Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba announce UK tour in 2023
Mwldan and Jazzhaus Artists are delighted to announce a major UK tour for Mali’s Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba in May and June 2023.
The tour will visit twelve venues across Wales and England, starting at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on May 30th, then on to The Stables, Milton Keynes (May 31st); Howard Assembly Room, Leeds (June 1st); Neuadd Ogwen, Bethesda (June 2nd); Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room (June 3rd); Band On The Wall, Manchester (June 4th); Warwick Arts Centre Coventry (June 5th); Lakeside Arts Nottingham (June 6th); Taliesin Arts Centre, Swansea (June 7th); St Georges Bristol (June 8th); The Apex, Bury St Edmunds (June 9th), finishing at London’s Union Chapel on June 10th.
Bassekou Kouyate is one of the true masters of the ngoni, an ancient traditional lute found throughout West Africa, and is respected as one of Africa’s premier global artists. His band, Ngoni Ba, includes ngoni players (featuring ngonis with differing tonal sizes), percussionists (talking drum, Yabara, Calebasse) and the fantastic singer Amy Sacko.
Together they have revolutionised the sound of the ngoni and radically fired centuries of griot tradition into the future, and his success of the last decade has had a tremendous impact on today’s Malian music leading to a ngoni revival back home in Mali and encouraging a new respect in the younger generations for this ancient instrument. Recognised as both an innovator and a stronghold of traditional Malian music, Bassekou has collaborated with the likes of Ali Farka Toure, Toumani Diabate, Taj Mahal, and The Kronos Quartet and has performed alongside Damon Albarn and Paul Weller as part of the Africa Express tour. He has performed at major festivals worldwide, including Glastonbury, Roskilde, Fuji Rock Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and WOMAD. Bassekou’s recent album “Miri” (‘dream’ in Bamana) topped the World Music Charts Europe in February 2019 and was voted “Best Album of the Year” by Songlines magazine.
Expect incredible dexterity and stunning music from one of Africa’s music visionaries. Tickets are available directly from the tour venue websites. Visit http://www.bassekou.com for details.
