There’s still plenty to look forward to at Green Note this September, with a wonderfully varied run of live music taking us through folk, jazz, blues, roots and more. Here are some of our highlights for the rest of the month.
We’re looking forward to welcoming back JOE MANSFIELD & THE TEMPERANCE TWO (Fri 18th Sept) who bring driving, fiddle-led folk from the mountains of America to our stage, while SAM BROOKES (Wed 23rd Sept) heads to The Water Rats next week with his full band, bringing his richly emotional songwriting to the stage. Highly recommended!! Canada’s PETUNIA (Sun 27th Sept) offers something altogether more eccentric, with a wild blend of hillbilly, country and roots influences. Described as “Hank Williams on acid, if David Lynch and Nick Cave had a hillbilly baby that yodelled, or Tom Waits meets Elvis Presley at Woody Guthrie’s hobo junction”... he hasn’t graced these shores for about 10 years so we’re excited to welcome him back!
For lovers of jazz and timeless song, the brilliant HONEY’S THREE (Sun 20th Sept) are back this Sunday - the swing and joy of the trio is contagious - you’ll not be able to keep your feet from tapping! This is followed by a Green Note debut from BECKY ALICE who PRESENTS THE MUSIC OF ELLA FITZGERALD (Tue 22nd Sept), featuring well-known Ella classics alongside lesser-known gems from her extensive catalogue. A chance to hear familiar songs reimagined in an intimate setting.
KIHAYA BLUES (Fri 25th Sept) are back this month bringing together Soul, Blues, Jazz, Latin and Hip Hop, drawing on musical roots across Africa, Cape Verde, Madagascar and the Caribbean. In a late addition to the calendar, stunning folky songstress NY OH (Sat 26th Sept) plays a special matinée, followed by old-time trio THE RIGMAROLLERS (Sat 26th Sept) with vintage American sounds, Sousaphone grooves, intricate string picking, harmonica and washboard. Closing out the month, MAKINDU (Wed 30th Sept) draw on folk, devotional music and improvisation to create evolving soundscapes shaped by shared memory and spontaneous discovery.
