BEJE (British European Jazz Ensemble) Trio with Yunmi Kang / Sangyeon Park - UK Tour February 2026.
Saturday, January 17, 2026
Three members of BEJE together with the Korean musicians Yunmi Kang and Sangyeon Park will undertake a short UK tour in February 2026. Details attached.
David Mowat of the British European Jazz Ensemble writes;
How can intensely felt engagement with social justice issues, compassion for fellows far away join together in me, in the one cosmic ‘Om’ that streams as music? My activism and human concerns feel often that they get in the way of composing and playing. Music can feel far away on another plain. Art and politics do not mix I have been told. I spend my days fielding requests for tents and food in Gaza, then am off to a cold church hall to unwind and practice trumpet. By the rivers of Babylon I sit and weep.
All these strands are a part of who I am. And life’s journey is an art of integration. The stage is a moment for releasing the fruit of that journey, that yearning, frustration, indignation, tears and joys and glimpses of beauty to fellow humans across the artifice that divides audience from performer. We are in the ‘Om’ together.
All this, by way of introducing a UK tour, a rare collaboration between Korean jazz musicians, an Italian drummer, a British bassist and a half Swiss trumpeter. We create music out of social engagement and reflections on the world. I suppose all musicians do to some extent.
It has been a joy to perform with Paolo, Yunmi, Sangyeon (and Al in other ensembles who joins us now) as we share similar sensitivities around people, animals (you should hear us talk about cats) and the world. We’re unconstrained by notions of what jazz is but like to pulse with Paolo’s push, to swing, prog-rock out, to ride ride cymbal sounds. And crystal cool though he is Sangyeon plays and feels the blues, ‘Haan’ in Korea, in his guitar. Yunmi’s solid classical-trained piano playing is a foil for her irresistible voice cutting like a knife through our mental defences straight into the soul. The bass? My trumpet? You’ll have to find out.
Catch us in Cardiff, Bristol, Bath, London or Lyme Regis.
