will take place from 10th to 20th July. Herbie Hancock, Jamie Cullum, Dianne Reeves, Gregory Porter and Ibrahim Maalouf are among those scheduled to appear. It will be Herbie Hancock’s 14th appearance at Juan-les-Pins but 13 of the 22 artists or 65 percent of the artists will be making their first appearance at the festival. Among those making their debut in the open air 2800 seat arena will be Robert Plant, and in what is high risk programming for a Jazz festival with a big venue to fill, Emile Londonien, a leading group of French new wave jazz whom I have just enjoyed seeing along the coast in Nice. In another welcome development, For the first time to my knowledge the programme launch included the latest iteration of the Jammin’ Summer Sessions, the free second stage, that hosts emerging groups several of which impressed at last November’s Jammin’ Juan jazz Market place . I am delighted that Obradovic -Tixier duo whose late night performance at an earlier edition of Jammin’ Juan was riveting, are among the line up. Their 2020 album ‘The Boiling Stories of a Smoking Kettle’ received a four- star review in Jazzwise and was an editor’s choice.

The programme for this year’s Nice Jazz Festival has been announced.

This year the Nice Jazz Festival will take place in the centre of the city from 24 to 27 July. The Théâtre de Verdure open air stage which is where nearly all the pure jazz happens will see an increase in the number of acts from three to four a night while the bigger Place Masséna stage mainly will have three urban music and pop-oriented acts a night.

There’s a strong retro, or a looking back to look forwards, thread running through this year’s jazz selection. The hundredth anniversary of Oscar Peterson’s birth will be celebrated by a trio led by pianist Sullivan Fortner, Edouard Pennes will present ‘Bird Lives’, manouche jazz stars Stochelo & Mozes Rosenburg will explore the musical legacy of Charlie Chaplin, leading bassist Christian McBride will lead a trio that will remember the Ray Brown Trio, the veteran jazz masters The Cookers will channel the post-bop of the mid- sixties, and the festival will conclude with a Jazz Celebration of the most essential jazz compositions as voted by listeners to TSF Jazz.

The rest of the programme on the Théâtre de Verdure stage is a mix of established and rising stars. Now entering its 33rd year, the global celebration of music, EFG London Jazz Festival, is announcing the first names for its 2025 edition, which takes place from 14-23 November. For 10 days and nights musicians from all over the world will come together in London to perform boundary-pushing music that showcases jazz and its influence across genres and cultures.

Jazz transcends borders, blending various musical traditions around the world and bringing together diverse communities through the shared language of music. EFG London Jazz Festival has always embraced collaborations between musicians from all over the globe with jazz and its surrounding genres’ openness to diversity, creativity and unity, while continuing to evolve and inspire musicians and audiences worldwide.

Grammy and Tony Award-winning Jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater is bringing her WE EXIST! show to the Barbican on Saturday, 15 November. Bridgewater has had a glittering four-decade career reimagining jazz classics, ascending to the upper echelon of vocalists, uniquely spinning standards and taking intrepid leaps of faith.

When she was just 18 years old, Tanita Tikaram achieved worldwide recognition, selling over 4 million of her debut album, ‘Ancient Heart’, defying previous female music stereotypes, and defining her in the eyes of music history. She returns for the first time in 8 years to make a rare performance at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on Saturday, 15 November.

Following the announcement of their new album Better Dreaming, Tune-Yards, the music project of Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner, are performing at the EFG London Jazz Festival on 22 November at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. Known for their vibrant fusion of indie pop, Afrobeat and experimental loops, Tune-Yards gained widespread acclaim with w h o k i l l in 2011, which featured the breakout hit “Bizness” and won the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics’ poll. Tune-Yards’ music is characterised by layered vocals, polyrhythmic beats, and socially conscious lyrics, tackling themes of race, privilege, and politics.

Over more than 20 years as a recording artist, the jazz piano phenomenon Hiromi has shifted seamlessly from one spellbinding project to the next. In the process, she’s earned a reputation as one of the most explosive live performers in jazz history and a global ambassador for the art form. She performs on Friday, 21 November at the Barbican, which follows her 2023 performance at the same venue for the festival for which The Arts Desk enthused: “as breathtaking for its energy as for its brilliant versatility” in their 5-star review.

A midweek highlight will see the return of Makaya McCraven to the festival following his Sold Out show at the Barbican in 2023, which the Financial Times said was “like being immersed in a recording session in which each song was a master take”. This year, the prodigiously talented drummer and composer takes over KOKO in Camden on Wednesday, 19 November.

At the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on Saturday, 15 November is acclaimed Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, songwriter, and composer, Chris Thile. A multifaceted musical talent, described by The Guardian as “that rare being: an all-round musician,” and hailed by NPR as a “genre-defying musical genius,” Thile is a founding member of the highly influential string bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and has collaborated with countless luminaries from Yo-Yo Ma to Fiona Apple to Brad Mehldau.

The following night at Cadogan Hall, Kurt Elling and The Yellowjackets Celebrate Weather Report. Known for his singular combination of robust swing and poetic insight, the two-time Grammy winner brings his one-of-a-kind brand of contemporary lyricism and vocal ingenuity to jazz. This celebration of Weather Report, one of jazz’s great supergroups, will reimagine the fusion band’s iconic songs in addition to new arrangements inspired by their constellation of musicians.

Closing the first weekend on Sunday, 16 November at Village Underground is American Neo Soul star Bilal, who returns to the spotlight following the success of his two album releases in 2024. His latest, Adjust Brightness, is a giant step forward, as Bilal merges his organic, soulful roots with experimental electronic influences inspired by artists like Aphex Twin and Stereolab. Fans can expect an immersive sonic experience that defies genre conventions, as Bilal continues to evolve and refine his unique style.

Trombonist, singer and composer Rita Payés is one of the standout emerging talents of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band, the nucleus from which some of the most promising young musicians on the jazz scene in Spain have emerged in recent years. She performs at the EFG London Jazz Festival for the first time at Union Chapel on Wednesday, 19 November.

At the Union Chapel on Thursday, 20 November is pianist and composer Fergus McCreadie whose music is a unique blend of jazz and Scottish folk inspired by his country’s sublime landscapes. McCreadie’s music captures the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide, with an appeal that extends far beyond the constraints of genre. Also performing that evening is trumpeter and synthesist Laura Jurd whose unique approach to the trumpet is celebrated in the work that she creates. Laura’s love of folk traditions can often be heard in her music, alongside a background in classical composition, taking twists and turns that both invite surprise and evoke the inevitable.

Following their Sold Out show at last year’s EFG London Jazz Festival, GeeJay return with their strong, soulful and emotionally-charged songs to Islington Assembly Hall on Thursday, 20 November. Expect vintage jazzy chords and groovy rhythms, with saxophone adding a further element to the melodic mix.

The festival will once again launch at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall with Jazz Voice, the glittering opening gala featuring star vocalists reimagining timeless songs for the specially-created EFG London Jazz Festival Orchestra and guest conductor. Taking place on Friday, 14 November, this year’s all-star names will be revealed soon.

After post pandemic touring of Trios, Duos and Solo, John Scofield has configured a new group for the Summer of 2025.

Calling it the Long Days Quartet in honor of the lengthy daylight hours of July, this group is freshly forming to debut Scofield’s recent groove compositions and revisit some classic Scofield material with modern perspectives.

26 years after their initial association (John Scofield’s A GoGo album) keyboardist John Medeski and John Scofield continue their imaginative collaboration together. Over the decades they’ve followed with three more albums and much touring with Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood, Duo work and together in the cooperative project Hudson.

Summer 2025 will unite them with the brilliant and versatile bassist Vicente Archer and a new team member, Seattle based Ted Poor on drums. John played with Ted in the Scary Goldings group and loved it.

Pianists and co-Artistic Directors Katya Apekisheva and Charles Owen reveal another dynamic line-up for the tenth-anniversary edition of the London Piano Festival (LPF) which returns to Kings Place from 9-12 October 2025. Four days of classical and jazz piano performances will include three world premieres by internationally renowned composers, each commissioned especially for this year’s Festival. The programme sees Ronan O’Hora, and Julian Joseph returning to perform at the Festival, and Stephen Hough, Ingrid Fliter, Keelan Carew, Zoe Rahman, Joseph Havlat, Mishka Rushdie Momen and more making their Festival debuts.

Under 30s tickets are available for all concerts at a reduced price of £10. The Festival is delighted to be working with International Piano magazine as its media partner for the tenth year running.

The Festival opens with a joint recital from Katya Apekisheva and Charles Owen, featuring two world premieres. Katya Apekisheva will perform Seasons by Elena Langer, inspired by Philip Larkin’s poetry and commissioned as a companion piece to Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons. Charles Owen performs Stones of the Sky, a new composition by Cheryl Frances-Hoad inspired by gemstones found in the Austrian Alps and the Gem Poems by Pablo Neruda, and conceived as a complimentary piece to Schumann’s Carnaval. The event will be preceded by a pre-concert talk with the composers, led by Ella Lee, presenter of the Classical Circuit podcast [9 October].

Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter makes her LPF debut with a solo recital including Beethoven’s Sonata in E Flat and Sonata in D Major, and Chopin’s Nocturne in B Major and Sonata No. 3 in B minor. Ella Lee will lead a discussion with Charles Owen and Katya Apekisheva beforehand, exploring the artists featured across the rest of the program and reflecting on the Festival’s decade-long legacy [10 October].

On Saturday, the Festival hosts a family concert, featuring a world premiere arrangement of Stravinsky’s The Firebird for two pianos, arranged and performed by James Kreiling and Janneke Brits, alongside Keelan Carew performing Poulenc’s Barbar the Elephant, with celebrated children’s author Michael Morpurgo as narrator. World-renowned pianist Stephen Hough will later present a piano clinic masterclass with pianists from the London conservatoires and beyond, closing with a Q&A led by pianist and broadcaster Keelan Carew [11 October].

The Saturday concludes with the Festival’s central event, the Two-Piano Gala, this year featuring no less than eight performers – Stephen Hough, Ingrid Fliter, Ronan O’Hora, Seta Tanyel, Mishka Rushdie Momen, and Joseph Havlat, in addition to Charles and Katya themselves. This year’s programme will include a world premiere composition by Stephen Hough, King’s Cross March, commissioned by the Festival and performed by Charles Owen and Katya Apekisheva. Joseph Havlat, Charles Owen and Katya Apekisheva will perform the UK premiere of Havlat’s own composition 64 Geese. Stephen Hough also joins Charles Owen and Katya Apekisheva for a rendition of Rachmaninov’s Romance for Six Hands, and Ingrid Fliter, Joseph Havlat, Mishka Rushdie Momen and Ronan O’Hora perform Smetana’s Sonata for Two Pianos, (Eight Hands). Other featured composers include Mozart, Brahms, Shostakovich, Britten, Babajanian, Ravel and more [11 October].

The Sunday begins with a morning recital from Mishka Rushdie Momen, centred around her acclaimed album Reformation, exploring the rich sound world of Renaissance repertoire. This recital will include pieces by Byrd, Gibbons, Bull, Sweenlinck and more, and will conclude with a post-performance Q&A with Ella Lee [12 October].

BBC Russia Editor Steve Rosenberg intersperses stories of his life in Russia with piano improvisations at an event hosted by BBC Radio 3 presenter Petroc Trelawny. Running in parallel with this conversation will be a special focus on the historical and political significance of Dmitri Shostakovich, including a selection of his Preludes and Fugues performed by Berniya Hamie and Jeremy Chan, making their Festival debuts [12 October].

Julian Joseph returns to LPF with Zoe Rahman (in her Festival debut), bringing the 2025 Festival to a close with a recital of outstanding young pianists from the Julian
Joseph Jazz Academy, including Danny Piers, Emile Hinton, Emily Tran and Nnamdi Nnachi Cole, all performing at LPF for the first time [12 October].

The London Piano Festival was founded by pianists Katya Apekisheva and Charles Owen in 2016 and takes place every October at Kings Place, London. Previous visiting artists have included Alfred Brendel, Alexandra Dariescu, Julian Joseph, Gabriela Montero, Stephen Kovacevich, Jason Rebello, Vadym Kholodenko, Leszek Możdżer, Lara Melda, Reinis Zariņš and Kathryn Stott, amongst many others. Walt McClements is an accordionist, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles. His solo compositions focus on processed accordion, creating patient and emotional meditations that nod to drone and ambient music. His debut record, “A Hole in the Fence” was released in 2021 on American Dreams, and utilized a minimal palette of accordions processed through pedals to create glacial soundscapes and odes to hidden worlds. On his latest record, and first for Western Vinyl, “On a Painted Ocean”, he expands his sonic tools to include lush synths, droning pipe organs, and spirited horns, creating a vibrant journey from solitary stillness to community exuberance. The record also follows last year’s “Rain on the Road”, a collaborative album with Harpist Mary Lattimore, who played for SY in Season 1.0.
Prior to releasing music under his own name, McClements had been a touring member of Weyes Blood, Hurray for the Riff Raff, and Dark Dark Dark, as well as leading New Orleans art-punk brass ensemble Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship? and one man band Lonesome Leash.

Support comes from Lucy Sissy Miller, who is a French-British singer-songwriter, composer, and artist based in Paris. On her latest release for Métron Records, Pre Country, she offers her own take on country music—an ambient and airy ode to her love of Americana.In her songs, she uses auto-tune as an instrument, crafting melodic textures and using field recordings as a storytelling tool. Blurring the lines between acoustic and electronic sounds, she seamlessly merges organic and digital elements. Across 16 tracks, Miller reflects on love like friendships, breakups, mermaids, and missing girl mysteries—the album unfolding like a cinematic tribute to girlhood and desire. Pre Country exists in a liminal space, where pop, folk, and ambient dissolve into one another, shapeshifting with every listen—both haunted and luminous.
Lucy has recently had her latest album, Pre Country, published by UK label Métron Records. This is is an airy and ambient ode to Americana blending folk music with electronic and field recording elements.

An all-star celebration of Cal Tjader, the Latin Jazz vibesman who would have been turning 100 years old on Wednesday 16th July 2025.

Callen Radcliffe Tjader Jr. was an American Latin Jazz musician who primarily recorded playing the vibraphone but was also accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timbales and piano.

Cal Tjader started his career alongside Dave Brubeck in the late 1940’s before joining George Shearing’s group in the early 1950’s. In 1954 he formed the Cal Tjader Modern Mambo Quintet.

Expect to hear Cal Tjader classics performed live by some of the UK’s finest Latin Jazz musicians.

Serious are announcing their Summer Jazz Series, in which a handpicked collection of global jazz stars will take to the stage at the Barbican and Cadogan Hall across June and July. This news is led by a very special three night stint from legendary keyboardist and composer Herbie Hancock whose last performance at the Barbican in 2023 was described as “completely engrossing” by The Guardian.

Herbie Hancock returns to the Barbican Hall with a 3-night UK exclusive residency to celebrate his 85th birthday and over 50 years since his first ever London show, at the historic Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park. Herbie Hancock is a true icon of modern music. Throughout his explorations, he has transcended limitations and genres while maintaining his unmistakable voice. With an illustrious career spanning five decades and 14 Grammy Awards, he continues to amaze audiences across the globe.

There are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie Hancock. As the immortal Miles Davis said in his autobiography, “Herbie was the step after Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, and I haven’t heard anybody yet who has come after him.”

Now in the sixth decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: in the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music. Though one can’t track exactly where he will go next, he is sure to leave his inimitable imprint wherever he lands. This exclusive residency is promoted alongside Marshall Arts.

Tigran Hamasyan is considered one of the most remarkable and distinctive pianists and composers of his generation seamlessly fusing potent jazz improvisation and progressive rock with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia. On 16 June, Hamasyan returns to the Barbican Hall to perform a special concert in which he brings his latest album, The Bird of a Thousand Voices to life, live with a quartet. This follows his Sold Out performance at Cadogan Hall as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival last year. Opening for Hamasyan is singer, violinist and composer Alice Zawadzki who has established herself in the peripheries and crossovers of the classical, folk, jazz and art-pop worlds. The award-winning singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer has released three albums of her solo work, the latest her highly lauded Za Górami, released on the iconic ECM Records in 2024.

One of the most lyrical and intimate voices of contemporary jazz piano, Brad Mehldau has forged a unique path, which embodies the essence of jazz exploration, classical romanticism and pop allure. Performing at the Barbican as a trio including Felix Moseholm and Jorge Rossy on 24 June as part of the Summer Jazz Series, Mehldau continues to garner numerous awards and admiration from both jazz purists and music enthusiasts alike. With his self-proclaimed affection for popular music and classical training, “Mehldau is the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times).

Described as “the finest banjo player on the planet” by the Guardian, Béla Fleck’s new all-star trio completed by harpist Edmar Castañeda, and drummer Antonio Sanchez who composed the soundtrack to Oscar winning film Birdman (2014), and received a Grammy award in the same year for the soundtrack. Playing original repertoire, much of it collaboratively written, this trio embarks nightly on fearless explorations that audiences will find irresistible — rich with strong melodies, gorgeous harmony and grooves that twist and turn while feeling fantastic. Catch them at Cadogan Hall on both 9 & 10 July.

Following their successful show at EFG London Jazz Festival last year, which The Telegraph described as “a joyous evening” Take Me to the River All-Stars Memphis Soul Revue is a collection of some of the legendary Memphis musical talents who created countless classic hits that have stood the test of time! Featuring the Queen of Memphis Soul STAX legend and GRAMMY Nominee Carla Thomas who collaborated with R&B star Otis Redding, the legendary Hi Rhythm Section (the band behind 27 Gold and Platinum Records in a row, including all of Al Green’s classics, along with classics from Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, and many others) along with BBKing’s All-Stars vocalist Jerome Chism, GRAMMY winner Boo Mitchell (son of Willie Mitchell) and GRAMMY winner Martin Shore. Taking place the night is guaranteed to keep everyone dancing, shaking, and smiling! As if transported to Memphis itself. Expect to hear the best of Al Green, BB King, Otis Clay, along with classic songs Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes), B-A-B-Y, and the greatest hits from STAX and Hi Records.

The unusual inclusion of a vocalist in Clark’s quintet, next to a horn player, offers another soundscape with which to work.  An exceptional vocalise artist, Emily Masser adds rhythm and words from the heart of Bebop, as well as beautiful lyrics.

A Historic Stage Returns

Empowering Young Talent – The Young Person’s Stage

A key addition to Brecon Jazz Festival 2025 is the Young Person’s Stage at Bishops Meadow, funded by Arts Council Wales. This stage will showcase the next generation of jazz talent, featuring emerging artists and providing a platform for exciting young musicians to develop their craft. Headlining the stage is Ursula Harrison, the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2024, who will not only perform but also assist in curating the line-up.

Beyond the performances, the Young Person’s Stage will serve as a training ground for aspiring industry professionals. Young people will take on roles in sound engineering, lighting, stewarding, photography, and event management, gaining hands-on experience in festival production. This initiative reinforces the festival’s commitment to nurturing future generations of jazz artists and industry professionals.

British Progressive Rock Group CURVED AIR

Curved Air are a pioneering English progressive rock group formed in 1970 by musicians from mixed artistic backgrounds, including classical, folk, and electronic sound. The resulting sound of the band was a mixture of progressive rock, folk rock, and fusion with classical elements.

Along with High Tide and East of Eden, Curved Air were one of the first rock bands after It’s a Beautiful Day, The Flock and The United States of America to feature a violin.

Curved Air released eight studio albums, the first three of which broke the UK Top 20, and had a hit single with Back Street Luv which reached #4 in the UK Singles Chart.
