The Green Note has forwarded its latest newsletter with details of forthcoming musical events, plus an appeal for financial support to help the venue keep going during these difficult times.
A little ask from us + September Highlights
Hello Green Note Friends,
September is here, and we’ve got a really lovely month of live music ahead, including many of our favourite regulars - from bluegrass, Americana and old-time music to intimate songwriting, contemporary folk and music from further afield. But before we tell you about some of the shows we’re particularly excited about, we wanted to share a little bit about how things have been here at Green Note.
A little ask from us ❤️
It feels a bit strange writing this, but we wanted to be honest with you about where things are at. It’s been a really tough summer at Green Note. The heatwave, the World Cup and a general quietness meant fewer people were coming out to gigs, and we ended up having to cancel quite a few shows because ticket sales just weren’t there. We’re hoping things will soon start to pick up again, but the last few months have put a real strain on us and, at the moment, we’re struggling with cash flow and have some bills and overheads that we’re finding difficult to keep up with.
We know everyone has their own challenges at the moment, so please don’t feel under any pressure at all. But if Green Note means something to you, and you’re in a position to lend us a little helping hand, a donation of any size would genuinely make a difference and help us through this difficult patch.
We’ve somehow made it to 21 years of Green Note, and that’s entirely down to the amazing community of musicians, music lovers, staff, friends and supporters who have kept showing up and believing in what we do. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built together, and we really want to keep this little place going for many more years.

We’re super excited for a Green Note debut this Friday from Virginia’s MIKE MITCHELL BAND (Fri 4th Sept). Featuring masterful fiddle work, strong harmonies, and rising young pickers, their dynamic performances blend tradition, family, and original songwriting into a compelling, modern bluegrass sound.
Next week we’re excited to be bringing Scottish-Americana songstress KIRSTEN ADAMSON (Thu 10th Sept) to The Water Rats, with her remarkable voice that draws on the great traditions of folk, country and Americana. And having sold out our smaller Basement Bar last time they played, Bristol’s JOE MANSFIELD & THE TEMPERANCE TWO (Fri 18th Sept) will be playing our main stage, bringing driving, fiddle-led folk music from the mountains of America - perfect for anyone who likes their roots music lively and full of energy.
For beautifully crafted songs and compelling storytelling, there’s plenty to look forward to this month, starting with a stunning double-bill this Sunday with KENAN FLANNERY & THE BANDIT QUEEN OF SORROWS (Sun 6th Sept) - this will be an afternoon of dark folk and raw storytelling… With a voice that hits with the intensity of a hundred Irish poets and a sound rooted in the raw authenticity of the folk tradition, Kenan weaves the storytelling legacy of The Dubliners with the grit of Townes Van Zandt and John Prine, while poet, multi-instrumentalist, and veteran of the rails, the Bandit Queen crafts a soundscape of dark folk, blues, and 1920s jazz. A perfect way to spend an afternoon!
JAMES FELICE and WILLIAM LAWRENCE (Thu 10th Sept), two members of celebrated New York band, The Felice Brothers are heading our way next week to perform music from their respective solo works. It will be a dreamy and quiet evening of American music and storytelling from some of the best in the business. We’re also looking forward to the welcome return of JESS KLEIN (Sat 12th Sept) who brings her distinctive and intimate voice to the stage, while Scottish-Americana troubadour DEAN OWENS (Mon 14th Sept) delivers songs of emotional depth and dark majesty. And JENNY STURGEON & MG BOULTER (Wed 16th Sept) bring together two acclaimed songwriters for an evening of thoughtful, beautifully crafted songs. All highly recommended!
September also also takes us into some fascinating musical territory. JOSH MIDDLETON & RASIKA AJOTIKAR (Tue 8th Sept) explore the surprising connections between Celtic and Bulgarian folk music, with voice and accordion in conversation. MAZAIKA DUO (Fri 11th Sept) bring a wonderfully eclectic and uplifting mix of Russian and Gypsy folk, tango, klezmer, gypsy jazz and Balkan beat. It’s a great snapshot of the breadth of music we love to put on at Green Note - music rooted in tradition, but always finding new ways to surprise and delight!
