Jez Matthews has forwarded details of the forthcoming regular jazz events at The Lescar Hotel, Sheffield during November and December 2025 and January 2026.
Jez Matthews writes;
A quick update about who we’ve got coming up at The Lescar in November and December. We’re super-excited about these, in particular this time there’s a real mix of international artists and musicians with strong connections to Sheffield.
Our last gig this year is the Sloth Racket 10th Anniversary gig on 17th December, but we’ve got some really amazing gigs coming up in early 2026 too.
We’ve had a brilliant year, with a lot of sell-out gigs, wonderful audiences, and of course the music has been fantastic.
5th Nov / ARCHE
A dynamic international trio bringing together guitarist Steve Saunders (Xhosa Cole, Paul Dunmall) with Berlin-based saxophonist Asger Nissen and legendary New York jazz drummer Jeff Williams. Thoughtful, intense exploratory music and original compositions bringing together influences from the classical world including Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, Morton Feldman and Milton Babbitt, whilst drawing on jazz and improvised music and the open expansive music of Paul Motian. ARCHE have performed at venues from Birmingham Symphony Hall to Donau115 in Berlin.
12th Nov / No gig!
We’re having a week off!
19th November / basic surfaces + Ruth Webber (solo set)
basic surfaces is a brand new collaborative line up; new music from five musicians with strong links to the Sheffield music scene, and a renewal of long standing musical friendships, with Manon McCoy (harp/electronics), Hannah Brady (sax/clarinet), Jez Matthews (piano), Seth Bennett (bass), and Will Shaw (drums). With subtle yet wide open melodies, the music played by this new line-up will venture in new spontaneous directions, with a common thread of exploration, and delicate yet occasionally fierce interactions.
Following the launch of her debut EP ‘Songs for my Father’ in April 2024, Sheffield-based Ruth Webber takes her solo project in a new direction, extending her saxophone sound with pedals to create improvised soundscapes and dreamworlds, with nods to the great musicians who have inspired her. Ruth is one of the city’s most original new voices.
26th November / Happenstance
Contemporary jazz from a brilliant new European quartet featuring Zdeněk Tománek (tenor/soprano saxophone), Noé Sécula (piano), Tommy Fuller (bass), and Lluís Pérez-Villegas (drums). Freedom, risk taking and trust lie at the heart of their music, and a love for the music of Wayne Shorter and The Beatles; original music sits alongside distinctive takes on jazz standards, and a robust lyricism, contemplative melodies, driving grooves, with a compelling sense of the unexpected.
3rd Dec / Lucas Walters Trio
From Nottingham an exciting new voice in UK jazz and fusion, pianist Lucas Walters is influenced by the likes of McCoy Tyner, Ahmad Jamal, Stevie Wonder Robert Glasper, Ashley Henry and Yussef Dayes. Driving music blending rich jazz harmonies with upbeat tempos; cinematic with emotional depth, contemporary, yet rooted in tradition. A BBC Young Jazz Musician semi-finalist Lucas has worked with musicians including Tony Kofi, Gary Reader, and Benjamin Luhis, and his trio includes Jack Benjamin (bass) and Jamie Sykes (drums).
10th December Manon McCoy + John Pope + Will Shaw
A brand new collaboration of three inspiring improvising musicians creating new paths and sounds on the Northern scene, this gig follows a duo performance at Cobalt Studios in Newcastle by Manon McCoy (balo, Alice Brookes, Emergence) on harp/electronics, and John Pope (Archipelago) on bass, they’re joined by Will Shaw (balo, Life Aquatic Band, Emergence) on drums. String preparations and hand made objects, live electronics as extensions of acoustic instruments; engrossing and playful music from three energising presences.
17th Dec / Sloth Racket 10th Anniversary Tour
Sloth Racket are led by baritone saxophonist Cath Roberts (Quadraceratops, Favourite Animals), with Anton Hunter (Beats & Pieces Big Band, Article XI) on guitar, Sam Andreae (Trio Riot) on tenor sax, Seth Bennett (Metamorphic) on bass, Johnny Hunter (Nat Birchall, Revival Room) on drums. Fiery free jazz, sparse, minimal improv, deep grooves and big riffs, they formed in 2015 and have played across the UK including appearances at London and Lancaster Jazz Festivals. A powerful band with a strong Sheffield connection.
