Sun 1st 1:30pm SUNDAY LUNCH: TRINITY LABAN ELLINGTON REPERTORY BIG BAND FT MUSICAL DIRECTOR MALCOLM EARLE SMITH
This afternoon, under the auspices of Trinity Professor and Musical Director Malcolm Earle Smith – himself a renowned jazz musician, who’s CV includes work with Bryan Ferry, Ronnie Spector, Martha Reeves and John Dankworth – the Trinity Laban Ellington Repertory Big Band has prepared some of the great concert pieces associated with jazz legend Duke Ellington. You’ll hear versions of favourites like “Take the A Train”, “C Jam Blues” and “In a Mellotone”, as well as masterpieces such as “Concerto for Cootie”. This College Big Band has already made a name for itself with the impressive spectacle of such young musicians demonstrating a thorough grasp of the techniques necessary to get to the essence of Ellington’s writing.

Tony O’Malley’s brand of Groove and R&B is stunning, with his fabulous, smoky, velvety growl of a voice delivering original material and some covers in his own inimitable fashion alongside an impressive 4-piece band of some of the finest musicians in the UK, featuring Tim Cansfield (Bee Gees)-guitar. One of the most original and powerful performers on the scene today tonight Tony will be featuring songs from his latest album “Nagenna” alongside his classic material. A truly formidable talent, Nadine Lee is a musical director, composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist whose soulful sound blends gospel, R&B, jazz and roots influences with powerful storytelling. She has distinguished herself across multiple creative spheres encompassing theatre, film and music performance, been nominated for the BBTA Award for Best Musical Director and the Broadway World Award and collaborated with world-renowned artists such as Lizzo, Stormzy & Annie Lennox. Tonight Nadine returns to the 606 with music from her latest EP “HerStory”, a soul-soaked, genre-blending project that celebrates womanhood, resilience, and the power of reclaiming your voice. Expect rich harmonies, tight instrumentation, and heartfelt expression from one of the UK’s most versatile and inspiring artists.

Tue 3rd 8:00pm TOM O’GRADY
Tonight the Tom O’Grady Trio bring their unique take on 60s & 70s Motown/pop classics to the 606. The programme covers classic songs from the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Glen Campbell and many more, inspired by the style of the grooviest piano trios such as Ramsey Lewis & Ahmad Jamal. As well as leading the critically acclaimed jazz funk outfit Resolution 88 and appearing with artists such as Don Blackman, Myles Sanko and Candi Staton, Tom is also an alumnus of jazz funk legends Incognito and co-writes, performs and MDs for his wife, the singer Vanessa Haynes (Incognito). For this début performance at the 606, the trio have augmented their sound with 606 regulars guitarist Al Cherry and harmonica player & percussionist Pat Levett (The Coalminers). The band is completed by bassist Tiago Coimbra and drummer Ric Elsworth. Built on the foundation of world-class songs and an appealing retro vibe this is a terrific gig!

Wed 4th 8:00pm BRYAN CORBETT’s INSTRUMENTAL GROOVE UNIT
An experienced and highly regarded trumpet player the Award-winning Bryan Corbett includes work with the likes of Us3, The Brand New Heavies, Mica Paris and Jocelyn Brown on an impressive cv. A featured soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra he was the recipient of the ‘Jerwood Rising Star’ at Cheltenham International Festival. Tonight Bryan is bringing to the Club his latest project, “Instrumental Groove Unit”, which features his thoughtful, beautifully melodic, flowing trumpet playing and which he describes as “An original project full of hip grooves, beautiful melodies, unique musicianship, interplay and virtuosity, with emphasis on the ‘pocket’ of groove and freedom of improvisation”. Also featuring Luke Harris (The Brand New Heavies)-drums, Paul Deats-kybds & Wayne Matthews-bass this promises to be an exciting but highly musical take on the jazz/groove idiom.

Thu 5th 8:00pm **ALBUM LAUNCH (& BIRTHDAY!)** CLARK TRACEY’S JAZZ CHAMPIONS
Clark Tracey is an excellent, highly experienced, award-winning drummer, bandleader, composer and arranger. Originally featured with the band of his late, great, father Stan, Clark has gone on to establish himself in his own right as one of the country’s leading modern jazz drummers. He has recorded over 90 albums (9 as a leader) and performed in over 50 countries. Awarded the “Best Drums” title five times in the British Jazz Awards and Ronnie Scott’s Award for “Best Drums” in 2007, Clark received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2019 Birthday Honours for services to music and the promotion of jazz. As a bandleader he can boast some of the finest musicians in the UK have passed through his ranks, including the likes of Nigel Hitchcock, Dave O’Higgins, Mark Nightingale, Mornington Lockett and Zoe Rahman. Along with Clark, the quintet gig tonight features a truly impressive group of top class British jazz players, the “Jazz Champions”: saxophonists Art Themen & Simon Allen, pianist Dave Newton & bassist Andrew Cleyndert. But that’s not all - along with the release of the band’s first, self-titled, album at this show Clark is also celebrating his birthday, so promises to be a fun night all round!

A two-time Ivor Novello award-nominated saxophonist and composer now splitting his time between London and New York, Alex Hitchcock’s impact on the jazz scene becomes more impressive with each passing year. Since emerging as leader he’s released four solo albums to critical acclaim, with the Guardian calling him a “virtuoso” while BBC Jazz World hailed him as “leading the charge…of new jazz music being created in the UK.” Tonight Alex is bringing his International Quartet to the Club featuring his Special Guest, the superb Hungarian pianist Krisztián Oláh, widely regarded as one of the finest musicians of his generation. With a raft of Awards to his name, including Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2016, he was the first Hungarian to be invited to the US Thelonious Monk Institute competition. Making up the rest of the quartet will be Michelangelo Scandroglio (Italy)-bass & Ferenc Dániel Szabó (Hungary)-drums. All the members of this highly talented quartet are composers, so their repertoire consists of originals plus some choice standards. An impressive pan-European band featuring four leading artists of the same generation, creating exciting and accessible music for today.

Sun 8th 1:30pm SUNDAY LUNCH: 606 GOSPEL GROUP
Under the auspices of bass player/guitarist Andre Gabriel we present our very own 7-piece gospel ensemble, the “606 Gospel Group”. This is a great group comprising a three-piece band accompanying a four-voice gospel choir. The choir is drawn from a pool of some of the finest gospel singers on the scene and they have been featured as part of the London Jazz Festival as well as on BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service. This is always a fun and uplifting gig and highly recommended. And don’t forget this is our family day so children are more than welcome.

Emma Hatton’s soaring voice and transformative abilities have seen her star in the West End as Elphaba in Wicked, Eva Peron in Evita and Grizabella in Cats. She’s as comfortable singing blues as she is soul, jazz and country, joining the world famous musical collective PostModern Jukebox as a lead vocalist and supporting Jools Holland on his UK tour, opening for him at The Royal Albert Hall. She has released two critically acclaimed EP’s, ‘Merry Christmas, Darling x’ and ‘Thirty Three and a Third’ both of which went straight to Number 1 on the iTunes Jazz and Blues chart. This evening, joined by her quintet, Emma presents ‘Something To Talk About’ a lovingly curated celebration of the music and 50-plus year career of singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt.

Mon 9th 8:00pm JULIAN ARGUELLES - BIRTHDAY GIG
Tonight we welcome the Award-winning world class saxophonist, composer, arranger & educator Julian Arguelles, who has been performing at the Club since the mid 1980’s. A precocious and fearsome talent I recall asking him once whether he was going to “hang out” for a while after sitting in on a gig and he replied “No, I have to get up and go to school tomorrow!”. Since then Julian has gone on to establish himself as one of the UK’s finest modern jazz saxophonists. From the legendary Loose Tubes through his worldwide collaborations with the likes of Dave Holland, John Taylor, Steve Swallow, Larrry Grenadier, Jorge Rossy and Django Bates to his searching solo projects, Julian’s flowing, melodic, pitch perfect playing has been hugely influential to a whole generation of British & European jazz musicians. An exceptionally gifted musician he has been compared to sax legends Wayne Shorter and Charles Lloyd (Jazzwise), his compositions have been described as “supremely lyrical”, his recordings have earned him the highest International accolades and he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire for Services to Jazz (2017) as well as a Parliamentary Jazz Award for his CD “Let it be Told” (2016). As Julian is now living in Austria (he is currently professor of jazz saxophone at the Institute of Jazz, Graz) his trips to the UK to perform are infrequent, so this is a rare chance to hear him in his favourite musical setting. The band this evening is made up of long-time collaborators and unsurprisingly, fellow world class musicians Conor Chaplin-bass, James Maddren-drums & the brilliant, multi-award-winning Gwilym Simcock-piano. The programme will include many of Julian’s great compositions as well as music from his soon-to-be released album “Echo Fields”. We will also be celebrating Julian’s Birthday (slightly late, but worth the wait!), so expect plenty of fun, some guest musicians and of course, truly remarkable music!

American-born saxophonist Dan Reinstein first began playing at the old 606 Club when a medical student in the 1980’s. He returned to the US in the early 90s to become one of the world’s leading laser eye surgeons (he’s now Professor Reinstein). But when he returned to London, it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again and the rest, as they say, is history-Dan & his quartet have performed here for the last 20 years and still going!

A finalist at the Montreux International Guitar competition, David Preston includes work with the likes of Melody Gardot, Curtis Stigers, David Binney, Gary Husband, Empirical & Emma Rawicz on an impressive cv. He released his debut albums ‘Purple/Black’ vols. 1 & 2 to significant acclaim (“Editor’s Choice” Jazzwise) and as composer has written commissions for the likes of the Royal Opera House, Rambert & Danza Contemporanea de Cuba. A Purcell School of Music scholar Benet McLean was destined to be a concert violinist. However, by his early 20’s he had transferred to jazz piano, playing with the likes of Omar, Cleveland Watkiss, Roachford and Loose Tubes. But, after performing as a highly regarded pianist for over ten years, Benet once again returned to his first love, the violin, only this time as a swinging and immensely creative jazz musician. This evening Benet, with his quintet, will be playing tunes featured on his latest album “Green Park” as well as some brand-new material written for the gig & choice jazz standards. Also featuring Pat Clahar (Bill Bruford, Incognito)-sax.

Wayne Hernandez is one of those fantastic singers who has been using his considerable talents to make others sound good. He includes work with Tina Turner, Madonna, Kool and the Gang and Gorillaz and more recently the Kingdom Choir, who took the world by storm performing at the wedding of Harry and Meghan. He describes his music as “…a living fusion of music styles from the Black music scene”. A brilliant set of powerful groove music from an impressive band of hand-picked musicians that defines the word “soul”. And expect to hear some sultry soul classics alongside Wayne’s Groove favourites in keeping with the Valentine’s vibe!

Branded a “Canadian jazz legend” by BBC Radio 3, Sandra-Mae Lux makes a triumphant return to the 606 after the release here of her latest album ‘Seasons in Jazz.’ An award-winning songwriter, vocalist and excellent saxophonist Sandra was widely regarded as one of the most talented musicians of her generation in her native Canada. On moving to London she made her mark with her debut album “Happily Ever Now” (2020) which explored jazz, funk, and soul grooves however, in the last couple of years, she has gone back to her jazz roots, concentrating on her songwriting as well as performing, creating an outstanding album of brand-new, contemporary, American Songbook style material with “Seasons in Jazz”. Packed full of swinging numbers, atmospheric ballads and everything in between, the gig tonight will be a delightful mix of jazz standards old and new, ideal for this romantic occasion. Canadian-born but London-based, jazz vocalist Lauren Bush returns to the Club with her outstanding band following a highly successful Canadian tour. Known for her impeccable phrasing, fluid scatting and fresh approach to the jazz tradition, Lauren has been praised internationally for both her recordings and her captivating live performances. Today she will be joined by Liam Dunachie-piano, Dave Manington-bass & Dave Ingamells-drums for an afternoon of reimagined standards and original music. Expect songs drawn from all three of Lauren’s acclaimed albums, including her latest release “Tide Rises”, delivered with warmth and swing.

Polly Gibbons is a consummate performer, as much at home singing tender jazz ballads as she is performing rockin’ R&B classics. Nominated Vocalist of the Year by Jazz FM, she is now well established in the US with three albums on American label Resonance Records. In 2022 Polly fulfilled her ambition to record an album of original songs, “As It Is”, written, arranged and produced by her and co-produced by musical collaborator and artistic director at Ronnie Scott’s, James Pearson. And watch out for Polly’s Special Guest making her 606 debut, the gifted singer-songwriter Grace Mann who will perform songs from her upcoming EP.

Join us to celebrate the great Soul and Funk songs with “Thunderthumbs”, the 10-piece band inspired by the great US bass player Louis Johnson led by bassist Phil Mulford. The set runs from Louis’ time with Billy Preston through to his own band The Brothers Johnson and the Quincy Jones hits on which he played. Alcyona Mick is a London-based pianist and composer works regularly with a wide array of artists and bands, including the London Jazz Orchestra, Brigitte Beraha, Randolph Matthews, Yazz Ahmed, Ingrid & Christine Jensen & Jerry Dammers. A Parliamentary Jazz award nominee, she has performed worldwide for many years with Anglo-Egyptian vocalist Natacha Atlas as well as two seasons of a music TV series for TRT in Istanbul with vocalist Mircan Kaya. A talented composer she has written music for documentary, short film and TV and won an award for best soundtrack at the Anima Mundi festival, Brazil. Tonight, top UK trombonist and arranger Patrick Hayes brings his sextet to the Club, paying tribute to 1970s jazz-funk pioneers “The Crusaders”. Patrick has performed, recorded or arranged for an impressive range of artists, from Chaka Khan to Christina Aguilera, Snarky Puppy and Christian McBride and is probably best known at the club as the trombonist & horn arranger for 606 favourite Hamish Stuart’s 10-piece band. The music features an amazing lineup including Jonny Griffiths (Stanley Clarke)-sax, Adam Phillips (Tina Turner)-guitar, Mo Pleasure (Earth, Wind & Fire)-piano and Neal Wilkinson (Sir Paul McCartney)-drums, covering all eras of the iconic “Crusaders” history from the early 1970’s to the chart topping “Street Life” years of the 1980s. Led by the winner of the 2017 Dankworth Prize for Jazz, saxophonist Matt Anderson, Wild Flower Quintet celebrates Wayne Shorter’s classic recordings for Blue Note Records (1964 – 1970). Described by Jazzwise as putting “their own unique stamp on Shorter’s very personal repertoire…of a quality that resonates with its inspirational source” the band features highly regarded trumpeter Quentin Collins (Kyle Eastwood, Omar). The group play original music inspired by Shorter’s sound and approach, alongside new arrangements of both his classic and lesser-known compositions.

Tonight we present an evening celebrating the joyous, rhythmic, delights of classic Brazilian MPB with the 606 Club’s outstanding Brazilian band “Samara”. Featuring the brilliant Brazilian vocalist Carolina Lelis alongside the powerful piano of John Crawford and the swinging flute of our “Gov’nor” Steve Rubie the band take you on a road trip around Brazil, with music from the South, the North, the North East and beyond. Hear the stories behind some of Brazil’s classic songs and join the band as they perform an infectious blend of Brazilian Samba, Baião, jazz & Latin while everyone has a great time!

Highly regarded saxophonist Dave O’Higgins has worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and Nancy Wilson. He has 24 albums as leader to his credit and two British Jazz Award nominations for Best Album and ‘Best Tenor Saxophonist’. An in-demand producer he most recently produced Matt Bianco’s album ‘Gravity’. Tonight, along with Special Guest Sean Fyfe on piano, Dave will be bringing his latest project “Monkin’ Around” to the Club which, as Dave describes it, will be “playing the timeless themes of Thelonious Monk - swinging, grooving, lyrical and playful”.

Jazz vocalist/songwriter Sarah Jane Eveleigh is respected for her passionate delivery and engaging interpretations of jazz standards. A gifted storyteller who brings a level of style, accuracy and class to her performances, she is building a strong reputation as a sought-after vocalist. Today Sarah will be showcasing some of her favourite standards alongside some of her own excellent compositions.

Mary Pearce is the “Queen” of studio and backing vocals. You may not know her name, but you will certainly have heard her powerful, soulful vocals with the likes of Lionel Ritchie, Chaka Khan, Courtney Pine and Beverley Knight. As well as more than 20 years as a studio singer Mary has also featured as lead vocalist on a number of “Groove” and Dance hits and more recently toured with pop icon Boy George as an integral part of his (excellent) band. Really impressive Groove gig, this.

Keyboardist Jonny Liebeck has performed at the likes of the Purcell Room & Royal Albert Hall as well as playing alongside Cuban Jazz legend Omar Puente & Soul legend Mica Paris. Jonny’s latest EP “Influences” mixes 20th century-influenced jazz & fusion with electronic dance music to create a contemporary, swinging sound. Joining him on the stand are four outstanding musicians including rising star Donovan Haffner-sax. An iconic figure, guitarist John Etheridge first came to prominence in the mid 70’s with the classic fusion band “Soft Machine” while also touring with the celebrated swing jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli. A master guitarist he includes work with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Williams, Yehudi Menuhin, Pat Metheny and John Williams on a hugely impressive CV, and has just recently been awarded the highly prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Musicians’ Company. Tonight John leads his wonderful “Blue Spirits” Organ trio, featuring Pete Whittaker-organ & Jamie Murray-drums.

Trumpeter/composer/educator Byron Wallen’s creative mind and constant quest for discovery have seen him work with the likes of George Benson & Chaka Khan in countries as varied as Morocco, Nigeria, Indonesia & South Africa. His music has been commissioned by a plethora of highly regarded organisations, culminating in his receiving the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Award for Artists in 2017. Following his acclaimed performances dedicated to the brilliant US jazz pianist and composer Andrew Hill, whose quintet Byron played in until Hill’s death in 2007, Byron now leads this project into thrilling new territory. Retaining the exploratory essence of Hill’s visionary work the band now channel this through vibrant original compositions, utilising Hill’s harmonic and rhythmic freedom to forge a compelling contemporary sound. Joined by a stellar lineup of: Danny Piers-piano, Kobe Heath Ngugi-bass & Sacha Harlan-drums, together they create music that is both a tribute to a master and at the same time a bold statement of its own identity. As Byron says, “It’s the sound of a legacy being lived and evolved, not merely revisited”.
