JBGB Events return to the jazz cabaret venue, Piano Smithfield, with concerts showcasing young talented musicians building their careers, along with established UK jazz greats in this vocal series.

Thursday February 3rd Nel Begley – from Brazil to Broadway

The delightful, talented Nel Begley is the first singer in the JBGB Jazz Singers 2022 series at Piano Smithfield.
Fusing her love of Bossa Nova and Latin stylings to the swinging sounds of Broadway and the American Songbook - Nel and her band will be performing hits such as “Girl From Ipamema”, “Chega De Saudade (No More Blues) and “Comes Love”
Nel is an experienced singer and performer. She graduated with a First from Leeds College of Music where she studied Jazz under the tutelage of Lauren Kinsella.
She has performed with numerous projects covering a wide range of styles and genres including jazz, close harmony, pop, musical theatre and vocal improvisation. She is currently performing with her originals project ‘Rafe’s Dilemma’ and the London vocal project. She also composes and performs her own material.
Accompanying Nel is the accomplished pianist Rob Barron, returning to Piano Smithfield after his recent debut concert with James Hudson performing the music of Nat King Cole and Guildhall alumni Joe Lee on double bass.

Liane Carroll returns to Piano Smithfield in our JBGB Jazz Singers 2022 Series
Liane is one of the UK’s greatest singer/pianists, who with her infectious personality brings Entertainment with a capital “E” to her much requested return for this concert at Piano Smithfield, following her sensational sold- out concert in our Jazz Cabaret launch series in Autumn 2021
“One of the most stylistically flexible pianists around, with a marvellous, slightly husky singing voice” (The Observer).
“A powerful, soul-inflected performer with an Ella Fitzgerald-like improv athleticism and an emotional frankness on ballads” (The Guardian)
Liane’s first four albums all enjoyed four-starred reviews, and “Ballads” received ***** from Jazz Journal. “Seaside”, won CD of the year at the 2015 British Jazz awards.
A winner of the British Jazz and Parliamentary Jazz Awards she received the 2016 Gold award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.
She is a regular performer in the great jazz music venues, including not only staring in our Jazz Divas series, but also opening the 2021 series in September at The Pheasantry on the King’s Road; with Claire Martin in their Two’s Company concert at St John’s Smith Square in the EFG London Jazz Festivals; sold-out performances at The Crazy Coqs and in summer festival performances across the country.

 

Thursday February 10th Eliana Veinberga – Mellow Jazz Sounds

Eliana Veinberga presents an intimate concert showcasing the mellow side of her favourite jazz and soul artists.
Featuring the music of artists such as Norah Jones, Melody Gardot, Stevie Wonder and Chet Baker - expect fresh arrangements of classics such as “Nearness of You” and “Don’t Know Why”. A perfect concert for a pre-valentines treat.
Eliana is a London based jazz singer songwriter whose voice has been compared with that of Melody Gardot and Gretchen Parlato. 
Originally from Latvia, Eliana moved to the UK to study at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she became a member of the Jazz Singers, Guildhall Big Band and the award winning a cappella group The Conchords.
Now, in her final year, Eliana is quickly making a name for herself in the London music scene and is performing with ensembles such as the
National Youth Jazz Orchestra, London Vocal Project, Garcia Coombs Quartet, Ralph Porret Quintet and Hudson Collective.
Eliana can be seen performing at venues such as Pizza Express Jazz Club Dean Street, the Barbican, The Vortex and many more and in the EFG London Jazz Festival. 
Eliana’s band includes top arranger- producer and in demand guitarist Nick Fitch, with the innovative Joe Hill - Piano and Jack Tustin - Double Bass

 

Thursday February 17th Scarlet Halton – Speak Love

Scarlet Halton arrives at Piano Smithfield to celebrate the music of the Queen of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald. For this concert Scarlet will be focussing on Ella’s iconic duo records with virtuoso guitarist Joe Pass.
And in that role she will be accompanied on guitar by maestro Nick Fitch, no stranger to Piano Smithfield and shortly to feature in our forthcoming Two-Guitars Festival in March.
Expect smoky sultry ballads such as “At Last” and “Georgia On My Mind” and upbeat Broadway classics like Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale” – originally banned from the airwaves because of its provocative lyrics, but now recognised as a great jazz classic.
Having grown up in a musical family, Scarlet is pursuing a career in music. Currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music, she has a focus not only on performing, where her wide vocal range gives her singing a strong personality, but also building a reputation as a creative and imaginative composer.

Concluding our JBGB Jazz Singers 2022 series it’s a welcome, for her debut PianoSmithfield performance, to Francesca Confortini
Combining her love of the great American songbook with the Gypsy jazz tradition and the repertoire they share, Francesca performs an upbeat, swinging set of jazz standards made famous by artists such as Nat King Cole and Django Reinhardt.
From “How High the Moon” to “It Had To Be You” audiences can expect a joyful and swinging set by Francesca and her band.
Born in Milan, Francesca has been living and working in London for many years. She has a degree in Popular Music Performance and has been studying for a Masters in Jazz Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Singing, performing and playing the piano, she observes that “music plays a huge role in my life”. 
Her sound is versatile, with a soft, soulful- tone spanning a wide range. Her performances embrace musical theatre, jazz improvisation, agility-based pop, gypsy-rock sounds and even gospel,
She has already performed in some of Europe’s most significant stages, including Ronnie Scott’s in London; the Blue Note in Milan and the Grand Hotel de Paris in Monaco.
Francesca will be accompanied by the widely recognised ace guitarist Colin Oxley with Tom Farmer on bass.
