US vocalist Sachal Vasandani and French / New York based pianist Romain Collin have signed with Edition Records for the release of their album ‘Midnight Shelter’ due on 19th March 2021.

We have received the following press release;

Sachal Vasandani & Romain Collin sign to Edition Records.

US vocalist Sachal Vasandani and French / New York based pianist Romain Collin join with Edition Records for the release of ‘Midnight Shelter’, a beautifully intimate, raw and emotive album recorded in 2020.

It’s with great excitement and pride that we can announce that Sachal Vasandani and Romain Collin will join Edition’s roster for the release of ‘Midnight Shelter’.

This collaboration marks an important time for the label as one of a recent wave of new signings with especially, more recently, a focus on vocal artists, including Kurt Elling and Gretchen Parlato. It also speaks of the continual development and increasing breadth of Edition’s roster, expanding the boundaries of creative Jazz whether influenced by classical, electronic or singer-songwriter modes.

This music is powerfully intimate and deeply authentic, providing the label with a mission. As Edition boss Dave Stapleton says: ‘We’re here to enhance the experience, support the music and allow Artists to make their best, and most creative art’. With a beautifully compelling and warm sound, ‘Midnight Shelter’ intimately reworks well-known music by Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Lennon/McCartney and other outstanding songwriters, alongside spellbinding sensitive originals, uniquely expressed. It’s a true classic in the making.

Midnight Shelter will be released on 19th March 2021

Sachal says on the signing: “After a few months of near-total isolation, I met up with my friend and neighbor Romain Collin in the park near my house.  After sharing our stories, we agreed we should play - just get together and play.  We didn’t set out to make a record, but getting together in the studio gave me a chance to work through the anxiety and anger I kept inside throughout the spring and summer.”

Romain says: “In this time of isolation, being able to spontaneously create music with Sachal was so refreshing. He’s such a versatile musician, and putting together a repertoire of songs that we could re-Imagine in an intimate way in the studio felt special to us. I hope this music keeps people in good company.”

Dave Stapleton continues: “2020 has been one of the greatest challenges we have all faced in recent memory. For musicians, the removal of live performance possibilities has left a void in their purpose and being.

In July I was sent this album by two different people and on first listen it spoke to me in buckets - the pain of the continuing issues, the beauty and the power of music, of healing, of collaboration. The music is complete, it requires attention but it simultaneously draws you in. It is undeniably warm, intimate and honest. The combination of Sachal’s heartfelt expressive vocals and the pianism and sensitivity of Romain’s playing is a perfect union. It was something I immediately jumped at and felt privileged to work with. It serves as a reminder of the anguish that 2020 represents for many, but offers a positive vista and the promise and opportunity of a brighter future”.
