Brecon Jazz Club and Festival and Hot Club, Cardiff - audio files to enjoy listening to while self isolating from Covid-19.

Monday, March 23, 2020

As part of their latest e-mail out to Brecon Jazz Club members Lynne Gornall & Roger Cannon have provided audio links to previous Club and Festival performances. Details attached.

Lynne and Roger are happy for these files to be shared with the wider jazz public. The bulk of the latest Brecon Jazz Club email appears below;

Hello Everyone

Our lovely social gatherings and enjoyment of jazz music together, often following meals provided by cafes and restaurants around the town, have been life-affirming for all of us, and over the many years that we have been running.

We thank you and the team, venue, food providers, for all this support.

Because of current circumstances, we are suspending these monthly jazz gatherings: musicians should not travel or get together to rehearse, our venue must close, members need to stay away.

It feels like a period of social austerity - but things will return in time, and music and the arts will be some of the most important things in our well-being.

Of course, whilst we all like and enjoy live music, the documentation of jazz and other genres through recordings, is also one of the wonders of our world.

So please take time to ‘listen again’: to some of last year’s Brecon Jazz Festival concerts, with sound files created by Rhys Phillips. For info, we also have an ongoing project in collaboration with Brecon Volunteer Bureau, to edit and produce many more of our Jazz video recordings for public access. Let’s start with an audio of Samantha Wright Quintet (two clarinets, piano, bass, drums) at BJ Festival, Friday 9th August 2019 (at the Muse); then we are giving you the whole works: full sets (Guildhall concerts-hi quality), single tracks (lower res recordings but fab music) Gareth Roberts’ ‘Ellington’ Quartet, Sat 10th August (Wellington Hotel), Ross Stanley (Muse), Ocaso (Castle Hotel), Gethin Liddington (Wellington) Sunday lunchtime 11th August…What times we’ve had!
Full sets / single tracks / ‘Birdland’ compilation, best of BJF2019 : you can also download these, thanks to Rhys’ dedicated support and work.

Another amazing friend, Paul Dunleavy, has recorded and produced many Cafe Jazz live music events in Cardiff, over several years, including most of our monthly ‘Hot Club’ sessions too. You will see and hear many of the artists who have come to play for us in Brecon, sometimes in different combinations or lineups. The splendid Victoria Klewin did a set for us at Cafe Jazz with musicians Adam Stokes & Ashley Long, and this fresh memory of a lovely jazz voice and trio is the latest (and last, for now) in Paul’s collection: just checked the link and it really cheered us up - Cheek to Cheek, what a great number, see those musicians at work and loving what they do! Enjoy:-

Our best wishes to all, keep well and in touch. Till we have more live music, please enjoy the pleasures of concerts we have been proud and privileged to stage and hear only last year…we will be sending more links out in due course. Thanks to the musicians and sound people for these treasures.
