An opportunity for young people

Is this an opportunity for a young person that you know?

Bath Jazz Weekend and All Of The Above (AOTA) are trialling a new project aimed at encouraging young people to become the next generation of music promoters (to replace old geezers like me when I am too old to hold a microphone any more!)

We are offering 4 places for young people to come and enjoy the full Bath Jazz Weekend for free – and to volunteer to help with the event a little each day. They’ll get meals provided by us.  They will also have the opportunity to connect with the people on our (very experienced) crew doing the various jobs – PA, stage, management, artist liaison, lighting, box office and (me) programming/marketing etc.

If those people are interested in the idea of promoting gigs (not necessarily jazz, but music of any kind of their choice) they can join me and the crew members in February & March 2026 in 2 workshop days where we will explore with them the details and practical realities of all of the areas of promoting – from programming, marketing and important financial aspects to the technicalities of sound, lights, staging etc.

Then there are two more opportunities:  to work with me and the crew on the next AOTA gig on Saturday 28 February and to plan and present their own first gig(s), with help and advisory support from me, including help to apply for funding to underwrite the risk of one or more gigs.

The venue for all this of course is Widcombe Social Club, Bath, where the Jazz Weekend and AOTA gigs are held.  The venue will also host the workshops and offer the venue for a first new gig that these people might promote there.

Can I ask you to put this out to anyone you know (over the age of 18) who might be interested – and get people to reply to me by email at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) ?  Also – I’ve put this call out music interests at Bath College, Bath and Bath Spa Universities.

The 4 free places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, depending on availability and on a few simple questions from me to assess their level of interest.

Thanks for reading and hope to see you soon.
