Charles McPherson – alto saxophone
Yotam Silberstein – guitar
Bruce Barth– piano

“No jazz musician of the past 60 years has more palpably channelled the sound of Charlie Parker than alto saxophonist Charles McPherson.” – Jazziz
Alto saxophonist and bebop legend Charles McPherson leads a hard-swinging quintet with guitarist Yotam Silberstein, pianist Bruce Barth, bassist David Wong, and drummer Lewis Nash. One of the most acclaimed and beloved voices in jazz, McPherson’s rich musical style is rooted in the blues and bebop and has influenced and inspired generations of musicians and listeners for over six decades. He has performed at concerts and festivals around the world with jazz greats like Barry Harris, Billy Eckstine, Nat Adderley, Jay McShann, Phil Woods, Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, and others.
In a recent review, Downbeat states, “As a still-vibrant jazz veteran with ties to innovators like Charles Mingus and Lionel Hampton, McPherson’s writing carries on the traditional weight of bebop and swing, buoyed with an inventive, contemporary spark.” Paris Move writes of his recent acclaimed album, Reverence (SMOKE Sessions Records), “If you love jazz, this album is already a legend.”
Wed-Sun Nov 12-16 JOEY ALEXANDER & FRIENDS SMOKE debut
Joey Alexander – piano
Daniel Winshall – bass
Tyson Jackson – drums (wed & thu)

Pianist Joey Alexander makes a highly anticipated SMOKE debut leading his group featuring bassist Daniel Winshall and drummers Tyson Jackson (Wed & Thu) and Willie Jones III (Fri, Sat & Sun). Originally from Indonesia, Alexander was a heralded prodigy who has become, as a young adult, one of the most highly regarded pianists in jazz and one of its most important worldwide ambassadors. His albums have earned multiple Grammy nominations and secured the No. 1 spot on the Billboard jazz chart.
Over the course of his astonishing career, Alexander has performed with Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding at the Obama White House, for President Bill Clinton at the Arthur Ashe Learning Center Gala, at the Grand Ole Opry, the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, and at major jazz festivals and nightclubs around the world with top collaborators like Larry Grenadier, Kendrick Scott, Chris Potter and many others. He has also been the subject of profiles on CBS-TV “60 Minutes” and in The New York Times. JazzTimes wrote that “he evinces a deftness of touch, wit, and most important, emotional depth that would seem well beyond his years.”
Wed-Sun Nov 19-22 BILL CHARLAP SOLO PIANO
Bill Charlap – Steinway Concert D piano
“No matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” – Time
GRAMMY award-winning pianist Bill Charlap performs a week of very special solo shows on a visiting nine-foot Steinway D Concert Grand. Charlap, one of the leading artists of our time who has performed with everyone from Wynton Marsalis and Tony Bennett to Phil Woods and Ron Carter, is also, on very special occasions, an acclaimed solo performer. DownBeatexplains that “his solo piano outings in the city are rare” and “a true event” and that he applies “his expansive outlook and encyclopedic knowledge to the demands of the solo format with as much rigor as he does to his other endeavors.” Don’t miss this special opportunity to hear Charlap in an intimate solo piano setting.
Fri-Sun Nov 28-30 BILLY HART QUARTET MULTIDIRECTIONAL album release
