Vanessa Hayes presents Aretha Franklin
Date: Saturday 23 August 2025
Vanessa Haynes presents the songs of the undisputed “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin, who sold over 75 million records and won 18 Grammys, in a career spanning six decades. Described by The Guardian as “remarkable” Vanessa Hayes is a pianist and vocal powerhouse whose voice was characterised by UK Soul as “combining the sting of Chaka Khan with the resonance of Aretha”.
Vanessa and her stellar band will be covering Aretha Franklin’s greatest hits (including Franklin’s signature song R.E.S.P.E.C.T, which reached number one in both the UK’s R&B and pop charts) plus lesser-known gems, all guaranteed to leave your jaw dropping and your heart pumping.

‘The Space Between The Notes’: A Jazz Photography Exhibition
Date: Monday 25 August – Monday 6 October 2025
This joint event with the Guildford Festival of Arts is an exhibition of Jazz Photographs at the Art and Grind Café, 165 Guildford High Street. It features works by John Lyons, Winner of the 2022 Abbey Road Studios award for Live Music Photography plus works by Pete Johnson and local photographers.
Entry is FREE and coffee, tea and wonderful cakes can also be purchased. All displayed photographs are available for sale. Please enquire at the cafe desk for details.

Big Swing Showcase

Celebrate Guildford Heritage Open Day with an afternoon of Big Band music on the Guildford Castle Bandstand showcasing two great local bands – ‘Junction 4’ and ‘Rhythm & Groove’. Based on the Hampshire/Surrey border, Junction 4 are a dynamic 18-piece ensemble, brimming with energy and style and performing everything from 1930s swing to modern chart hits including Basie, Caro Emerald, Nirvana and Pharell Williams. Godalming-based Rhythm and Groove are an 18-piece outfit with a wide repertoire ranging from the swing of Benny Goodman to the modern arrangements of Gordon Goodwin, with some Buddy Rich thrown in for those who like high energy tunes. The band is composed mainly of music graduates and professionals, who enjoy making fantastic music together, and sharing their enthusiasm for the music in live performance.

Matt Skelton’s Blackhawk Quintet

The Blackhawk Quintet present an evening of cool jazz in tribute to the legendary drummer Shelley Manne, one of the greats of the 1950s West Coast jazz scene. The centrepiece of the music is inspired by a clutch of golden quintet performances captured live at The Black Hawk Jazz Club in San Francisco between 22 and 24 September 1959. The stellar line-up comprises Jim Davison (trumpet), Mark Crooks (tenor sax), Leon Greening (piano), Conor Chaplin (double bass), and Matt Skelton (drums & leader).

New Orleans Jazz with The Alvar Tree Frogs

A rare opportunity to step inside Abbott’s Hospital with live jazz in the Courtyard from The Alvar Tree Frogs. The band were formed on Alver Street, New Orleans where one night, tired and happy, its founder members listened to the tree frogs singing their song and decided to form a band that would breathe life into music long forgotten, music that made the streets of New Orleans a place to dance and party in the 20s, 30s and 40s, music that is so hip you’ll want to hop around and dance to it.
Entry is FREE and you’re welcome to call in at any time during the band’s performance.

Janette Mason Trio

With Janette’s fierce and inventive arrangements pulling everything together, the original tunes’ irresistible melodic personalities are daringly expanded and reconfigured by the trio so that they delight the listener anew with the depth and sophistication of jazz while retaining the direct appeal of pop.

For their closing event of the 2025 Guildford Jazz and Soul Festival, Guildford Jazz proudly presents Mark Kavuma’s Banger Factory Sextet playing their new album ‘Magnum Opus’.
Magnum Opus presents original compositions, arrangements and performances by veterans of the British jazz scene and is a celebration of music, leadership and community. Released last Autumn, the album was launched at a sold-out Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre) for the London Jazz Festival. Charismatic and
visionary trumpet player and composer Mark Kavuma. Kavuma is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of jazz whilst inspiring the next generation, showcasing the immense talent of London’s jazz community, championing diversity across genres, genders and borders, and ultimately shaping the future of jazz music.
