Ronnie Scott’s is pleased to announce an incredible month of world class music which includes the breathtaking Hammond organ playing of Barbara Dennerlein, soul sensation Mica Paris performing tracks from her brand new album, legends Benny Golson and Buddy Greco, and the electrifying sounds of Erik Truffaz & Talvin Singh.

RONNIE SCOTT’S 50TH PRESENTS…KENNY GARRETT

Throughout his career, multiple Grammy-nominee Kenny Garrett has explored a vast spectrum of music.  His muscular yet melodic saxophone playing was first documented on 1984’s Introducing Kenny Garrett, and since has been featured on recordings by artists as definitive and diverse as jazz legends Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, rock loyalty Sting, Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen, and progressive rap pioneer Guru.  A very welcome return to the club for one of contemporary jazz’s greats. NEIL COWLEY TRIO

Known for a remarkable rapport with their audience, helped by Cowley’s often hilarious and always amusing chat, the trio’s captivating and exciting live shows led many shows on their tour attract full houses and standing ovations.  The group won the 2007 BBC Jazz Award for Best Album, and Cowley is considered one of the finest pianists of his generation as well as a modern ambassador for the music, broadening the boundaries of jazz to a include a wider, more popular-minded audience through his intelligent but accessible melodies and hooks.

BARBARA DENNERLEIN

Barbara Dennerlein has created an innovative and distinctive style that opened up totally new musical dimensions for the Hammond B3 organ, re-popularising the instrument through a string of forward thinking hard and post-bop recordings in the 1980s.  Above all, she is one of the very few organists who can fully utilize the bass pedals to a melodic and harmonic advantage, and is surely unequalled in her breathtaking technique. Barbara and her regular drummer Daniel Messina will be joined by UK musicians DAVE LEWIS on tenor and MARK RIDOUT on guitar.

MICA PARIS

British soul singer Mica Paris started off singing in church before turning professional in her mid-teens.  She has fronted a number of radio and television shows as well as a highly successful monthly residency at Ronnie’s.  For this return to the club, Mica will draw upon music from her forthcoming new album Born Again as well as tracks from her extensive back catalogue, which cemented her reputation as one of the finest soul vocalists to have emerged this side of the Atlantic.

Pianist, singer, showman and universally acknowledged legend of modern music, Ray Charles fused soul, country and pop through his Modern Sounds recordings, quickly rising through the ranks of popular music history to become one of the best loved entertainers of all time, in any genre - Frank Sinatra himself once called him “the only true genius in the business”.  This revue show will pay tribute to the great man, headed by our artistic director James Pearson, the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars and a very special guest, to be announced.

NATALIE WILLIAMS SOUL FAMILY
Hosted by the wonderfully charismatic and talented soul singer Natalie Williams and her band, Soul Family Sunday offers the chance to catch some of the best R&B, soul and jazz musicians in the UK up close and personal. While guests vary from month to month, there is always the opportunity to hear music of the highest quality where the stars of the British scene showcase their material in an exciting ad hoc setting.

BENNY GOLSON

A welcome return for this pioneer of the saxophone, Benny Golson is famed as an arranger and composer as much as he is for his stunning tenor playing, penning such standards as Along Came Betty, Stablemates, Killer Joe and I Remember Clifford, written as a tribute to the late Clifford Brown who played with Golson in Lionel Hampton’s Big Band.  Golson also played alongside Blakey, as well as Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Red Garland and Art Farmer, and has composed and arranged music for countless other musicians with his work also featuring in film and television since the ‘50s. Golson has brought his many years of experience and devotion to the art of jazz and is actively involved in keeping the spirit of the music alive in the younger generations, holding clinics and seminars across the world.

BUDDY GRECO

A showman from the golden age of classic entertainers, Buddy Greco’s swinging style is hardly matched on any stage today.  A truly talented jazz pianist as well as a honey voiced crooner, Greco has been singing the hits and gaining the admiration of audiences and peers for decades.  He has released over 60 albums and more than a hundred singles, including The Lady Is A Tramp, Around The World and Ooh Look A-Her, Ain’t She Pretty, performed on request for the Queen, tours relentlessly across the globe and still finds the time to regularly appear at his own club in California - Greco is one of that rare breed of artists who has a boundless energy and enthusiasm that shines in everything he does.

The club’s monthly blues night, hosted by guitarist Tony Remy and keyboardist Sam Grimley, sees a host of special guests turning up to perform at what is quickly becoming the most talked about blues night in town.

TERRY REID

After famously turning down the job as vocalist for Led Zeppelin, Terry went on to recommend both Robert Plant and John Bonham to Jimmy Page for their jobs, demonstrating excellent musical taste at an early stage.  Reid was a professional rock n’ roller with Peter Jay & the Jaywalkers at age 15, later pursuing his solo career and touring the UK, US and Europe extensively in the company of bands such as Cream and The Rolling Stones.  Rebuffing advances not only from Zeppelin but also Deep Purple before the age of 20, he has been hailed by The Independent as ?the most soulful British vocalist ever’ - who are we to disagree?

YolanDa Brown is someone who has made the saxophone truly her own, a very gifted saxophonist fluent in a whole lot more than just that one genre.  The 26 year old MOBO Best Jazz winner (2008) has already collaborated with the likes of other Ronnie’s regulars such as Soweto Kinch and Mica Paris.  Described as ?an accessible mix of jazz tones with a twist of R&B and funk? by Time Out magazine, this is an excellent one-night-only opportunity to catch this rising star of the future.

LINDA LEWIS

?The first time I played Ronnie Scotts it was back in the seventies. I was one of the first non jazz singers to play there, so I was scared!  I could hear Ella and Sarah, Annie Ross and Blossom Dearie in the walls.?  Acclaimed British vocalist Linda Lewis might have been intimidated on her first appearance at the club, but as a hugely experienced and respected artist, she now returns to the club as a deservedly confident star in her own right, possessed of an amazing five octave range and revered for the diversity of her repertoire.

Ronnie Scott’s has always had upheld a fine tradition of having its own exceptional musicians in house, as well as attracting the greatest players from around the world.  The most recent incarnation of the Ronnie’s Big Band, the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, serves to represent what the club as a whole stands for ? incredible music performed by incredible musicians, all held together by the musical direction of Pete Long.

ERIK TRUFFAZ AND TALVIN SINGH

Erik Truffaz has a long and distinguished career as one of contemporary jazz’s most eclectic and innovative trumpeters, combining elements of a number of different musical styles into his sound, with a string of best-selling albums, from 1994’s Nina Valeria through to 2008’s Rendez-Vous.  His performance with Talvin Singh promises to be one of the most electrifying collaborations the club has seen for some time, with the tabla virtuoso and producer extraordinaire bringing his own varied range of influences to the overall sound.  Not one to miss?

STANLEY JORDAN

After a long hiatus, we are extremely proud to welcome back guitar innovator par excellence Stanley Jordan.  Jordan found fame after his extraordinary two-handed tapping technique captivated audiences world-wide, perhaps most famously on 1984’s Magic Touch album.  Capable of crafting chords, basslines, melodies and harmonies simultaneously on one instrument, he will be at the club with his US band, performing music from his latest release, State of Nature.
